"Pokémania": 1999 MSNBC Pokémon News Report

As a child, watching adults try as hard as they could to understand what made Pokémon appealing to children and fail miserably was possibly the funniest thing ever. As the approach of Pokémon: The First Movie became imminent, MSNBC took it upon themselves to explain "what all the fuss is about", and they accomplished this by having Ira Gallen on the show to advertise as many Pokémon products as possible.
Ira Gallen has his own RU-vid channel at / tvdays and you can view his (apparently quite old, judging by the layout) Pokémon webpage at www.tvdays.com/pokemon.htm
Bonus points to anyone who recognizes which episode of The Simpsons this was recorded over without looking at the tags.

@@unf3z4nt Pokemon is the highest-grossing media franchise of all time. Bigger than Star Wars, Marvel, Mickey Mouse, Mario, Disney Princess, Dragon Ball, Harry Potter, etc. Pokemon is a phenomenon like no other. Pokemania never truly went away. It may have felt like it went away, but it was always there right under our noses. Even before Pokemon Go, the Pokemon anime series was approaching 20 seasons, every mainline Pokemon game was selling tens of millions, the Pokemon trading card game had sold 20 billion cards, and the Pokemon franchise was grossing billions every year. And during that time, new generations of children were being introduced to Pokemon. Pokemania fluctuates, with highs and lows, but it's been consistent. Even in its low periods, the Pokemon franchise was grossing billions every year, which is more than what other big franchises gross even at their peaks. And in its high periods, Pokemon has been grossing as much as $10 billion annually, like it has in recent years since Pokemon Go.
@RazorEdge2006
@RazorEdge2006 5 лет назад
@svin List of highest-grossing media franchises: Pokemon - $90 billion Mickey Mouse - $70 billion It's also worth noting that Pokemon Go has been downloaded by over a billion players worldwide. And the Pokemon anime has a similar number of viewers worldwide. Sure, older generations recognise Mickey Mouse more, but younger generations recognise Pokemon more. As for Mario, that's the biggest game franchise, whereas Pokemon is the biggest media franchise. Mario has sold more video games, but Pokemon has sold more across all media and merchandise.

I find it to be a good thing that most parents disagreed with the psychiatrist who spoke out against Pokémon because of her opinion that the so-called “message” of Pokémon was violence (which it really isn’t). After all, I myself like Pokémon, and I feel that the message with Pokémon is actually friendship and not violence. :) I especially like the mom who said she thought Pokémon was an OK thing for the kids because it was a big help with saving their allowance to budget for the trading cards, as well as learning to trade and be reasonable with their friends when it came to the trading cards as well.

Pokémon in the late 90's/early 2000's was such a time to be a kid. It has never really exploded as well as it did when it first came out (Though when Pokémon Go came out, I felt like I got to relive a little bit of that feeling in the summer). What is great is that it wasn't just a fad; I still play the games, long after first starting-up my yellow Game Boy Colour, and selecting Charmander, back in 1998.

I did my school year 6 speech on "obsessions" in 1999 and came first in the class, and then won the finals out of my whole school (along with another person as they needed two finalists, boy and girl). My main subject matter was Pokemon! I think the kids liked it because they could relate to the crazes (Pokemon, Game-boys, marbles, skate gear etc), and the parents, teachers, and judges related to how obsessed essentially EVERY kid was with them :)

Why is it that when Pokemon or other popular Japanese products and shows make news the reporters always have to emphasize the fact that it's Japanese and sound disgusted by it.
@matttehkat
@matttehkat 9 лет назад
Because those reporters grew up in the 60's through the 80's, a time when Nationalism was at a high and there was a lot of fear and distrust of Asia due to the spread of communism there. They also probably had parents or grandparents who fought in WWII who had resentment and fear of the Japanese because of their relentless and fearless fighting style, poor treatment of PoWs, and obviously the attack on Pearl Harbor. In addition, the late 20th century saw a rise in the popularity of Evangelical Christian television programs, and often the preachers on these programs taught that fantasy products such as pokemon were evil and somehow were causing kids to commit suicide and worship the devil.
@whiteglove1935
@whiteglove1935 8 лет назад
Well, if America has a thing against foreign products, why not make better ones? Commercial Cars: Germany and Japan. Comics, Animation, and video games: Japan. Cuisines: Morocco, Italy, and France. Music: Europe and East Asia All America has is movies,and that's only if you discount post-1990's
