Hey guys in this video we talk about how to identify Poison Ivy. Poison Ivy is a commonly found plant that is known for causing dermatitis when it is touched. While foraging wild edibles it is important to know the features of this plant for identification so you don't experience the discomfort of touching it. Poison Ivy frequently grows along trees, fence posts, along the edges of gardens, and other areas where you might find yourself foraging. It can also be confused with other plants, like Virginia Creeper vine which we will talk about in this video as well. Poison Ivy has three leaflets that can take on a variable form, meaning they can look different from plant to plant, so it is important to know how to identify it.
Poison Ivy has three leaflets that can be toothed along the margins of the leaves, or they can have lobes. The leaflets can be glossy in appearance or they can be red. The plant an grow in a trailing creeping vine form along the ground, a small shrub like plant, or a climbing vine along trees or fence posts. In the summer it will produce very small flowers that are whitish green, and after that it will produce berries. These berries contain the seeds that other animals will consume to spread the seeds of this plant. This plant is notorious for the dermatitis that it will cause in those who are allergic, but not everyone is allergic to it. The essential oil of the plant can last for months on things like gloves, boots, shoes, lawnmower blades, etc. It is important to know this plant so you do not forage it.

I’m really struggling with identifying wild sarsaparilla, Black cohosh ants poison ivy right now. They all look the same to me. Sarsaparilla has three leaves too right? I’m in the driftless area of Wisconsin in the woods so I’m readily confused with the abundance of plants that grow in the woods......ugh

So if the urushiol is an oil, would having wet arms and brushing them across the plant get any of the oil on them since water and oil do not mix or blend. It's possible most of the oil won't even stick to something that's wet, just like trying to caulk an oil based caulk on something wet.

I got poison ivy on my hand in May this year and it went away after a while. Then just recently I used a pair of gloves in my locker in work and i got it again in the same spot on the same hand, I have it right now still. The urushiol oil was still inside the gloves. Putting jewelweed on the rash heals it quickly, but the jewelweed hasn't grown in up here quite yet. I love the part about animals eating the berries, I had no idea that animals ate them. In the north we call virginia creeper "Five finger ivy". I've seen a video of a lady eat it before. I'll link it below this comment.

Another very useful video Josh. I don't react to poison ivy but that doesn't mean I won't in the future, so I always keep an eye open for it. I've often seen it creeping along the ground among raspberries and blackberries - how sneaky is that?! If I see a lot of jewel weed or plantain around in an area, I am immediately suspicious, since they always grow together. Good to know the cure is nearby, but I don't want to have to use it. There are some who say that poison ivy and other plants that can cause a rash (like wild parsnip) or plants that can injure us, like hawthorn or prickly ash, are nature's way of keeping us out of lands that are recovering from human-caused disturbance. They certainly all seem to favour old farmland or recently logged areas.

Thank you for the info. Unfortunately I’m dealing with some lovely poison Ivy on both my ankles. Like a dumbass even though I figured it may be there I decided to trim the bushes at the end of the my driveway in flip flops 🤦‍♀️ normally when working outside whether it’s 20 degrees or 95 degrees I usually wear long socks and boots that I only use for yard work. The other day I arrived home from work and wanted to just get the bushes cut quickly before showering and settling in for the night. I’d already changed out of half my work clothes so I threw on my flip flops, grabbed the trimmers then realized while I was almost finished that I was literally standing on a poison ivy vine that was climbing it’s way up the telephone pole 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ never again lol

I didn't know any plant could spread by pollen . Are there other plants that spread by pollen ?
@TrilliumWildEdibles
@TrilliumWildEdibles 5 лет назад
Yes, more plants than I can list here. Generally the way it works is that the pollen hits a fertile flower, whether by wind or pollinators. That flower then produces seeds or fruit that contains seeds. Then those seeds fall to the ground and the plant spreads. Without pollen fertilization some plants can't spread because they won't produce seed. Poison ivy is an exception because it has multiple ways of spreading.

there are crawling plants everywhere, but I don't know what it is. I was fulling some weeds it just made me so itchy. I was wearing gloves but I still felt it chy and I also have this aloe vera that poke me. The tree leaves keeps falling and the dirt and mud and cat poops and the rain made it so nasty. I am going to limit the plants I will seperate them all over the yard just probably on sides but not double. Just one line not two or more, maybe it will be easier to clean if they are all separate coz the fallen leaves gets stuck in all those plants. The cats will also step on dirty things and will bring it to my house.

Use a pair of disposable rubber gloves to remove it. Be careful not to come in contact with it with your skin. Then either bury it deep or bring it somewhere in the woods where nobody will go to relocate it. Throw away the gloves after. Do not burn it, the smoke is very harmful.

It's not it just seems that way because about 85% of people are allergic to it. To your other, rather rude and misinformed comment that got hit by my comment filter: Poison Ivy contains an oil called urushiol which causes an allergic reaction in MOST people. No antihistamine doesn't stop the rash or the itching because that's not how urushiol works. Saying that it's not an allergy is plain wrong and while it's okay to be wrong as long as we learn from it's not okay to call people names. Since I doubt you'll believe me about the allergic reaction, here's a link to the page on poison Ivy, oak, and sumac from John Hopkins, one the leading medical institutions in the world: www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/allergens-poison-ivy--poison-oak

The vine going up the tree can get up to 6 inches in diameter. Notice the stem on the center leaf is longer than the stems on the other two leafs. I will work on weeds for a half hour. Then I come in, take all my clothes and wash them with detergent. Then I get in the shower with Dawn dishing soap, fels naptha, or laundry detergent and scrub, scrub, scrub. Don't forget between the fingers, the elbows, behind the ears, and groin area. I use a good wash cloth or loofah to scrub my skin. Scrub like you are trying to get automotive grease off of you.

@TrilliumWildEdibles
@TrilliumWildEdibles 2 года назад
I've never heard of Boston ivy before now so I wouldn't have been able to cover it. After looking at it it could be that they don't look very similar or people not having it in their locale or even like my case I didn't know of it. That's just my guess though.
@itbarthur4u
@itbarthur4u 2 года назад
@@TrilliumWildEdibles @Trillium: Wild Edibles After additional thought and research I can understand why you haven't heard of Boston ivy. It is an ornamental non-native vine. It also has variable leaves depending on its stage of growth and cultivar . Boston ivy at one state of growth looks more like poison ivy than anything else I have seen. The only place one is likely to see Boston ivy is in a city.
