Oh the Tyranny of the Majority! Dubov's game was absolutely genius calculating over the board! While all of them were spectacular, that one was the crown jewel in my eyes.

Mathematicians call the formation of pawns on f7, h7, g6 and f5 a Quangle. Well, not really, but they should.

I have a feeling that Carlsen winning game of the year was partly due to his name recognition.

Even presidential votes end up turning into popularity contests. If we wanted a more objective "game of the year" then I guess we could have analyzed every game with a computer and based the winner off the highest performance. Or we could have just handed the trophy to alpha zero

Also possibly the case for 2nd and 3rd- two wins over the unpopular draw machine Giri.

@@irradiatedbadger though the chess game of the year is about more than performance. it's about creativity, daring to take risks, both players fighting hard, and unique elements of the game (like King said Dubov castling queenside in that position) that few players would have found or dared to play.

I voted for Dubov game, I was absolutely shocked by the Queenside castle, I don't think anybody would have done such a thing! Democracy is not always fair XD

Although this was a rapid game ist was a great performance by Carlsen. Le Quang is a really strong rapid and blitz player. Concering the push of the rook pawns. Bent Larsen was famous for this. A long time ago I read that Larsen once should have joked that when he doesn't know what to do he pushes a rook pawn.

Magnus rolled over a super GM in the center as if he's playing a kid! Oh my, talk about taking your opponent to school. Robert Hess and Yasser Seirawan's commentary at chess.com was legendary too, I watched that at least ten times

I've been impressed with the play of Le Quang Liem. He seems to play what I call "jagged chess," not holding advantages tight but zig-zagging almost randomly in the direction of anything that might work, which must make him hard to anticipate when he has the initiative. I guess he zigged when he should have zagged. If he was going to get compensation for Carlsen's strong pawns it could only come from the bishop, but Le Quang Liem's bishop accomplished nothing except to get kicked around; meanwhile Carlsen did everything right. Oh well, it was only a quick game.

Thanks, nice analysis. I'm struck that after White achieves the position at move 14 he already has a big advantage, per the engine. But, it is not a slam dunk. After 14...Nac4 15 Bxb6! a road not taken is 15... axb6!? 16. Qb3 b5!? 17. Qxb5 Qxb5 18. Nxb5 and now engines give 18...c6!? as most tenacious with many complicated lines (e.g. 19 Nc7 Rac8 20 d6? Nxd6!) . The point was that Le Quang had some decent chances and curious if he calculated any of these variations. As the game went, it seemed that Magnus easily rolled over his opponent, using "Magnus factor".

Such an apparently simple concept - central spatial control - not enough to win a game, black is solid and has piece play, controls d5, should be a draw, no? Most patzers would draw this in a blitz game, yes, maybe? Reminds me of the Fischer -Petrosian candidates game 8 where one is left wondering if Fischer cast a spell on his Soviet opponent because it seemed too simple - apparently too simple. Definition: Great players understand simple concepts very deeply.

Really great Daniel! I especially applaud the h4 “people say an AlphaZero move, BUT!” Some say a silly AZ move when Carlsen plays h4! Recently MVL h4 was called an AZ inspired move?! I recently found I haven’t been receiving your vids & forgot to vote, so voting now would be unfair, and some may say biased after hearing the results! Cheers

This may not be particularly clever of me but I've been asking myself how such a strong player as Liem, who can calculate extremely complicated lines with such rigor and precision, failed to see that after the exchange of bishops, queen goes to b3, rook to d1, and the pawns are well defended forever, till victory? How? I saw it, am not kidding. Surely, I'd anyway lose the game to Liem, but I am not a professional chess player. The question is: how do you account for the apparent contradiction that extremely good chess players miss such obvious things as if they are amateurs?

Human emotion/psychology obviously. Many games are decided by nerves and not talent.
@azice6034

There are so many other things that go into it other than just pure calculation, also its rapid so he probably didn’t spend more than 2-3 mins calculating it which makes it very likely he oversaw something or thought he could play a move to save his position when in reality he couldn’t
