ABOUT ME:
They call me The Whiskey Chaser and I'm just a bit of a Whiskey nerd/enthusiast. And when creating these videos I only really have one goal - to make your understanding of Irish Whiskey that much better! Well that, and have a bit of entertainment at the same time. And maybe hopefully have you learn a few things along the way and laugh. Okay so maybe not one goal maybe four!
I’m not into those videos that are monotone and busting out fact after fact on whiskeys, no character no nothin. If that's what you’re looking for then keep on rollin baby, this channel isn’t for you! But if you wanna have a little fun while (hopefully) learning, then what are you waiting for, subscribe, and get comfy!
Whiskey isn’t that hard to understand it just has to be delicious!

Here in the States, whiskey was a convenient way to transport grain. People lived in areas with no roads or poor roads. Grain was bulky and hard to transport. But whiskey was much less bulky. So people turned their grain into whiskey, so it was easier to get a product to market.

I have had both. My brother knew a bootlegger in Georgia, and he gave me a mason jar of Moonshine. In the early 90's, we spent a week on Mason Island in Galway Bay. The person that rented us the stone cottage had several businesses. He was the mayor of the town, the undertaker, made Potin, and several other "trades". His wife was knitted Irish swatters and taught Irish. Our final night on the island, they came over for a Mexican dinner (we always bring real Mexican food supplies to Europe) and supplied desert. They brought apple pie, cream, and potin for some Irish Coffee. The Potin was in a 2-liter 7up bottle and still warm. I also have a bottle of commercially available Potin. All that said, I am unimpressed. I found the flavor of each not to my liking, it had an astringent taste, along with the high alcohol content that overwhelmed the senses. But, using it in Irish Coffee, was just fine.

Yea depends on the distiller tbh. I really loved the killowen poitín I think it’s fantastic. But again not all poitín s are alike. Thanks for the comment Earl. Great story!

@@TheWhiskeyChaserBrian I looked through my booze cabinet and found my bottle of poitín. It is a bottle of Bunatty from County Clare. Taking your advice, I decided to try it again and not just use it a bar-b-que starter. My impression, on the noise, there is a slight order of gasoline (petrol) and not much else. On the pallet, there is a definitely Anis coming through. There is also an oily feel. I think that I will reserve it for the bar-b-que but I am willing to look for another the next time I am over there. In the meantime, back to Redbreast 12 year old.

I've had ole smokey moonshine and wanting to try potcheen but unsure which to buy. I'd say moonshine is in part technically by recipe(s) a moonshine

It depends on the mash bill. There are variations. Try any of the off the shelf poitin first and see how you go

Remember the Potato was never in Ireland until Sir Walter Raleigh brought them and cultivated them on a patch of land in the Kingdom of Cork in the late 1500's. And so I would imagine that people being people will use whatever is near for beer and spirits. But think how interesting Ireland would have been/be if they had been catching rum from the wor-rum instead of poteen?

PS there is a party that I attend annually that centers around a hot air balloon festival and dozens of old friends camping out in another friend's property next door. In addition to the many old time rock bands most of them look forward to the retired West Virginia State Trooper who bar-be-cues a hug pit full of meat and sells Apple Pie Moonshine our of the back of his truck. Yum yum.

Poitin is like a New make ?
@TheWhiskeyChaserBrian
@TheWhiskeyChaserBrian 2 года назад
Basically yes. However, the final product may not be in as high of an ABV or Proof as new make spirit straight from a still. It differs greatly from whiskey in the ingredients used and the fact that there is no maturation process.
