Barry was the best example of a friendly rival. He wasn't a dick, but impatient and that impatience allowed him to constantly be 11 steps ahead of you. He was kind, yet didn't let your friendship get in the way of him blasting through gyms.
Yeah, friendly rivals should be what they are. A friendly rival. Rivals in the past were complete assholes (Which I do love), but now they're just doormats waiting to be stepped on. Barry was friendly and stood beside you, but was also trying to beat you. However, as long as I have a good challenge, I really don't care.
The Black/White Version 2 rival was a friendly rival with an anger issue. He cared about the main character and stood side by side with them frequently throughout the story, but was always rushing ahead to do his own thing. I personally preferred him to Barry who was a bit flavourless.
+Reshiram May/Ethan (or whatever his name was from R/S/E/ORAS, I can't seem to remember) were not assholes. The only assholes were Blue and Silver really. Serena was friendly and also was a good rival since she always tried to become stronger than the player (even though her team was weak af).
Probably zoomed all over the region splashing honey all over, waited a few hours and then zoomed around to check them all and then repeated. All while training his Pokémon and beating the Krabby out of the gym leaders and fighting you and catching more Pokémon. I never found a Munchlax :( I think I found a Heracross once though, which is the second rarest, so yay! :D Maybe. Don't really remember XD
Brenton Taylor Fair enough lol; munchlax has always been a bit of a special Pokémon, considering how difficult it is to get him, plus his inclusion in the deoxys movie
THIS is how you write a friendly rival. Rivals don’t need to be assholes but they need to still feel like a challenge and give you a reason for wanting to beat them
True. Though, while the asshole rivals are more fun to beat because it feels more satisfying, Barry really struck the middle ground being friendly, but pushing you to be better in game and making you want to win just because he's basically encouraging you to work harder.
This little bastard is my favorite rival in the series, he's so damn energetic. His energy really pumps me up for battle alongside his catchy upbeat theme.
I also love how we meet his dad later in the game, and he's just as energetic XD *THUD* Barry's dad: HEY WATCH OUT! Oh hey, sorry, didn't see you there little trainer! *THUD* Barry: HEY! WATCH WHERE YOU'RE GOING! Oh hey dad! Barry's dad: Oh hey son! Is this your friend? Barry: Yeah, gotta go train, see ya! *woosh* Barry's dad: Well, if you need me, little trainer, I'll be in the Battle Tower. See ya! *woosh* Me: ... Like father, like son.
I love how if you scroll down the comments for literally 15 minutes you find nothing but people loving Barry. There is no hate for a friendly rival. This is world piece sign
Barry's mom: don't forget your running shoes! Barry: **turns around slowly** I don't need running shoes. **sonic underground themesong plays while Barry dashes to route 201**
wally was the original friend. barry is just great value wally, but without the character development. i cant even really remember what happened to him or the last time i saw him.
Torterra: WELL IF YOU STOP BEING A LITTLE BITCH THEN MAYBE I'LL HURRY UP Protagonist(because idk which to put): Ok well I'll see you guys later, come on Empoleon! Barry: hAy! dOnT wAlK aWaY oR tHaTS aN $10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 fInE -this is what I do with my life-
the reason why Barry's Pokemon is so strong in Platinum is for one reason: Barry has been defeated many times by the player, so he trains his Pokemon to the point where he believes that they are strong enough to defeat you, so in the final battle against him, his pokemon are in the high 70s and mid 80s. he's been with his Empoleon/Torterra/Infernape since the beginning of his journey, and he has a strong bong with it, leading it to be one of the strongest Pokemon in his team. Because of the bonds with his Pokemon and how much he trained them, he's the second strongest CPU, the first being Red, of course. Barry isn't like some of the other rivals in the Pokemon series. He cares for his Pokemon. Deeply. Despite all his training, you still defeat him, but he doesn't blame his Pokemon, he still cares for them. If this guy ever becomes champion, I approve.
Yeah, Barry earned my respect ever since I played Diamond for the first time as my first core Pokémon game. Nothing like Gary. I don't remember what I used to call Barry, but for a long time I didn't know his real name until maybe I watched some more of the anime in Sinnoh. Maybe I should try watching the full Sinnoh saga, just to see Barry. After all, it's not like any of the previous seasons mean anything for the newer seasons, maybe perhaps with the exception for the season in Hoenn (I think) where Pikachu learns Volt Tackle? Trying to watch the entire Pokémon anime from episode 1 and onward is... maybe too much. Especially when each season is like a series for itself.
Officer: I’m gonna have to give you a ticket. Barry: I’m fining you for fining me. Officer: *pulling out wallet* jeez sorry kid. How much do I owe you?
In Sun and Moon you'll be able to see your opponent while battling. So that means in the DP remakes you'll be able to see him dance maybe even throughout the entire battle XD
Honestly, Barry just might be my favorite rival. He wasn't a dick but always ahead of you and wanted to be the strongest trainer. I liked his impatient nature and it always gave me a giggle as a kid.
Pokemon Masters made me miss my chaotic stupid son. I love how he introduces himself too, he's like "Hey! My name's Barry! I'm a Pokemon trainer from Twinleaf Town, and if you don't know where that is, I'm fining you a million!
Seeing Barry with an Empoleon is so weird and foreign to me, and this might be my bias as I love Torterra, but I can't see him with anything other than an Infernape. Infernape just compliments him in almost every way, the movements, the energy, it's just like it was made for him.
Mike Rider Yes, but i think is gonna be strange if they dont put BattleFrontier, BattleTree is not BF and BattleChateau too! we want BF again! WE WANT PALMER!!!
10/10 Holy shit this theme fits Barry perfectly. It's so hyper and happy, yet at the same time it's giving it its all. Barry was really the only friendly rival that actually felt like a rival rather than just a party member that wasn't a party member and would fight you sometimes. (Sorry gen 5, you're still my favorite generation, but Barry outdid your rivals by a long shot) And yea, this is a MASSIVE improvement over gen 3's rival theme.
Nah, his team was grand. I just had to make sure my team was a little more levelled up than him. My Luxray turned his Staraptor into a fried birdie 😂😂😂
Back when I was younger, I used to think Barry was unbearably annoying, but years later, I find him charming, and I even have a crush on him... He’s pretty cute, and his energetic personality and get-it-done attitude are charming.
@@ebonyman426 if it’s because he’s 10 then I 100% agree. but if it’s just because you find somebody having a crush on a game character weird then it’s not something you can stop people from doing and it’s pretty harmless for the most part
Everyone's saying they've always seen him with Infernape or Torterra but I always picked Chimchar so him having an Empoleon just fits best for me. Not to mention his anime counterpart has an Empoleon
Also Barry: [finally settles down his supposed ADHD and looks serious] GO, STARAPTOR! [said Staraptor is Assault Vested, unlike in the original battle]
EVERYBODY DO THE BARRY DANCE! Instructions I picked up somewhere: Strike a cool pose for 3 seconds. LEFT RIGHT LEFT RIGHT LEFT RIGHT LEFT RIGHT LEFT RIGHT LEFT RIGHT LEFT RIGHT!
I am the type that loves going on a journey with friends by my side and Barry is a perfect example. He may be your rival but he never puts your friendship away over becoming a top trainer. Gen 4 was the first gen i played alongside emerald but i played Gen 4 in more detail probably because i love the storyline and the rivals, and i played other games but there are some games where i feel lonely. But Barry, yes he may be high on sugar, dragging you to battle flint and volkner at the battle frontier with him as well and appearing at most inconvenient times, he'll always come at a point of your journey to catch up with you before you leave like before surfing to victory road. other NPCs who overhear our conversation also feel happy that it is nice to have friends around. When he tells you he gets strong he does get strong, but he'll always be your friend, such as climbing all the way up to spear pillar(you wouldn't expect such a friend to follow you up a huge mountain) and fight alongside you against team galactic. Of course he also wants to get revenge at Jupiter for defeating him, but he will fight alongside you, heal your pokemon and wish you the best before going into the distortion world, that was a huge favour he could do after climbing all the way up. I rate him as my favourite rival since I love knowing that i am not alone on my journey, we may be rivals after we started our journey but friendship always comes first.
They'll probably do it as a defeat animation. Speaking of defeating him, I hope they don't give him the Platinum team as he was so much harder in that game.
Barry is a friendly rival done right. He's not flat-out mean to you and fights alongside you a few times, but also believes himself to be superior to you or at least your equal and challenges you to battles confident that he can win. Even after getting punked by Jupiter and when he eventually concedes and considers you a better trainer, his confidence isn't dented in the least and he simply feels the need to cool his head a little, put more thought into his actions and train even harder than before. And his team isn't a total pushover either. There's no need to talk about his starter, Staraptor will set up on and annoy the hell out of you when given the chance, Snorlax refuses to die and Heracross is prepared to hit anything you have on your team with the force of a bullet train. He's not mean or a bully but he gets snarky with and talks down to you. He comes to respect you but never becomes your doormat. He's clearly in over his head but still feels like an actual challenge. He's the exemplary friendly rival that Gamefreak sadly couldn't follow up on Gen 6 onwards
This was literally the first battle I ever fought in my entire pokemon career (because my first game was Platinum) This music still gives me chills to this day
Barry is the rival that you could have a fun time fighting yet still want to beat the crap out of him. Not because he was a jerk, simply because he had the faster running speed and was always 4 parallel universes ahead.
I've noticed recently that almost every rival is kinda modeled to represent one of the starters, the most obvious being Blue, representing Squirtle. Barry to me really looks like he would choose Chimchar as his starter, and so on with lots of other rivals..
+Jessie Li Not at all, actually. First because Gary's still the only rival that actually became a Pokemon Champion, and second because... He has REALLY nothing in common with Barry here.
+Glyphayel Talseek True, as Barry actually gives a shit about Galactic. He fights alongside you a couple of times, notably right before Cyrus against the harder admins in a Double Battle then heals your Pokemon before the fight against Cyrus.
BlazinVoid Which is something I really like about him and DOES make him stand out from Gary. That and the double battles with Barry are actually fun, and I dunno, I kinda like his excited personality. It feels so much different from the 3 other rivals before him.
Eh, people are just wanting to bitch. Personally I like it cause it stays true to the original with their equally tiny characters. I’m dumb excited for this remake
Z moves sure!!! but after seeing the sun entries for megas... I don't think I could do that to my baby piplup/empoleon. My favourite pokemon of all time. cant put him through pain :( if they have mega stones that is
They probably won't add more Mega Stones. That's Gen VI's gimmick. We'll have Z-Moves for the starters, and possibly signature moves for them. There will be Gen 4 remakes in Gen 7, there are many reasons why they'll be made, but one that I found interesting is this; In every Generation since these Pokemon were created, you are able to obtain the Lake Trio, Heatran, Cresselia, Latios and Latias, the Regi Trio and Regigigas, in every generation. Obviously they debuted in Gen 4, you could get them in Black 2 White 2, and you could obtain them in ORAS. But mainly, there is a large selection of 4th generation Legendaries that you are able to obtain in every generation. This upon all the other hints towards remakes plus the pattern of it all indicate a remake.
I actually can't wait to see Barry in the DP remakes. He was my first rival, and by far, the best. Like he was a nice guy, someone who was actually the player's friend (something that I like about the modern rivals like Hau and Hop) but he put those feelings aside to get a strong team together and genuinely worked super hard to beat the gyms first, all without losing the friendship he has with you. He's a good rival who pushes you forward through friendly competition without being a jerk. I always feel good after battling him - I don't get pissed off, but I also don't feel guilty for beating him. 12/10 best rival and a good boi, even if he threatens to fine me a million dollars every damn time.
Barry is better in the games than the anime. They’re similar, but Barry is a bit more serious and focused in the games. He’s honestly one of the chillest rivals and is way better than the recent ones we’ve been getting. Honestly, the last good rival was Hugh from Black and White 2
Platinum ended up being the game to get me into Pokemon. I'm really hoping for a remake anytime soon. EDIT 1: AHHHHHHH REMAKESSSS CANT WAIT TO THUD AGAIN EDIT 2: They were okay
Ethan Berry Yeaaah but here's the problem...i want Ifernape(obviously) it was the most popular starter in Sinnoh so...fuck him he can have Piplup,Turtwig or even Arceus for all i care(kidding xD)
Barry's Japanese name is Jun, which is derived from Junichi Masuda Barry is Indeed named after Junichi Masuda, the same vein as Ash is named after Satoshi Tajiri
What if professor rowan actually has a time travel machine. He saw the world get destroyed at spear pillar, and then he went back in time. But him himself was too old to beat team galactic. So, he left that briefcase there in the hopes that the character we play as would find it. Pokemon diamond pearl are true examples of the butterfly effect.
i tried it and figured that out tho to be fair we all used a LOT of action replay back then we were like 8 mind you she may have bypassed the fight using walk through walls cheats and not realized but she had 8 badges before she gave barry the parcel and then as she left he arrived for the fight in jubilife to challenge her to a battle, it was very interesting to see or her cartridge was fried from how heavily AR was used i ruined a cart with that actually, got stuck in the top floor of the pkmn center not being able to use the stairs. i could even ride a bike for a single frame x3 restarted the game and it was still a bit off, the game was very laggy for some reason iirc
@@diz9606 his final team when you challenge him at the survival area in platinum lvl 81 staraptor lvl 85 infernape/torterra/empoleon lvl 83 snorlax lvl 79 rapidash/roserade lvl 81 heracross lvl 79 floatzel
I know I had commented here before, but realization struck me recently. Barry needs to give Reshiram and Zekrom a fine. Why? 'Cause of 0:13 Sounds similar... right?
