The poem, "The Leader and the Led" by the renowned Nigerian poet, Niyi Osundare is a brief narrative story in verse form (couplets) that depicts events in a fictional animal society. Because all of the characters are animals, it is appropriate to classify the poem as a fable.
It is evident from the narrative that this animal society has been without a leader, and now the animals have gathered to select one. Those who feel capable of assuming leadership must declare their candidacy for the top position. These individuals believe that they are qualified to lead and are seeking to be selected. They have a chance to present their leadership vision in the form of a manifesto.
Here is the full list of the seven contestants.

The poem is a satire that centers around the thematic issues of leadership and followership as a concern of the socio-political topsy-turvy in most African nation-states.
