20 years ago my father passed away. I got a lot of stuff as a result of moving our mom to a different house...I got dads tackle box which sat on a shelf for 15 years. Digging through it about 5 years ago I found this exact same Boy Scout knife. I cleaned it and sharpened all the blades and gave it to my brother.

Great Video! I am getting ready to give my son my old boy scout pocket knife which has been sitting in drawer for probably 30 years now.( I had kids late). I have the one right after this. It has a white casing. Probably from 82-83. It even has a cattywampus lanyard ring on it. It is in slightly better condition than this one but slightly grungier. This video will help tremendously since I am going to try to do it all by hand.

That’s awesome! Always wanted to be a Scout when I was younger but my parents wouldn’t let me. Back then we did have Royal Rangers affiliation with Churches so we did get some camp skills. We lived to far out in the country for Scouts though. I’d like to think I made up for it by becoming an 82nd Airborne Paratrooper but it would have been cool to be both. I wish more young guys had the metal of the older Traditions of Scouts.

Great job and excellent tips. When I clean up an old knife like this, I like to place the blades at a 90 degree angle, one at a time, and clean up the part of the spring that is showing. I find that this helps the snap and doesn’t break the spring.
@357magdad
@357magdad 4 года назад
I did that with the wire brush. I just did'n film it. I like to flush a bunch of WD-40 through the pivots to work out the rust between the springs and liners.

Hi Magdad, if Scout doesn’t have that pocket knife he may try to “acquire” from you. Who am I kidding, what doesn’t he have. 😂 Really nice job. I can see why cleaning the knife by hand is so relaxing, just listening to music while your lost in your work is a very good form of mindfulness. I learned to sharpen on a tri phone like yours, I still have the stones. The adhesive failed years ago, I have worn halfway through the course stone, the medium stone has been stained black with swarf, and the fine stone has been cracked and repaired. Other than adding a black Arkansas stone for that extra fine edge I still use the same stones in the same order a wonderful set.

That knife looks like a better quality version of my British Richards scout knife, which my parents gave me when I was ten. It's in my pocket as I write. Recently, it ended up lost in a garden, and turned up a few days ago in the grass, severely rusted because none of it is stainless steel. I've got the blades moving again, but it needs similar treatment to yours now. Need to find a Dremel...

That was just an amazing restoration. Except for the minimal use of the Dremel everything was done so primitively. I had a very similar knife when I was a Cub Scout back in the 1950s only mine had blue scales if I remember correctly. I used to hook it on my uniform when we had meetings, I don’t think that would be allowed today. I’d probably wind up in jail!! Again great job! 👍

Thanks Frank! I have a small collection of novelty pocket knives from the 1950's that were marketed to young boys. Times have changed....

Boy Scouts are allowed to bring knives to meetings if they've received their Totin' Chip. Don't know about Cubs.

That looks very similar to the knife I was talking about on another video you did. The scales are different color but the blade shape is the same and the other tools are the same.

You should graduate to a LS Lansky sharpening kit for sharpening knives. Not great, but is great for over 98% of pocket knives and razor sharpness quickly. No scratches on the blade of used correctly and you can polish the edge with the 1200 grit stone.

Thanks for watching! I have a Lansky kit. I don't like the way it fits on the smaller pocket knife blades.

@@357magdad There's definitely limitations to the vice that's in the kit, but it's great on over 95% of the time to sharpen and to keep the blade free of scratches, it's pretty awesome. Thanks for the comeback!
