Adding to the history of ballet vid because they showed degas paintings: by the time degas was painting ballerinas, ballet had lost most of its prestige and ballerina were low income girls trying to secure a future and financial stability for their families. These girls are shown with much older men because these men were known for essentially grooming the underage ballerinas, and many of them ended up in sex work. They were referred to by the public as “little rats” and harm done to them was never addressed.
Interesting, I had no idea, because nowadays the children that are in the Opéra de Paris dance school to become professional dancers are still called "petits rats", which means little rats.
It looks like the zamboni hasn't gone over that ice in a hot, hot minute. I would assume the "dirty" ice makes it slightly easier to maintain balance and not slip.
That vintage image of a black ballerina was a friend of mine Delores Brown. She was the ballet mistress for Alvin Ailey and was one of the singular most amazing humans I have ever met…
the ballet dancing deadpool is so en pointe (eh? EH? hehe) with deadpool as a character like i'm sure he's shown up in a full platter tutu and leotard before.
Figure skater and ballet student here... that ice had a lot of snow on it, meaning that it had been skated on a lot. It would be pretty rough compared to ice that had just been resurfaced. I think it would be less slippery than marley, actually.
Yep, I'm a (not very good) ice dancer and ballet (beginner) too, and that ice looks like the unslipperier ice I've ever seen. TBH I'm impressed by the skater because I'm too bad of a skater and that I don't feel like I could skate on at all. However I recall pointe shoes don't like moisture so I'd say these are at least treated with something. But Josephine probably knows more about that than me.
I’m not a professional dancer, but I’ve taken ballet and jazz, learned an instrument, sing, was in choir, and I was in colorguard in high school and now all my kids play instruments and my daughters are also in colorguard. And the “dancer” math is in ALL of those. I think it’s more performer math or music math than dancer math.
Over the past few days I’ve been watching the YAGP live streams and laughing at myself. Over the past year and a half while I’ve been stuck in a hospital bed I’ve watched hours of your videos and found myself fascinated by the science of fitting pointe shoes. Still it surprised me how much my attention kept drifting to the pointe shoes each dancer in the competition was wearing and the things that made my brain squeal, “OMG Somebody get that girl to Josephine!” Then I’d laugh at myself and try to stay focused on the dancer and what she was doing rather than just her feet.😂 Apparently I have overdosed on your channel.
im going to my first ballet lesson in a few hours and its all because of you !!!!! i found my interest in ballet after coming across one of your videos about a year ago and now im officially doing it!!!! im so excited and im so thankful that you make videos like this :D
I was an ice hockey equipment manager in college and wore a pair of suede moccasins all the time. Parts of the suede came out over the tread. That would stick to the ice when I crossed the rink for some of my duties. My guess is that something like that, if not suede, was on her pointe shoes.
I feel like Ryan Reynolds would totally go for the whole Deadpool on pointe idea, lol. I could just imagine a whole fight scene with Dp dancing through the whole thing in pointe shoes and doing the jumps.
OMG Dance tempo counting!!! YAAAAAAZZZZZ!!!! Brings back soooo many memories!! I've never danced en pointe but always wanted to. I was more of a Modern/Ethnic dancer but started off taking ballet when I was just a wee one. Hated it because I was built all wrong for ballet. Broad shoulders, short-waisted, wide-hipped, but had a natural turn-out that drove my dance teachers insane! Also having a very slight Scoliosis in my lower spine. I remember my dance teachers being dumbfounded when I took so naturally to so many dance styles. Sadly that scoliosis prevented me from being able to do multiple spins/turns, I'd go off balance after 1.5, but I still loved to dance and did so for many years.
My mind was blown when you reacted to Littlesiha/Avery! Her journey to becoming a coach in the game has been so inspiring in the whole Just Dance community. I’d love it if you tried playing the game or reacting to it sometime!
Never took a ballet class in my life but have a little girls lifelong obsession with the shoes and the dresses and just the beauty of it. I have binged your entire back catalogue of videos and you’re probably the only creator on RU-vid I can say that about. I am now fluent in ballet shoe terminology and could probably pass an exam. 😂
I feel like sopranos and ballet dancers have so much in common because we spend a lot of time learning and practicing how to do things with (basically) just our bodies that other people can't do, and that we arguably should not be doing
I was a dancer and that sounded so normal to me. Does it really sound odd to anyone?? 😂 That tap dancing ballerina was insane!!!! Talk about innovation and talent!
I went to high school with the savanna banana guy and just remember thinking he was so cool. He was a couple years older than me, but I remember him being a big deal in our theater department but I never knew he could dance like that until years later.
I think its so funny watching people in costume do ballet because its not what were used to! We are used to ballet being so graceful and elegant and its really not when your in a costume LOL!
on ✨counting✨ lol: I'm not a dancer (past a few years of casual dance class when I was little), but I do have two degrees in music and to me this just sounds like explaining how subdividing the beat works (which is probably exactly what's happening tbh)
brilliant video as always. Have you watched Irish dancing. WOW.... Not only famouse for their sound of those shoes working ten to the dozen. But the also dance on tip of toes. Well worth a look .Thin of River Dancing when checking this out. Enjoy.
As an ice skater: you can walk on ice with regular shoes without slipping as long as you pick your feet straight up and down, and it seems like that's what she's doing (which is extremely impressive to manage while dancing). I've never seen a combo ballet/skating routine like that before!
7:43 this sounds to me like what I sound like trying to figure out the amount that I'm about to spend on groceries and deciding what I'm going to keep what needs to go back on the shelf and they're trying to tell my kids what we have to get done for the day and the things that I need them to do to help me so I can help them to help themselves to help me back.
To anyone who hasn’t……Watch Deadpool. Get frustrated/ enjoy as you wish. But there are many moments of brilliance and the physical styling of that whole character is utterly beautiful from a dance perspective so for sure watch it for at least that even if the rest of the story is not to personal taste. THEN….read the fanfiction. There’s some incredible work out there about mental health, ptsd, stuff that is amazingly funny, amazingly sad. And about how not everyone lives identical lives, but they live them anyway. I’m not a comic fan, not really a Marvel fan, but I am a fan of the characters that come out of that world and I’m in love with what fans do with them. It’s awe inspiring what people will write about when there are no commercial editors blocking their output. (Some fanfic authors are ‘real’ authors in real life btw). There’s some dross out there. But there is stuff that has made my cry my heart out or re read twenty times in special occasions as a treat.
The girl in the Just Dance clip is Avery, her YT channel is littlesiha and she does videos of her doing the different Just Dance dances. Apparently she's done this for a long time, though I didn't discover her until her videos and shorts of her journey becoming a JD dance coach. It was really cool seeing her being able to live out her dream and becoming part of the video games she loves so much.
3:50 that is LittleSiha, a youtuber who plays just dance, Just Dance is a game where you basically follow the dance on the screen, and last year she was invited by the game devs to be in the game basically
I'm from the north of Sweden. So trust me when I say that ice really isnt that slippery when it is "scrached". Like, non glassy. Ruffed up, it is totally ok for pointe. About the same as a glossy wooden floor. /Catta
As an ice dancer, I can tell you that that ice looks pretty choppy so there was probably little slide left and it actually doesn't hurt to slide on the ice on your knees.
When I hear “dancer math” I think of the mental calculations one does when performing & something is wrong (ie: injury or costume issues) to push yourself through the performance. I’ve heard of other performers doing similar things & there was a comedian who did a skit about it… I want to say it was Patton Oswald but I’m not positive. Anyway, that’s what I think of when I hear the term. 😂Although it’s probably because 9/10 times I was performing with a joint out of place (undiagnosed EDS for almost the entirety of my dance career) so the only way to get through a painful performance was to mentally calculate how much time I had left.
context about the sisters around 1.23: it started on World Ballet Day 22 (I believe), when the Ballet Master at Berlin State Ballet gave a fun combo which he himself called „pas de Balanchine“. This quickly went viral
Not a dancer but its also “Musician Math’ so I totally get it - not only do I get it Im notating it in my head as she’s counting it out cause that’s what I was taught to do.😂
There was actually a pointe shoe with a blade made to use on the ice. You had to stay on pointe for the whole performance😮 hope you can check it out in the future ~
Don't worry josephine, "Dance pool" isn't meant to serious. Deadpool is a character from Marvel who is known for messing around and breaking the fourth wall while also being a mercenary. Most characters he interacts with think of him as an overgrown child that annoys them but he also has a surprising heart of gold.
I am like the last video. I am so obsessed with ballet, although i have never done it. I see trying it in my future at this pointe 😄 i am a singer and used to play violin so dancer math is almost as bad as any music teacher math.
I hope Ryan Reynolds saw that video. The most dance I have done is Cheer in HS and some classes at my local pole studio. Yes, the counting is pretty much the same, they just add the accent move on a sound in the music.
I took ballet when I was like 7 and haven't touched it since. (it was best for everyone involved.) That said, I have fallen down the "The Pointe Shop" rabbit hole and now know an extraneous amount of information about ballet and banana feet and the like. I just wanted you to know that I have added pointe shoes to my list of autistic hyper fixations that serve absolutely no purpose other than to utterly perplex the people that know me. That said. I'm here now and I will continue to fall down this rabbit hole.
