18:30 Thank you for the Critique, I'm am trying to lessen the details of my Fakemon. The spikes on Nuludine's tongue are meant to be a reference to Leatherback Sea turtles(Which is what it's also based on)

That flashlight bug gotta be the cutest fakemon ever. Like that could easily be an official pokemon and i would be totally fine with it. Dont know how to feel about evolution tho. Seems bit to much

Hey! Artist at about 6:00 here. First, thank you for the critique, I really appreciate it. This was my first true attempt at making a fakemon evolution line, and I will definitely take all the advice you gave into account if I end up making more in the future. I personally don't watch vivziepop, but seeing the pictures you showed on screen, yeah I can kind of see where you get that from. I do definitely agree that they were over designed. That was mainly because (specifically for the pre-evolution) it's meant to be just a Pokemon version of my pfp character and I tried not to stray away from that too much (the design is literally a cat with a top hat and bow tie, and also those markings). Honestly the only critique that I personally don't 100% agree with is that the evolution is the same concept but bigger. I mean it is, but mainly that evolutions need to change a ton to work as evolutions, since there's official designs that don't change much from their pre-evolutions (first thing I think of is clefairy and clefable, where clefable seems like a matured clefairly (bigger wings, and overall similar concept as a whole, at least that's how I personally see those 2 designs) But overall thanks again for including my design and giving your honest opinions on them.

I just saw the Gengar from Xenoverse and knew I had to watch this. I think that RetroWooper’s look like they would be legendarys, maybe ultra beasts. One is a Basilisk from space, and they other is a frozen spirit-demon-thing. I feel like all that detail actually works for being ultra beasts because they also have the spacey elements on one, and the unfamiliar on the other. I wouldn’t be too surprised if I was in alola and I was on Lanayrue at night, and the second one came from a wormhole, and maybe the first popped out in space, and assigned itself to be a guardian/guide of minior. It looks like it would appear as a shooting star when it flew fast around the atmosphere.

21:05 i understand things are overdesigned, but this elephant is incredible. Its complex, but nothing on it looks unsightly to me, it all fits nicely together and has a nice consistency with colours

The Polargeist is a lemur. I think that's because the word lemur translates to something ghost type related. And for the ice part it's a yeti, which has another connection to the lemur since things like Bigfoot and the yeti are suppose to be primates in some cultures. Though it could also be a yokai of some sort, I have seen it's face somewhere.

Artists from Druos Region here :) [22:22] Thanks for the critic :) I absolutly see your points with the overdesigned aspect in the final stage, it just part of my style (also i already reduced it by a lot here, it was way worse :D). The Bear is basically a walking armor (hollow inside) and the arcane type shall be a new typing, a kind of countar part to fairy. The green stuff, that comes out of it's neck is basically energy (similar to ghastly's fog/mist). I love the "noob-to-boss-transformations" like magicarp, that something i try to implement in most of my fakemon :) Thanks for taking our design into your Video :)

Here's something I've noticed about pokemon and fakemon design. It's the lighting. For the most part, most official art of pokemon have these three levels of lighting. You have the base color, the lighter version and the darker version. And the key here is that the transition is harsh. The fade isn't really a fade, it's more like multiple edges running next to each other. Radiants happen, but that isn't really a shading thing and more a general design thing.

When i design a fakemon, i always do a concept art first, then do pixel art, and then tweak the concept art so that every detail can be clearly seen on the pixel art

I think the electric ghost cat fakemon was pretty good. Idk how you could critique the hat as too hat looking when there are many pokemon that have items (ie hitmonchans glove, machokeand machamp belts. Jynxs Madonna outfit. Etc) just my input

I really like this series. Even though I haven't submitted any of my designs, seeing you break down what works and what doesn't about these fakemon gives me ideas on how I could refine my own.

The pokemon artist at 21:40 feels like its making pokemon from another dimension. Its like the middleground between the ultrabeast dimension and the normal dimension.

I don’t have a Twitter, but I wanted to share my favorite mon ive made!: It’s a water type Heliolisk with a umbrella around its neck instead of a solar panel, it’s eyes are closed and almost has rain boots :) It’s kinda hard to explain, but I’m really happy with it!

When it comes to critiquing style vs SKILL I think the best way to go about it, is to recommend minor tweaks that would better fit the Pokemon style. There's nothing wrong with being inspired by popular art, ESPECIALLY vivziepop's style. It's pretty iconic, but you're right, that type of style wouldn't really translate well into Pokemon. BUT that doesn't stop artists from taking those characters, and working them into their own style. A big trend I see is giving Alastor a more realistic human shaped body almost like a mix of realistic anime, vs a wide chest, thin torso, and thin long legs. And it works. It's hard to critique style, because it's so often that style gets misconstrued with SKILL or QUALITY. This happened a LOT with the Sun and Moon anime; people CONSTANTLY kept saying the anime was AWFUL looking, quality wise, when in fact the animation was some of the best I've seen. But they just didn't like they STYLE. And that's gonna be subjective no matter how you slice it.

I love that Ron’s critiques meet everyone at their level. If an artist is choosing to lean more into their own art style, he doesn’t mention what could change to make it look more like Sugimori art but if the art looks like that was a goal of their’s, Ron gives advice on how to try to achieve the Sugimori artsyle.

I made a pokemon that is a singular pigeon, then goes into a "Homing" of pigeons after the opponent uses a food-like pokemon or move. Its called Homidgeon, and acts similar to wishiwashi. I also made a Regi that is based off the Ancient Egypt Era, Reginopic, based off the canopic jars used to store the organs of the dead. It has mummy bandages for arms, and has an ability that let its binding moves deal more damage and last longer. Last one, I made a regional variant of Mimikyu that's Normal-Ghost, and it was the substitute doll. It has a unique ability that let it make a substitute whenever it was hit by a contact move.

Oh my dear lord, I am in AWE with Dipsco. It's everything a Pokemon of its kind should be- funky, cute, creative, stylistic, unique and pleasing to look at it. If I had 3 genie wishes, 1 would be to be able to use that guy in a playthrough.

Your critiques are very accurate. You actually understand a lot about how a pokemon should be designed and i like and appreciate this type of videos, because i dont see this type of content that much. This helps artists to learn a lot 🙌

I rarely comment but I want to chime in to say I appreciate a lot how you critique. I know a lot of artists and know how hard it is to grt critique, how vulnerable it makes you to ask for critique and how hard it is to give good critique. So proper to you for even making this kind of video, and thanks in behalf of all the artists for doing them. And congratulations for the way you critique: you may not always be right (but it's art, that's the point), but your comments are specific, respectful, and you always stress what's good in a design, even if it has clear flaws I really hope to see part 3 of this video, and maybe other fakemon channels will pick up on this idea and do it too Keep it up!

Mhm ron knows what he's talking abt! I also have a similar principle whenever I do my fakemon. The less is more principle is very important to keep in mind. Add that, i have observed thag pokemon use simple shapes to execute really good designs, witb exceptions ofc. Great critiques all in all! (And i hope i get into one of these vids lol)

Blaziken was created with the sole purpose of saying "yea, a Pokemon can look like a dude in a costume, don't you dare say otherwise", so "it looks like a dude in a costume" doesn't work as a criticism of a Pokemon design. Also, the reason Pokemon designs were simplistic is leftover from the pre-3d days, where any designs had to work as sprites without becoming a garbled mess.

I LOVE your art critique videos, the advice is really awesome for any artist. I have a really hard time replicating Sugimori coloring and shading. Is there any way you can make a video giving tips on that?? Like how much to shade and what the best brushes are. That'd be soooo helpful

Drawing prompt idea: Failed legendary replication. Always liked the idea that ditto and porygon were two research teams trying to replicate mew but failed could be interesting to see team aqua and mama's interpretation.

You know what… now that scarlet and violet are out I feel like the criticism of the art being too detailed is a bit unfair not because of the future or past forms but simply because pokemon as a franchise just hadn’t been putting that much effort into designs to begin with. i mean, i guess in the sense too many details can be a bit much for a pokemon design, but i love the many small details and designs like Citipati has. while i get where your coming from. i wish i had the eye and coordination to get that much detail in my art.

20:38 the turtle tongue gave me inspiration. You know how a real turtle has that horrible looking bumpy mouth and then I snapping turtle has a tongue that looks like a worm lure. So what about a Pokemon that had a flower tongue because it's an insectivore and is trying to lure in bugs to its flower tongue. It could stay a turtle because they're slow in the ambush predator waiting for these bugs to come to it don't make it a plant type cuz it's a mimicmon. And typing doesn't really matter it could be normal, Rock, water, dark or dragon.

At 23:00 I think making the proportions more similar to a bear, like ursaring or beartic, they expand of the topic of a bear but with more fantasy elements. Pangoro too with a panda, it looks like a panda while being something more

Antillery looks more like a Digimon I'd say.
