Use two layers of clothes, two pairs of gloves, cotton gloves, Atlas gloves XLg, mask or bandana for the face, long socks, safety goggles, garden forks, 55 gallon trash bags. Loosen the earth, pull/roll and bag. Then wash with cold water and dish soap, at least twice, that's nice, as soon as possible!

Just learned not long ago that one won’t get the rash if you wash up to 10 mins after exposure. I use hand sanitizer clipped on my back pack for when I get exposed on my hikes. It works! I used to get tore up with poison ivy, sumac and oak before I found out that handy dandy info. Sharing is caring.

You can mow over the poison Ivy. If you do that each lawn mowing over the course of a single spring/summer it will just die out. I did that many times growing up on my parent farm who had a big yard. I suppose the roots keep growing, but only having a short stem with only a few leaves overwhelms that ever growing root system which eventually can't be sustained, killing it.

Hey Scott, I am in the poison ivy nearly everyday, and I wash my all my clothes with regular detergent, in warm water, and use the dryer to dry them. I am not sure if it is the water from the wash or the heat from the dryer that make the urushiol inert and no longer hurtful. I always handle the dirty laundry with cotton gloves and a long sleeve shirt. I have never tried bleach or vinegar to wash myself, and no longer wash my boots or outer layer of gloves, they go in separate bags, to be used until they wear out.

I’ve been battling a very mature system of poison ivy along the side of my new (1960’s) house. It got me bad this last summer when I used a weed waking , not fully realizing what I was up against. The vines make up hundreds of feet in a 50 sq foot area. I ripped up a bunch of it last week using a shovel and eventually a gloved hand. It got me again, but only bit this little. I need better gloves and plan to tear up more of it.
@peskypetebarron3345

Hi, thank you for watching! I wear 2 pairs of gloves, first a cotton-polyester mix, about a dollar a pair, then a pair of Atlas 772, big yellow gloves, used in marine care and cow birthing, $16-$18 on amazon. I find a 2.5 pickaxe to be more satisfying than a spade, though the business started with only a spade. Follow up is very important, over the warmer months, any bits of missed roots will grow back within 1-3 months, it's good to get them when they are small. Setting small goals, say an area 5ft by 5ft, 10ft by 10ft, or limiting the time, say 1 or 2 hours, can be helpful for your mental state because large jobs can seem overwhelming, it's good to break them up into smaller bites. Last tip: wash with cold water and dish soap, wash twice that's nice! And use a terry clothe towel to dry, creating a warm friction will ensure less chance of rash. Thanks again!

Have a substantial thick barked poison ivy which has been growing for 4 or 5 years, each year I cut it back and fence it off. Each year it comes back. the bark is thick as my thumb. It has matured between my neighbors house and ours. Someone said pour vinegar on the whole thing. Any suggestions?
@peskypetebarron3345
@peskypetebarron3345 5 лет назад
Hi, thanks for the question. Vinegar alone is not going to do it. Sometimes I work near patios, driveways that abutt garages and retaining walls, places where I cant get a tool in to loosen the earth, and I use a salt water mixture of 26oz of salt to one gallon of water with a 3 second squeeze of dish soap, not all the salt will dissolve. This mix will only treat an area as big as a bread box and is poured, not sprayed, on the ground as close to any visible roots as possible, if you have 5 square feet, you will need 5 gallons, it will kill everything except a large tree. Consider doing it in sections, one section a week or one section a month. I'm in the pi everyday and use cold water, dish soap and dry firmly with a Terri clothe towel. Hope this is helpful. Thanks again, pesky pete

Salt helps. I am presently working on killing huge plants. I am spraying with salt water with dawn added. It takes a few treatments then we will scrape it up and dispose of it. I am using an 8 gallon power sprayer on my 4 x 4 with a hand held wand to do the fence line. Once we get that done I am looking to install a boom to treat the open ground. We have 20 acres of land with a substantial infestation but the most out of control area is the fence line.

You can do it this way, but it will only be the first step. Unless you are religious about loosening ALL the poison ivy (and he clearly is not doing this), when you pull the vines up you'll leave roots behind, and they WILL sprout. For instance, when he shows the main root, you can see a few white spots. Those are where smaller roots have broken off - and they WILL come back. In a few months or early summer next year, you'll have to come back and look carefully for shoots, then dig them up, remove them from the dirt without breaking them.

Hi Wirebrush, thank you for your comments! You are right, to reduce the time of the video, I pre-dig the area, then dig a little, rip and tear, roll into a ball and toss near the bag. I also kindly ask customers to put reminders on their calendar to check for regrowth and contact me 8f they see any. I got this from hey this is my garden article: 'When it comes to stubborn, deep rooted poison ivy plants, attacking them at the soil level seems to have the most success. And one of the best ways to do that is with rock salt. Rock salt is a mineral that forms as salty water dries out. And when placed around the roots of ivy, it will dry it out, killing it in the process.' Also I have a cousin who is in property management and he says he uses rock salt by the wheelbarrow to get rid of their poison ivy, when I asked him what he does when it grows back, he said they add more. I use this mix when I cannot fit a tool into a cemented rock wall, or area usually near garage or shed which is cemented and poison ivy grows out okay. I use my own mix only for those areas. However I am thinking to do a complete removal first and spraying after with a homegrown mix using salt water and dish soap.
