For thousands of years, the Spartans have captured the imaginations of Westerners. In ancient Greece, the city-state was admired for its military prowess, civic unity, and dedication to leisurely athletic pursuits. Today, we make movies about Spartans and name sports teams after them. When we moderns think of Spartans, we typically think of them simply as fierce warriors.
But while the Spartans were indeed warriors par excellence, their culture was much more complex. Today on the show, I unpack some of these complexities with historian Paul Rahe. Paul is working on a series of books with Yale University Press which explore both the military and political strategy of the Spartans. We begin our conversation discussing why it’s hard for us moderns to truly understand Sparta. We then dig into the history and culture of Spartans, including where they came from, their economic set-up and relationship with the helot population, and the strenuous upbringing of boys that made them fit for battle. We then talk about the mixed government of the Spartans. We end our conversation discussing how the city-state faded into obscurity, and why the Spartans yet live on in modern culture.

I'm a great admirer of the Spartan civilization/culture. They were, to me, even by today's standards, the epitome of masculinity. I really enjoyed this podcast. Thanks!

Is that Brett's voice? I just listened to a podcast episode on the website and had to come in here and double-check. Last time I heard him speak was in a video from 6 years ago and he sounds so different. It's almost as if it's the voice of another man, or rather a different man.

Man I miss the skits, the podcasts in the end aren’t for me. I’m fine with you continuing them and incorporating them into your content but your channel grew from the skits. If there’s a reason that you have discontinued them you should at least let us know why instead of mindlessly uploading the podcasts. At this point your subscribers don’t even know of your existence because of these videos not being pushed out to their sub boxes like mine (unless you have notifications on). But still man, I would love to see this channel return to what it was built off of that made me want to subscribe. If you don’t want to do the skits anymore you should at least try to do something new that could influence more growth. How I see it, if you bring this train back up to its track you’ll get more attention with your videos, and your podcasts, and would be able to do both comfortably. In the end, this is just my constructive criticism, if you want to keep doing what you’re doing by all means do it but I’m just saying that things could be going in a much more needed direction if you would communicate more with your audience more. I’ll check in from time to time but how I and many others see it I won’t find myself enjoying this content like i used to anymore.

I think the podcasts are truly excellent, and some of the best content I've found.

@@paulrhodesquinn I’m fine with him doing podcasts I’m just saying it’s driving his channel into the ground by not doing anything else besides the podcasts. At this point he should just make a whole other channel for it.

dude the podcasts are literal knowledge and yet you want sKiTs..................., try cracking a book maybe??

@@alpha1beta1gamma idc if he continues the podcasts, if that’s something he wishes to continue then by all means he should continue doing it. Im just saying it’s the reason why his channel has plummeted into the ground over the years. I remember when he was achieving hundreds of thousands of views per video and now he’s struggling to hit a thousand. I’m just saying if he would return to his roots (or something new) along with the podcasts I feel like his channel would become better along with those new people possibly enjoying his podcasts. Win win how I see it. And if you watch the skits you would find the massive information inside them along with the driving entertainment factor to it. And yeah, for some the podcasts are the entertaining factor, but that obviously isn’t the same for more then the million people that has subscribed and have forgotten about this channel.

@@jacktaylor1758 if I remember correctly, he did explain his change of direction in an older video... he said that he was no longer interested in doing the small videos and that he didn’t care much about youtube (therefore he doesn’t care about views, or creating a new channel, which i fully understand) He is a true man, he shares knowledge for fun and does not care about reputation or popularity, he won’t do something he doesn’t like just for show

Hey man, love the videos! But there's lots of good videos that aren't in a playlist, so they've gotten buried under the podcasts. Could you either make them more accessible via a playlist, or alternatively even put the podcasts on an entirely different channel? Cheers :))

Can’t believe this channel would allow an affiliation with that abhorrent Peter Kerouac. What’s up with that? He’s peddling himself as being affiliated, that can’t be can it?

What are you on about? Your speculative comment has nothing to do with the content of the video. Are you the one dislike here? No one even knows who that Peter K guy is.
