Aristotle's 'Poetics' is one of the Pre-eminent work of literary criticism. Where Aristotle says that Art is an "Imitation of Action". In ancient Greece, 'Mimesis' was the term used as Imitation. Mimesis was an idea that governed the creation of works of art, in particular, with correspondence to the physical world understood as a model for beauty, truth, and the good. Plato contrasted mimesis, or imitation, with diegesis, or narrative. After Plato, the meaning of mimesis eventually shifted toward a specifically literary function in ancient Greek society, and its use has changed and been reinterpreted many times since. খ্রিস্টপূর্ব তৃতীয় শতকে এরিস্টটলের লেখা 'পোয়েটিকস' গ্রন্থটি সাহিত্য-সমালোচনার ধারায় একটি প্রাতঃস্মরণীয় গ্রন্থ। যার শুরুতে রয়েছে মাইমেসিস বা অনুকরণতত্ত্বটি। এরিস্টটল বলেছেন, শিল্প হলো জীবনের অনুকরণ। এবং তিনি প্লেটোর থেকে ভিন্ন অর্থে অনুকরণকে দেখে অনুকরণের মাধম্য, অনুকরণের বিষয়, অনুকরণের রীতি বা পদ্ধতির তারতম্যে শিল্পের বিভিন্নতার ধারণা দিয়েছেন। আজকের পর্বে রইলো এরিস্টটলের 'পোয়েটিকস' থেকে তাঁর অনুকরণতত্ত্ব।
