POCAHONTAS MOVIE REACTION! Today I'll be watching a film I have never seen before Pocahontas released in 1995 for the first time. Here's my Pocahontas reaction. Want to watch the ENTIRE Movie with me? Check out: / timotheereacts
This is the Disney animated tale of the romance between a young American Indian woman named Pocahontas (Seong Yujin) and Capt. John Smith (Lee Jeong-gu), who journeyed to the New World with other settlers to begin fresh lives. Her powerful father, Chief Powhatan, disapproves of their relationship and wants her to marry a native warrior. Meanwhile, Smith's fellow Englishmen hope to rob the Native Americans of their gold. Can Pocahontas' love for Smith save the day?

to be honest, i was about to say "hopefully, you dont get intentions to watch the unpopular followup" since John Smith is the authentic and official disney prince than the other way around of just faithfully putting story elements from the real history, too bad that you just mentioned that you are willing to put pocahontas 2 on the list, despite that it has its own animation, voice acting, and most likely funny merits, hopefully you do consider that as an alternate storyline from pocahontas continuation

John Smith is underrated and over hated Disney prince because he has so much character development. He starts out as just one of the colonizers trying to take their land but he soon learns to see the natives as people. John learns to see nature as something to protect and not exploit.

This was my paternal grandmother's favorite movie from Disney. She was half Kiowa while she was a lover of animation, she tolerated seeing Native American being protrayed in a dumb light so she was nervous seeing this movie when it came out because she knew the true story of Pocahontas. She cried tears of joy when she finally saw animated characters that looked just like her. I wish I could have asked her more about our culture but I was young and didnt understand how important it was at the time.

This film is classic 90s Disney at its peak. This was when they had the balls to make a movie with heavy themes like this, the song Savages especially describes racism, discrimination and the misunderstanding on both sides. Alan Menken went beautifully hard on the score especially the ending, he won another two Oscars for this. Best Score and Best Original Song for Colors of the Wind, I remember loving the Vanessa Williams version a lot. There is a deleted song called If I Never Knew You which was Pocahontas and John Smith's love duet. It can be seen on youtube and it really shouldn't have been cut as it perfectly described their relationship and the strength of their love amidst the odds. Also Pocahontas is incredibly beautiful especially with the way her hair was animated, plus her independence and bravery should be commended.

I actually love this movie, especially the ending because I see it as a good message for people to do what's best for everyone else. I know that the voyage is months long, but putting logic a side, John Smith had to leave and as much as Pocahontas wanted to go, she knew that she was needed where she is. So while it's one of the few Disney movies that has a bittersweet ending, it's one that I really appreciate.

The voices of Irene Bedard and Mel Gibson as the lead roles were impressive! Interesting to note: The deleted song “If I Never Knew You” is something I think should’ve remained in the final cut because it reflects on the love Pocahontas and John have for each other. Though it was fully recorded and animated, it was removed due to test audiences (namely young children) growing bored of it despite adults loving it.

So underestimated this Disney classic ! Nowadays, in Disney movies like Raya or Avalonia, we never see dark aspects of violence like in this movie. Songs are perfect and I enjoy characters and the story. "Savages" is without doubt the better song of the movie for me. A real way to show the racism and a war between men going to their death. It's so shocking and hard to see, but it permits to deliver a effective message against discrimination, a few better than in Zootopia.

Late to the party but let me just add: since this movie is very, VERY, loosely based on history, I always appreciated that the animators all the same had a mind of attention for little details. Such as John Smith being a "man of amazing stories" as by this time he was already a renowned adventurer and veteran of many wars in Europe. Most notably the saber you see on his back at the beginning-- he got that from a Transylvanian noble he saved the life of. The design of the galleon they went on, while it would've had her sister ships for support, is also very spot-on. Jamestown was actually a real colony, one that disappeared mysteriously after a short flourish and nobody quite knows why. Little details like that can make or break historical fiction imo. Also it's a good thing they didn't draw the canons in for the final showdown - despite them being there in the song - or it would've been rather one-sided.

In reality, her real name was Motoaka and her name after she was forced to move to England and convert to Puritanism was Rebecca Rolfe, Pocahontas was the name John Smith gave her in his tall tales he loved to tell his fellow Jamestown settlers(It was also her mother`s name which her father affectionately nicknamed his daughter as she reminded him of his late wife), he was a notorious pathological liar, slave driver and narcissist disliked by the Powhatans and his fellow Englishmen alike. Also, the love story never happened and would have been weird IRL because she was 10-12 at the time and he was 25-28.

Back on my voice connections thing: previous comments have already pointed out Ratcliffe and Cogsworth are voiced by the same person, he also voices Wiggins the servant in this. Grandmother Willow is the voice of the Narrator/Gaea in the first God of War games (another character made at least partly from trees). And finally, Pocahontas is the second Disney character after Jasmine to have her singing voice provided by a former cast member of Les Miserables, specifically the 1995 10th anniversary concert. Her singing voice is Judi Kuhn who played the adult Cosette, while Lea Salonga (singing voice of Jasmine and Mulan) played the adult Eponine. Oh, and Thomas is Batman.

The story is based on or at least heavy inspired by historical events as Pocahontas was a real person, as well is her father Powhatan, John Smith and Governor Ratcliff. Historians to this day still debate on werever John Smith's diaries of him ever meeting Pocahontas (whose real official name was Amounte, privately it was Matoaka, Pocahontas is a nickname meaning "playful one" or "little mischief") and that she saved him from being executed by her own people (possibly from her father hence the climax of the movie) were real or fake. Smith was shot and injured, having to return to England for proper treatment. Pocahontas did go to England (this event is what the sequel is based on) but she stayed there but didn't marry John Smith but another man named John Rolfe, whom she got a daughter with. She never returned to America but died in England, her daughter on other hand would go overthere and meet her grandfather. Jamestown, the first english settlement in North America still exist today as a historical site.

One of my favorite Disney movies. Me and my cousin watched it all the time whenever I visited him back then. What makes this movie even more sadder,is the fact that it was based on real events. Yes,Pocahontas' story is real, and not so charming. Very messed up. I'm not going on details because.. Reasons.

Although this is one of the controversial classics, Renaissance Whether you like it or not I guess we all admit that the music in this is an actual Banger. "Colors of the wind" It is one of my favorite Disney songs, it has a very nice message.

You don't see the racism when you're a kid but now you hear the villain's song and hear the racist slurs. "They're not like you and me which means they must be evil" and "They're different from us which means they can't be trusted"

In France, the line is " They're not white so they're obviously bad ". And now, when I watch the movie, I can tell that Kocoum is responsible of his own death.

Yes -- the racist slurs are placed in the mouth of a loathsome villain to show you how loathsome he is. That is not an endorsement of those views by the filmmakers, it is the exact opposite.

I feel like it wouldn't be as controversial if the main characters werent of historical reference. Or if they said based loosely on people of the same name

Recommend the 2nd Pocahontas!🙏 Definition of underrated Disney tried to make it more historically accurate. It’s not completely accurate of course lol but it follows how she had traveled to England and about an… important person she met. It follows the 2000s Disney sequel curse, due to the budget cut in animation, but it really doesn’t deter you from enjoying it. It is no “Cinderella III” but it it is one of the better Disney sequels. (And it actually has some banger songs 🎵) ⭐️Also recommend the live action one from 2006. Its called “The New World”. It stars Christian Bale & Colin Farrell. Also pretty underrated.

Grandmother willow is metaphorically supposedly Mother Earth as a conceptual metaphor for Mother Earth a spirit of many spirits that were born trough Mother Earth like in the natives' cultures believe they don't pray to a God like we do in Church; they say father of the world and also father sun at times too and along with Mother Earth who created us all. So, I always had a theory that Grandmother willow was just playing a big part of Mother Earth.

While I love the music and the animation, also I applaud the people who worked hard on this film, I find it a bit difficult to get past Disney making this a romance between John smith and pocahontas. I mean I get that was the point of every Disney movie back then.. but if your going to do it make it about fictional characters that didn't actually exist, because all I can think of is the fact John was 70 and pocahontas was 11 when they met and ugh no.

Pocahontas is indeed one of those underappreciated gems with mixed reception along with El Dorado, Super Mario, and Capture the Flag, hopefully you get the chance to put the last one eventually on your list, you have to trust me because it has prominent spanish animator, but i think you shall be intrigued to also putting other options like a couple of danish animated films that are HELP IM A FISH and ASTERIX & THE VIKINGS

I love this movie, it might not be historically accurate but it’s so beautiful and has a very strong message about racism and how all sides are capable of it. Definitely a message people need more of today. It’s also one of the most beautiful 2D movies, Pocahontas hair especially is amazing animation. But I can understand people not liking this movie for the inaccuracies since it is based on history and not a fairy tale but ultimately it is a Disney movie and not a documentary, and at least for me movies like this inspire me to look up the real history of what happened while still enjoying the fictional version. Great reaction though, I too am disappointed by the ending only being bittersweet even if it was a powerful ending. The second movie is pretty funny but definitely lacks the magic of this one.

As divisive as Disney’s Pocahontas was back when this released in 1995, I say it’s not meant to be historically accurate at all. Like The Greatest Showman in 2017, it’s mainly about the musical numbers with a story worth telling rather than tying itself too closely to historical facts.
