My Sea is a story of her 20s, with IU describing it by verse: Verse 1: early 20s when she hated herself Verse 2: mid 20s when she made up her mind to comfortably head back to the endless sea inside of her Verse 3: late 20s when she eventually returned to the ocean, finding her inner balance.

IU's is a lyricist that is such a genius that koreans says that they are gratefull to be a korean since they can understand how she writes such a beautiful words in a flowerly way so when you know the langguage you will appreciate it more.

This is the best translation of My Sea and my fav line: “The child who dreamed a different dream everyday underneath the shower of wishes. Did she suffer for so long just to become me?” It comes from IUteamstarcandy translations. Edit: sorry for the word but that translation is so crappy, they literally translate it word by word. I remember a Korean living in America(fluent in Eng) said; It is hard to translate IU's self written songs. The phrases are too poetic, with so many word plays, metaphors that it loses its hangul beauty in english. And ended up saying, I'm glad that Korean is my mother tongue. Fully understanding the (meaning) of the song melts my heart.

the thing is, there are "age series" songs by her (23 (2015) - Palette (2017) - Eight (2020) - Lilac (2021) ), which congruent with what she said abt verse 1-2-3 represent her 20's [ Just Nobody's comment] also some lyrics in My Sea are like representative and callbacks to her past songs : you can see bits from Love Poem (2019), Dear Name (2017), Child Searching for A Star (2011), Last Fantasy (2011), Secret (2011), even her very early song Ugly Duckling (2008)

IU Dear name and Through the night are good. She wrote as well. By the way there is no live performance of My Sea from IU.

If you love a IU's lyric side, Eight is more an upbeat song, Winter Sleep(saying goodbye to a love one) is a melody heart rending lyrics, same with Knees(this song is about how she remembers her time sleeping on her grandma knees) and Dear Name( theres an amazing live version also)

This 'My Sea', some details/info were actually explained by IU herself when she talked with Kim Eana, another famous korean lyricist who also wrote most of IU's songs on the beginning of her career. With translation, we can barely understand and appreciate the message but on that particular video, the choice of words, syllable, vocabulary and other elements of IU song lyrics were mentioned/discussed. If you're more focused on the lyrics then I recommend Japanese songs ,I find them the deepest when it comes to meanings , start with yoasobi racing through the night , if I can draw life ,just a little bit or monster ,or anime OP or endings like demon slayer 's guren or shout baby of mha , attack on titan last ed the devil's child which might sound different depending on whether or not did you watch the show, dororo second ed and a lot others, ,anyway in this age when most doesn't give a damn what they are singing about ,Japanese poeple still care ,as of iu ,I recommend celebrity, quite interesting metaphors ,autumn morning and glasses

As a Korean who understands English, those lyrics are so wrong. Those who translate have to have responsibility.
