POINT 1 GPS Antenna Issues

Just a video going through the install of my point 1 gps antenna. I had one issue I caused during the install and that affected the entire system. I also talk about how to setup power to a fish finder and NMEA and the point 1 gps.

Kevin Coppola 1 second ago Always make sure the NEMA backbone is on switchable power. It is not a matter of power draw, it's more a matter of if the Point1 loses signal for a long period of time (parking in a garage can sometimes cause this) it will cause it to go into hibernation mode... and then you'd have to completely disconnect it to reset it.

I plugged in my GPS point 1 to my elite 12 Ti2, but for some reason it does not show up on my device list. You mention power cable. Does it not already have power when I plug in directly into my Elite 12 Ti2 unit with NMEA t connector. Appreciate any feedback you could give me.

Elite Ti will share waypoints with HDS BUT the Ti must be powered up at all times for wp to transfer. That is the downfall of sharing with N2K. Ethernet has wp synching.

Will your Elite 9ti recognize the point 1? I just added a point 1 to my nmea and it only shows up as an option to select on my HDS, not the Elite.

Hey bud, it does recognize on the elite....i would check the t connection, after that it might be the unit itself...I sent my hds back cuz it would shut down when reading a map chip

You're right. I pulled a dumb one. After switching around and messing with settings and hardware, I noticed I didn't have the nmea plugged into the back of the Elite. I must have unhooked it the other day when I was doing some other stuff. Works like a champ. Thanks for the reply and keep up the good vids!

I've got everything hooked up and noticed it still shows your heading whether you're using it for it's GPS capabilities or not. That's pretty handy since I'm using the bow mounted HDS for it's own GPS to go over structures that were found with sidescan from the back of boat.

Haha i left two wires exposed amd tripped a circuit causing my motor trim and the hds to stop working....

If your nema is running off battery make sure you have a main battery disconnect. The point one will draw power all the time trying to ping satellites even off the water, in your garage, etc.

That it will power draw seemed very minimal...you had any experience with that?

BeyondTheBounds Oh yes. It caused a dead battery for me in between my monthly charges. I only had an issue when I wasn't fishing often, and was just charging the batteries once a month. Probably not a problem if you stay plugged in all the time.

BeyondTheBounds You have to turn power off to point one when not using. It will freeze up.

At over $1500 WHY??????? Do I need an external gps? Makes no sense. It should already have this included. These things have gotten so expensive granted they are a lot better but come on.

Nice vid. I just got a used hds 9 gen touch 2, and new elite 9 ti. My friend is coming up this week to hook them up along with the same point 1 antenna. He explained to me that we won't be running ethernet, and why. I trust his judgement. He is running 3 carbon 12's and a humminbird 360 and is basically a sciemtist with these things! We may do a video of what we do for upgrades to my boat.

BeyondTheBounds yeah. It's been in the works for a month, and he has all this stuff leftover from previous installs. Hdi uobfront and lss2 in the back. We are going to be soldering power connections and running a main kill switch for the boat, except the tilt trim. He loves this stuff. The only problem, is that I'm going to have to do some mapping! Lol

I have learned that the NMEA network needs to be on a toggle switch. That way you first turn on your units and your trolling motor (if networked), once all devises are loaded then you can turn on the switch to power up the NMEA network.

I installed Point -1 to use with my Lowrance Elite-7 and Motorguide xi5. Everything seems to be working except my installation seems to effect my Anchor lock mode and Heading lock mode performance. I read on a message board that the data source in the Lowrance Elite need to be changed so that under Vessel the GPS comes from motorguide GPS. There is a lot of things in the settings that I am not sure about. (Example Global and Local ) Do you have any comments about this or any suggestions to fix my problem?

Your video helped me find my Point 1 problem. I couldn’t figure it out until you said check if the bus was on or off. Mine was off so I was able to find the brake in my back bone. Thank you for sharing your problem!

Hey not to be a smart a## but your proplem was not the bent pin. The antenna needs switched power if not it will work for a while then it goes into hibernate mode and stop working .when you unpluged it from power it reset then you hooked it up to switched power under the dash and (fixed) the problem.
