Structure Fire with mutual aid provided to the city. Two 1.75" attack lines were pulled, one 2.5" attack line was pulled and a deck gun was used to extinguish this fire. This was a defensive strategy from the start since the structure was fully involved. I was the driver pumping one hose line for my crew. Verbal updates were given to the crew to so that radio traffic would not be further congested since we were parked so close to the scene. Once water supply was established to our apparatus, I was able to switch positions with someone to give them a breather which let me squirt some water. Hope this video can be useful as a training tool.

Fire Dan, don't pass a hydrant when you know you have a fire. If you are going to be attacking with your lines, drop a line on the way into the incident. I see a supply right beside your rig so there is a hydrant somewhere close. There is no rule that prevents more than one line from a hydrant. This is why you should use some type of hydrant valve. Command can decided who gets the water and where, if the lines are down. Hand jacking lines should be the exception not the standard. Your officer should have told you to drop on the way in. Lay it "dead" if you are understaffed but get the line on the ground and ready. Just food for thought: What does the term "Defensive Strategy" mean to you? Here is how I define what you did: Your "Strategy" was to confine the fire to the building of origin. Your Tactic was "an aggressive exterior attack." I preferred these terms because it more accurately describes the true situation. FF are aggressive by nature, by using terms that don' have the connotation of being non-aggressive they are more likely to make a good decision. Been there and done that, many times.

I definitely agree that there could have been more lines feeding off of the 1 hydrant. Our county practices the "Full House" set-up, which would have had 2 gate valves on the 2.5" outlets of the hydrant. However, in this case we were providing mutual aid to our neighboring city and the supply line was already being tagged/charged by the time we arrived. Again, I agree that I would have liked to hook into that hydrant from the get-go, but we were eventually able to get water from the engines on scene. Also we were not assigned a specific task upon arrival, so it was unclear as to how we were going to be utilized by command. Good points on the terminology, i've never thought about it that way but it does make sense to clearly define the goal at hand. Thanks for the informative and constructive feedback!

What took so long?? And, like the chief said, why was there not a line dropped?

Driver not supposed to leave the truck, call command or ops on radio with water level report.

Michael Lebednik I agree with you for the most part. In this case it was more of just watching the one line that we had pulled off our apparatus. It seemed easier to walk over to my crew since we were so close and I didn't want to further congest radio traffic. It was more to just let the crew know how much water we had. Eventually after water supply was set up to our truck I switched with someone else at the pump to give them a breather, which is why I was able to squirt a little water as well. Thanks for the feedback.
