This is Kana Anaberal's theme from Touhou 3: Phantasmagoria of Dim. (Dimensional) Dream I found a really awesome arrange of this theme months ago, and I seriously cannot find it again. I'll have to go hunting for it later...
Fun fact: this was supposed to be Yumemi's theme but it didn't fit for a final boss, so ZUN created Kana to inherit this track so it wouldn't go to waste.
@Marisa Nya That's an extremely controversial opinion but I agree with you, there are so many good songs in there that being so underrated like this should be a crime.
It's fun being in the touhou fandom, just... being here with other music enjoyers, separated by time over 9 years, all of us listening to this one song.
I love how lonely this song sounds and how it almost has the feel of someone who's given up but still continues to go on for whatever reason, perfectly fitting for Kana. She's an unstable ghost bound to a single location and, like the song and her title, she's 'lost her dreams' or doesn't really have any hope for the future until Yumemi comes along and gives her a chance to be free of the place that her entire existence is tied to. Just my thoughts when I listen to the song :p
@@f.u.m.o.5669 not exactly. I've listened to a lot of Touhou music. Like a huge amount. And i find that PC 98 Touhou just had that magic which is no longer there in ZUN's music. In Touhou 18 i barely liked a few songs compared to HRtP, where i love nearly every song.
@@GetPsyched6 Agree. The PC-98 Touhou themes mostly have a distinct "feel" and to them that isn't really present on the Windows games. It's like they are a bit more emotional and tend to fit the scenarios and backstories better than the Windows games. Also, I agree Touhou 18's soundtrack is not as great as previous entries, there's a distinctly different "style" that ZUN uses starting from Touhou 18 that makes the songs not as strong sounding as previous entries. I think Chimata's theme is a fine example, it wasn't too long ago that we had stuff like "pure furies", "little princess" and "idolatrize world" .... and then there's Chimata's theme, which doesn't sound bad per say, but just doesn't have the "WOW" factor previous songs have.
It's either this or New touhous (aside from final boss themes) that got puts aside into the rubble of ZUN's overwhelming amount of good songs under the radar
@@Staris4117 "I'd say those old characters have probably retired by now, and are warmly watching over things from various places nowadays." --ZUN, Strange Creators of Outer World/Who's Who of Humans & Youkai in Gensokyo/Yuuka Kazami Also, "-Reimu Hakurei, Marisa Kirisame, Alice Margatroid and Yuuka Kazami appear. -The Yin-Yang Orb has appeared in every game alongside Reimu, but it's unknown if it still has the same powers as it did in PC-98, or if it's still the Hakurei Shrine's greatest treasure. [Also, Misumaru was specifically written in a way that doesn't contradict even with the first game] -In Perfect Cherry Blossom, Alice refers to previously meeting Reimu in Mystic Square ("At last, former friend, we meet again. Have you only brought me your life as a gift?"). -Alice's sealed grimoire is likely to be the same as the Grimoire of Alice from Mystic Square. In Phantasmagoria of Flower View, Reimu alludes to a previous encounter with Yuuka ("Everything went back to normal when I defeated you back then!"). In Yuuka's article in Perfect Memento in Strict Sense, Hieda no Akyuu stated that Reimu has exterminated Yuuka several times (although saying it's "probably bogus"), Lotus Land Story most likely being the first. -In the very same game, Yuuka tells Marisa that she's "grown up quite a bit", referring to her being considered a child in the PC-98 era. She could also potentially be referring to one of Marisa's lines during their encounter in Lotus Land Story ("If it's going to bring me a boring life, I'd rather die!") when saying "Ah, you're still alive?". -ZUN mentioned in at least two interviews that Genjii is "probably living in the lake at the back of the shrine." In Strange and Bright Nature Deity Chapter 12, when Reimu and Marisa Kirisame were talking about "glowing moss," Reimu said it would be nice to transfer it to the pond in the back of the Hakurei Shrine and Marisa responds that she could make it grow there on the turtles' backs. It's possible that one of them is Genjii. -Mima appeared on the cover of Akyu's Untouched Score vol.4. -In the 25th chapter of Curiosities of Lotus Asia Reimu comments that the Hakurei Shrine was once taken over by an evil spirit, most likely referring to Mima who frequently haunted its vicinity and was stated to be somewhat of a cursed deity of the shrine[8]. The fact that Mima isn't mentioned by name, however, might mean it wasn't her. -In Oriental Sacred Place, a ghost similar to bakebake appears on a map that Sunny Milk was holding. It's unknown if it was meant to be a bakebake. -A similar reference is made in Urban Legend in Limbo and Antinomy of Common Flowers - when hit by Mamizou's Transformation "Futatsuiwa Clan's Curse" spell card, Sumireko turns into a bakebake-like creature. -In the above games, Marisa's 8th palette is the same as her color scheme in the PC-98 from Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream onward. -Various spell cards are references: --The infamous Love Sign "Master Spark" resembles Yuuka's penultimate Stage 5 pattern from Lotus Land Story. Given Marisa's borrowing habits (and the only other Love Sign also being a copy), it's potentially meant to be her take on it in-universe, rather than being a simple resemblance. --Marisa's Astrologic Sign "Orreries Sun" uses four magical orbs in a similar vein to her (and Mima's) PC-98 attack patterns. --Fujiwara no Mokou's Fujiwara "Wounds of Metsuzai Temple" resembles one of the attacks of Evil Eye Σ. --Sanae Kochiya's Sea Opening "Moses's Miracle" is strikingly similar to Alice's second pattern from Mystic Square's Extra Stage. --The name of Doremy Sweet's Super-Express "Dream Express" is likely to be a reference to Mystic Square's Stage 1 theme. -There are some musical references, as well: --Reimu's theme "Maiden's Capriccio" in Lotus Land Story, as well as Marisa's theme "Love-Colored Magic" in Story of Eastern Wonderland were arranged in the game Imperishable Night. Also, the music comments for Marisa's theme "Love-Colored Master Spark" stated that Marisa had five themes when the game was released, indicating that the others are from Story of Eastern Wonderland, Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream, Lotus Land Story, and the Seihou Project game Shuusou Gyoku (since Immaterial and Missing Power is chronologically before, but released after Imperishable Night). --"Nostalgic Blood of the East ~ Old World" has a part closely resembling "Plastic Mind" from Mystic Square. ZUN alludes to this in Imperishable Night's music comments. --"Eternal Dream ~ Mystical Maple" is a reprise of "Maple Dream..." from Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream. -Undefined Fantastic Object holds a good number of references: --Makai made its first post-PC-98 appearance this game, albeit with a different way of entry. Both Reimu and Marisa seem to already know Makai, whereas Sanae feels confused by the world's nature. Also, Makai was again referenced in Symposium of Post-mysticism, providing more information. --Byakuren Hijiri's Great Magic "Devil's Recitation" is incredibly similar to Shinki's penultimate attack. --Nue Houjuu appearance as a ball of light has similarities to the Mysterious Orb; their appearances are identical, and both drop items when leaving the screen, each ending with an extra life. --Marisa commonly used a wand in PC-98, and was seen with one again in this game for the first and only time in the Windows games thus far. --The Stage 6 theme, "Fires of Hokkai", contains a heartbeat sound similar to what ZUN intended for the Stage 6 theme of Mystic Square, "World's End".[9] Additionally, the later parts of the theme follow the same progression as the drum pattern in the intro part of "World's End". -Mountain of Faith's Japanese part of the title, Fuujinroku (風神録), is a callback to Story of Eastern Wonderland's title - Fuumaroku (封魔録)[10]. -While this isn't an official part of the series, ZUN composed Shinki's theme for Magus in Mystic Geometries."
This song reveals who Kana really is. Behind that cheerful smile and talk of hers, dwells haunting, eternal melancholy and loneliness. Oh, and on an unrelated note : this sounds eerily similar to "Holiday" by the Bee Gees in some parts. I heard this song on the radio the other day and I was all like "Wait, that's Vanishing Dream.", I swear.
Zun's themes don't often contain emotions such as melancholy or malice, but the ones that do are definitely the most praised ones. Not the most popular, exactly, but the most praised.
*_Kanara "Kana" Anaberal_* _必「カナ」アナベラル_ ¤ Ghost-poltergeist hybrid ☆ Recreating any Outside World object A long time ago, there was a lady in a western land who was forgotten by everyone else in the town, so she went mentally unstable and made a poltergeist duplicate of herself in Gensokyo. When she died, her soul also went to Gensokyo and fused with the poltergeist. She now haunts a ruined shack that neighbors the Scarlet Devil Mansion.
I say coincidence. They are hardly alike in any way besides their names. Anyway, this theme is truly beautiful. Brave, yet nostalgic, maybe even a bit melancholic.. Why is your profile picture of Yuuka, Suwako-chan? ;D
And the voice in the endless night Is calling me so sadly Emotion ask me to forget all It's a mistake to be carried out And the voice in the endless night Why do it making me so madly Lay off me, don't leave me What can I do?
A few years back, I was listening to this theme, when it was uploaded from someone else. There was a still picture of Kana where she was looking in your direction. Kana's story, along with her theme, made me feel rather sad for the little ghost. Not really saying it to anyone in particular, I said, "You're very lonely aren't you Kana?" out loud. I swear to *God*, Kana nodded at me. She nodded her head, before going back to being a still picture. I'm not sure if I was hallucinating or not, but that instant has remained with me for a very long time. Maybe Gensokyo is real after all...
I think that Gensokyo exist in your mind. Because we think of Gensokyo, it exists. That's at least what I think. Plus, I believe in surnatural things, as you described, and I love thinking there is "connections" with other worlds. Maybe I sound like an idiot or a crazy guy, but that's what I think. So, in my mind, I think what you saw or think you saw may be real.
Same thing with me except it was this video & i said " i hope you find a friend one day Kana" and i Swear i think i saw a tiny smile appear & then it dissapeared
Shandian Ranshao. I understand exactly what you are saying. Even now I have found strange connections, similarities and I dare say personifications of characters and events from the Touhou Project. It makes me wonder if this game is a little more real than expected.
This song...has so many emotions put in it...One of most memorably ZUN songs ever created in my opinion and I don't know how or why but I feel sorry for Kana....I feel sorry for every PC-98 character...
The tone and title of this theme best fits Kana and her past. It pictures the sorrows of neglect and abandonment that she had suffered throughout those many years of her life. This is a perfectly fitting mood for Kana because it tells a story about the pain of loneliness and forgetfulness.
she really wants to be around with the mentally unstable girl who first manifested her, and everyone else around. sadly, she's no longer alive, thus isolated poor kana.
Listening to this song and Ghostly Band ~ Phantom Ensemble, these songs share some simalarities. Like the beginning of this song and the ending of Phantom Ensemble. Well since those 4 are poltergeists, I guess it makes sense.
Aaaaaaah, PoDD. Playing this game with my nephew is so much fun! I always choose Kana, and he always chooses Yumemi. And we just have so much fun. Of course I do beat him every time, but he has fun too. Ah, man, is this game wonderful.
+Pure Precious Moon Skeleton With everyone talking about sad themes, I want to point out Border of Life (Final theme ver), Nostalgic Blood of the East ~ Old World (But that one sounds nostalgic lmao), and Green-Eyed Jealousy
I can't have enough of this song... Sometimes I go to Touhou 3's music room only to listen to this song for hours and hours and hours and it just never gets boring >-
Especially this theme. ZUN really pulled off some very fitting character themes in this game, it has some of my favorite tracks from the PC-98 era of Touhou alone!
@Sad Salad Not true LOL ZUN still owns all the PC-98 era characters (except Ellen) he just prefer making new characters rather than bring back older ones
PC98 songs have a bitter sweet feeling to them, in a sense that i can't decide if i like modern era compositions or PC98 compositions more. They're pretty different as ZUN had different musical styles between the two periods and they both have different feelings conveying them. PC98 songs seem more melancholic while some modern era songs have a more upbeat vibe to them. Even the iconic 6-7-1 progression that ZUN is known for was born in the modern era of touhou music. What can I say... mood i guess?
Honestly this is in opinion one of the most interesting characters in pc98- if that (, it's canon until it conflicts with the windows canon) still exists, then this bitch is still hunting reimu and the Robot maid is still in da closet XD
I started playing Touhou three years ago, and I still suck absolute balls at it. So, I threw myself into the fandom instead, writing fanfics and critiquing crappy ones.
You know, I'm also sorry for these characters. My first Touhou were on Windows, but I tried the Touhou PC-98, they have become my favorite. Even my favorite characters are PC-98. I will not forget as easily as it sounds. Sorry for my bad english.
this theme seems to make me feels something from deep inside my brain ( dunno but it reminds me something ) Edit : i love the bass SSG go like bzzzzttt
+ZXNova: Yes, they are really great, sometimes I cried for being so intensive. They are really like, but Kana have more poor fate for being alone, i wish she teamed up with Prismriver to haunt Hakurei Shrine, then there'll be more good story. Like this song at 1:15, and Phantom Ensemble at 1:41 Listen both at once, those agressive speed of trums and trumpet together will blow your ear away!
*[Maiden poltergeist who's lost her dreams]* KANA ANABERAL The shade of a mentally unstable girl. She normally lives (is bound to) an enormous Western-style mansion, but lately its owner has gotten used to her and won't pay her much mind, so she's thinking of moving. She thought she'd come see what all the fuss was about... ZUN's comment about the track: "She isn't human, either... When I'm making up characters, I'll write down a bunch on paper, and just choose some. This character has a pretty loli feel about her, but... The song is unusually cool. I said this before, but I'm not that good at making cute songs. This song turned out the same way... A cuter song would have been nice for this character... Aahhhh, all the songs feel kind of half-assed~ (It's cool, but it's got kind of girly instrumentation in it... ) Oh, well, it's okay. I guess I like this kind of song, after all."
Her tune remind me of Satori's.. ... Ok, about her. Not gonna lie, I found her "unsetting", there was something "wrong", a weird feeling when I met her... I thought she was some sort of a doll.. you know, doll can be eerie, or creepy... The ghost and Poltergeist thing didn't help it... neither did "Anaberal"... Then I thought she had a strong personality. - Now that I'm not playing, I can finally sit down, enjoy, and godammit, a gem! this theme is outstanding
+MegaSonicMax In the wiki description for Kana it says she was a Poltergeist created by a mentally unstable girl. Maybe that is the reason you found her unsettling?
Freyboy100 Yep, that data corroborated it. -- Um, if you don't mind, now that I remember to ask: is there a reason there are many pics of Kana with some sort of a road sign? did I miss something?
+MegaSonicMax Honestly I have no idea... But here is what I found in regards to that: When ZUN was once commenting on Kana's theme, he said that before drawing Kana, he always noted that she is "An European girl who destroys things while holding a road sign behind her back" (from Phantasmagoria of Dim. Dream Th3_08Pmd.txt). It is common to find Kana Anaberal holding a road sign or attacking somebody with it in fan art.
+Freyboy100 Great, that's what I wanted. I was missing that info. Thank you so much. I never understood it... so, I blame ZUN haha. (...destroy things or attacking people with a road sign? that's hilarious, sounds funny to me)
Holy moly Kana sing something while i was away it happened at 02:59 i was getting breakfeast and it literally sang like i cant described anything else it f-ing sang
@@pepsiant8283 well i am getting paranoid because when i sleep i just hear stuff getting move around and it is pretty cool to have a ghost in my house cause then i might team up with her to spook people
i don't know why but the fact that most of the comments were posted during my cringey 12 years old weeb period make me nostalgic, like if this theme wasn't sad enough .-.
I had listened to an arrangement of this. Personally, I think this piece has a different feel to it than the arrangement, as it sounded more...determined??? The beginning sounds great, but the main melody sounds like something I've heard of before...
***** Thanks! And yeah it was inspired by Reimu with the purple hair and the bow, but that's not my only inspiration you know... And well, sorry, I'm kind of already tangled up in my own projects >-
@@LavaCreeperPeople All Pc-98 characters still exist, they just don't appear anymore maybe because spellcard rules For examples Yuuka did appear in PoFV and you see she seem not interested with spellcard
Meh, when I first got into Bullethell shooters back when Raiden hit states so many years ago, so I knew what I was up against. Though I have a problem with memorizing the bullets, so I just do pure reflex for Touhou. It works on a few games (EoSD for sure, MoF, and a few others)
