I decided to sacrifice my body in an experiment to find out how long you can wait after contact with poison ivy before washing it off, if you want to avoid a rash. I dabbed myself with poison ivy, and washed each location off after waiting for various amounts of time, to see where a rash actually developed.
I tried washing it off after 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours, 6 hours, and 10 hours. I used warm water and dish soap, and a rag to thoroughly clean each spot. This will give some interesting insight into whether you need to wash it off immediately, or if you have some time to wait!
The video I mentioned on how to wash off poison ivy: • How to never have a se...

If you think the oil is bad in the leaves, try getting the sap from freshly cut roots on you. Probably the worst case I've ever personally had

Use cold water to rinse, warm/hot water opens up your pores allowing the oil to get deeper into your skin. Also, apply the soap/degreasing cleaner on to dry skin and wash/clean before rinsing, it will improve the removal of the oil. Repeat 2-3 times…

I’m like you. I didn’t know what the hairy vine was, so I cut it with a hand axe. Got sprayed over and over with “juice.” Missed about a week of work.

Thank you for your sacrifice my dude. Great methodology and explanations, and it’s really nice to get a solid data point for how long I can wait before getting to water/soap.

Warm water opens the pores and can make it absorb into skin faster. I’ve heard that cold water is the best for washing.

Nice content! this is what RU-vid should be - not a perfect Cal Tech research lab - just some reasonably intelligent guy giving it a shot an highlighting potential glitches in his approach. Great info - and brave!

I forgot the exact number but I read that three out of four people aren’t allergic to urushiol, the agent that causes the rash.

Thanks for the video. I am wondering how often I should wash the area after a rash develops. My Internet searches keep coming up with results regarding how soon to wash following exposure. I would like to know how long to keep treatments on my skin before washing them off and reapplying.

Have you tried rubbing alcohol? Heard it’s better at deactivating urushiol that soap (can spread). How you got it on the other arm is how I keep getting it this season while ‘being careful’ around it. 😂

I accidentally pulled some baby poison ivy plants and perhaps a small vine before I realized what it was. The rash isn't too bad. I have a few bad spots but what's really annoying is little bumps keep appearing all over the place where I didn't even think I touched it at all. It's really insidious and annoying. It's very strange too to get it on your hands when you wash your hands frequently. I keep getting little itchy bumps on my fingers. I've been washing bed sheets and clothes like crazy and I still get little bumps. UNGH

Great experiment. Too bad you can't build up an immunity to urushiol (the oil). The more exposure, the more susceptible you are to it as your body tries harder to fight it off.

Nope not how it works i uses to get it real bad as a kid now I barely get it at all. Some people literally take baths with it to build immunity for landscaping i know a guy personally who did it and he never gets it anymore.
