More like "Honor? I have a family to go back to. It'd be dishonorable to not do what I have to to make it back to them just for some sense of sportsmanship in a life or death situation."
I promise people have been throwing dirt in each other's eyes way before they were fencing. Not only is there historical precedent but it's also one of the oldest and most used tactics ever.

rich people fought that way too. when your lifes on the line and your instinct for survival kicks in, it doesnt matter how much money you have or what title of nobility you hold. youre fighting to live and youll do anything you can to ensure that outcome.
Generally, rich people of that period settled things through formal duels. Not street fights. Things that were more expected to have rules. As such, many of the medieval fencing manuals we use today for HEMA were made by and for rich people. Later ones were more of the people. This is interestingly apparent when Fiore covers how to defend when the rabble throws their sword at you. Later, when more people carried swords as civilians, Hundt covers times where it makes sense to throw your sword.
@@MarcusVance im not denying duels with rules existed, there were plenty. I should of mentioned that i was thinking of a battlefield situation more than a duel
I remember thumbing through this maybe barely 50 page picture book on the US Military and allies, it was definitely post desert storm cause they covered shock and awe, and combined arms. It was like volume number whatever in a series. They covered western small arms and field survival examples for different kinds of campfires, etc. So there's a part about fighting an opponent armed with a knife and one of the things recommended is grabbing whatever debris you can find to throw in your opponents face and the example they used was pocket change. I just thought it was hilarious but it made sense, but nowadays I don't think anyone has pocket change
I like the idea of trashy low class gang rivalrys and stuff but instead of using shootas and blickys in drivebys and stuff they instead use medieval armor and weapons, but with all the underhanded tactics like this. Turf wars decided by duels lolol
I mean if you go outside of America there are plenty of gangs that use bats, metal pipes, and knives. Gun laws varying makes melee combat a lot more commonplace like in Japan for instance.
Any means necessary to survive should always be the way to go .. pocket sand , pretending your hurt or surrender etc for sure do whatever it takes to survive 😊
That's not out of the realm of possibility. I once read that they threw grass into opponents faces as a distraction. Even better, it was at night and in the dark, so the target felt something touch their face, but didn't know what it was.
