In this video, I explore the Pocket Miku - a unique vocal synthesizer from Japan.
The sample libraries I made in this video can be found here: www.patreon.com/posts/7302517...
NOTE: The sample library above is not a port of the Pocket Miku. For copyright reasons, I'm not able to include the raw Pocket Miku sounds in this download, so this contains only the highly processed Microcosm sounds.
You can buy one of these silly instruments on eBay here: www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from...

I always thought it was a little underwhelming. This is def a step in the right direction as far as a playable Miku voice. Obviously it'll always be better to hand input the midi notes yourself, but this is an exciting option for vocal synths!

The reason having a real time piano input for speech synthesis doesn’t work suuuper well is because we typically sing the consonant just before the note, and leave the vowel to take up all the space. In the actual vocaloid program (and similar synths like openUTAU, CeVIO, and my personal fav SynthV) the consonant is inserted right before the midi note you fill in, but for that to happen in real time the piano would need to somehow predict your touch before you press the key. It’s still a really cool device though! Just might be hard to play since you need to be sliiightly off time.

Miku is no longer a Vocaloid actually, Yamaha has basically abandoned the software and now Crypton has their own software to host the latest (controversial) version of Miku, Miku NT. Most people still prefer to use Vocaloid 4 over 5 because it's more geared towards tuning the voices manually and giving the user more control CORRECTION: Vocaloid 6 released so it is not abandoned but more accurately Crypton has abandoned Vocaloid

Vocaloid is a huge (and I mean HUGE) subset of music in japan and an insane amount of famous japanese producers come from a vocaloid background. Still to this day the scene has some really big breakout hits that get covers from this other, unrelated virtual idol sphere that is Vtubers... And then the producers create original songs for said vtubers! The vtuber music sphere is another place that's worth a look into since they operate so differently than what the west is used to.

it's vocaloid. Nobody ever heard of the synths version of it cause people that actually do make music in the genre use the software version like Vocaloid 5. It used to be even more janky. People had to actually use a game to develop music during the early days of vocaloid. Vocaloid is not exactly a music genre you consume live. Hence negating the need for synths in the first place. Miku being the OG of course, but my fav vocaloid artist is Cepheid.

Just a bit of a guess as to how the controls on this gizmo work, when it comes to the language side of things. Japanese vowels are the "A, I, U ,E, O" sounds that we know in English, but consonants, are actually a vowel with another sound placed in front of it. So for example, you put a "K" and front and you now have "KA, KI, KU, KE, KO". Put an "M" and you now have "MA, MI, MU, ME, MO". The "shift" button is probably swapping between these sets.

Consonants aren't vowels with another sound placed in front of them. Consonants are that "another sound". In ka, 'k' is a consonant, 'a' is a vowel, and the unit they form together is called a mora.

My girl Miku! Super excited to see you get into Vocaloid, there's so much cool music out there. The one thing I would say is that Vocaloid isn't so unique anymore! Vocal synth technology has really taken off the last few years, and there's all sorts of other software engines with lots and lots of voices! If you want to check out some free ones, there's UTAU (freeware, a gajillion voices) and Alter/Ego (by Plogue, two free voices), and for commercial stuff, there's CeVIO, Synthesizer V, Crypton's Piapro singer line... and that's just what I can think of off the top of my head!

Actually this synth instrument is based off an old synth from the late 60's called the Stylophone. A Stylophone is uniquely different from a Traditional synth like the Yamaha DX-7. It relies on the electroconductive keypad and a styles as the input for each keynote. While the DX-7 relies on a traditional piano keyboard and each key will toggle a switch to trigger the keynote input.
@duncathan_salt

while the physical instrument is definitely based on a stylophone, the synthesizer software itself is certainly based on vocaloid
@adamedmour9704
@adamedmour9704 Год назад
@@duncathan_saltThat said it’s extremely frustrating to watch him tap each note individually, and then pick up the pen, and then tap the next note, like a terrible keyboard. Stylophones have a unique glissando based playing style based on dragging the pen across the keyboard, which is evocative of a human voice even in its original primitive analogue form. Moreover, a traditional stylophone features an analogue master tuning knob on the back, which means you can easily tune to the key of the song and retain the “white key” glissando play style in any key. Based on this review video I have no idea how well this product works as an implementation of vocaloid on a stand alone stylophone based controller. For instance, this issue with certain vowels being out of time: what happens to the vowels when you glissando by dragging the pen from one key to the next is absolutely the main thing about this product, and it’s almost miraculously not featured in this video.

Это прекрасно... Я очень скучаю по такому звучанию Мику, сейчас это уже что-то олдскульные. Звучит эфемерно, переносит на 12 лет назад

Dude it's so ominous for some reason with the pedal and I love it I used to listen to a lot of Vocaloid but this is so good!

It’s so expensive but it’s cheaper than buying the Vocaloid software and Miku’s voicebank

Such a cool gadget. Like a 21st century stylophone (same stylus/metal keystrip but sounded awful even back in 1971). Very neat, looking forward to exploring the sample pack, thank you.

Dude, I want you to know what this specific video of yours just meant to me. Listening to you talking about sound across all this details and with such passion filled me with awe toward the sheer potential of the number of brilliant minds in the world, connected to different topics, and what they could achieve together. You increased my hope in humanity, really. And I needed that. A thousand thanks.

Once upon a time, I made a "web app" to easily translate the japanese syllables to usable hex codes and then a Max/MSP plugin for Ableton to plug those into so I could sequence notes and syllables in real time in the DAW - still have it around somewhere I'm sure

If you were able to read the manual you would have come across the draconian license agreement. It expressly forbids the use of the sound in any commercial recording.

I got one so I don't care if the price skyrockets after this video! XD On a side note, this tiny synth has the same chip as the Vocaloid Keyboard, and apparently has some hidden features accessible with sysex. O yeah I also have a habit of running Pocket Miku through NTS-1's cathedral reverb :D sounds quite similar to your microcosm setup.
