Pokémon HeartGold Version & SoulSilver Version
"Lavender Town"
Composed by Junichi Masuda, Go Ichinose, and Takuto Kitsuta
The Lavender Town theme from the original Pokémon Red and Green versions is well-known and popular, rightfully so. But I rarely see anyone talk about or perform the Johto versions of the track.
Pokémon Gold and Silver rewrite the melody and accompaniment of the original to make a much more pleasant easy listening experience by reharmonizing the piece using very familiar chords, eliminating the dissonance of the original. It also fleshes out a sweet melody in the B section. There's still a high ostinato up top, but it serves to conform to the rest of the music instead of clash with it.
The HeartGold and SoulSilver remakes take this one step further and cuts down on the high ostinato, instead focusing more on filling in the harmony implied by the sparse voicings in the gen 2 version. What is left is an extremely mellow, heartwarming transformation of the original song.
I played around with the gen 4 track and am pretty happy with what I ended up with. In the A section, the melody shines above the up-and-down left hand accompaniment that is reminiscent of the contour of the dissonant ostinato in the Kanto version. And in the B section, both hands serve to weave together several voices that create a lush texture, before it gradually thins out to return to the A section.
Enjoy! :)
