While all of the previous princesses Disney created were based on public domain stories, Pocahontas aimed to create the first Disney princess out of a historical figure. Although Pocahontas was a real person, the version we know by Disney is really only loosely based on the original person mostly using the names, ethnicity and geographic location from her tale; Disney took these elements of Pocahontas’s life and combined it with their storytelling techniques to bring us the seventh Disney Princess!

Pocahontas is my favorite and even though her real life was different I still enjoyed how Disney portrayed her. I love how she is a free spirit and stands up for what is right even if she has to stand alone.

I absolutely love Pocahontas, both her movie and her as a character. I appreciate what Disney tried to do with her, and I know that they weren't trying to say that their story is the true story. They just wanted to do their own thing with it. I hate that Pocahontas doesn't get as much attention as the other princesses, because she's one of the more proactive princesses. She doesn't take crap from anyone, cares deeply for her people and nature, and is a very strong woman. She's also a princess that's special to me because her song Colors of the Wind is a song my grandmother sang to me before she died. All of your videos were great, and I love how much info you provided about each princess. I can't really pick a favorite, since I liked them all. I can't wait until next year so I can see you do a video on Rapunzel. She's my favorite. :)

As you said I do not believe that Disney was telling the story of her life but putting their on spin on things, as Disney always does! :) Love it!

Her real name was Matoaka. She was kidnapped as a child. She was 12 and forced to marry John Smith who was a grown man. She was raped, abused, paraded around Europe for amusement and ultimately died very young. Disney doesn't get to put their "own spin" on that. This video does not address the truth and people supporting Disney's version are supporting colonialism and the lies it perpetuates. Indigenous people should tell indigenous stories. This is so gross. It's racist. It's a lie and that's not okay.

I see Disney's Pocahontas as a romanticized historical fiction, meant to give us a wonderful character that people who are Native American could relate to. I don't think she's a bad character nor feel the movie is awful. There's so many romanticized and inaccurate historical films and even tv series and cartoons, but I feel because this is a Disney film and because it's focused on an ethnic group with darker skin, people just want to ram the hate to it. I mean look at Balto, that was a romanticized film about an actual tragic event! They even made it look like none of the people that got the illness died but in fact it did kill people, before the medicine arrived and made Balto look like the sole hero. Yet, no one complains heavy about that film as they do with Pocahontas. Disney's Pocahontas as a character is a wonderful, strong, independent young woman, who is wise beyond her years and I feel like portraying her in that way is better than portraying her as something negative. I looked up to Pocahontas as a kid and still do today because I have a little bit of Native American in me. My mom loved the film too and both of us are really close to that side. Even upon learning the true tale, I still love this movie and see it as how other historical fictions are. They're just films loosely based on real events to tell a "what if" tale. I think if people could just see it as that and the character as what I just described than maybe people would enjoy the film or at least, the portrayal of her. Also, if you don't like the movie that's perfectly fine. Just don't shame on me or others who may disagree. Hating/shaming on people won't change anything. It just makes people bitter and there's enough of that in the world.

Anastasia is another one where they completely gloss over true historical events, with a happily ever after tale. Anastasia, nor any of her family definitely did not get a happily ever after in real life. Aside from finally being given a proper burial many decades later.

Her real name was Matoaka. She was a child about 12 when she met John Smith who was a grown man. He kidnapped her, raped her and paraded her around Europe as an object to be gawked at. She died from an infection at about 21 because she had no immunity to European disease. It's not a romanticized version. It's a racist, stereotyped lie. It's disgusting that people think indigenous people could relate to this movie. What a joke. This is how Europeans like to retell history by making themselves the hero to save minority populations. The movie is disgusting and racist and indoctrinates children to hold those same perspectives. Indigenous people should tell indigenous stories to end the cycle. Matoaka was the first of many missing and murdered indigenous women. I'm glad you find that entertaining.

The Ariel video was my favorite. Not only is she my favorite princess, but you go into detail on why many she means a lot to many people that have a connection with her, myself included. Not to mention I really love her story.

I was born in 99 and saw Pocahontas on VHS lol. I was unaware of the classic media stereotype of native Americans being “noble savages.” Pocahontas was my first movie about Native American people. So to me, Pocahontas was totally her own person and not just another botched indigenous character. As an adult I definitely see how the movie follows the pattern of so many others like it (and I understand the strong divergence from historical fact). But that doesn’t change how I first saw it as a child. It’s still one of my favorites. I choose to enjoy it as complete work of fiction with an individual character who goes after what she wants despite strong consequences.

You should have a second Disney Princess Week, where you do the last 7 princesses (Mulan, Tiana, Rapunzel, Anna & Elsa, Merida, and Moana). But if you put Anna and Elsa in the same video, and count them as one princess, you should do Megara from Hercules as the first one for that week. Who agrees with me?

I watched Brother Bear the other day noticed something pretty strange, Kenai's parents are never there! At the manhood ceremony, no parents. At Sidka's funeral you only see his brothers! What happened to their parents? They aren't even mentioned.

I am sick of tired of all these dead mothers and parents but ironically, Brave is my least favorite Disney Princess movie. But I still enjoy all of them. And props to the informative vid about the real story. Even that Disney version was inspired it's enjoyable.

That is the thing with sequels, they think that everybody loves them when actually everybody hates them like Pocahontas 2 for example, Pocahontas may have end up woth her real life husband John Rolfe and guess what, Disney fans still doesn’t want it! You know why? Because John Smith love with Pocahontas is what made the movie one of the BEST movies of all time!!!!
