To add a bit more in Team Galactic ( without mentioning Legends), they are the biggest irony in all Pokémon. They aim for the stars, but they look flat. Cyrus yearns for an emotionless world, but his Pokémon evolve through friendship. Cyrus looks like one of the oldest bosses, but he's quite young ( 26 years old, i think). Also it makes sense that the Aether foundation stands out, they were the first suprise bad guys
I love how extreme the leaders of Team Star get. They're not worried about looking corporate, about looking coordinated, about anything. They look like outfits you might get if you asked young teens to design the coolest outfits they could imagine, which is _perfect_ for their characters.
which also makes sense considering that in canon atticus made the outfits! so they really played well with the idea of teens designing the coolest fiercest outfits they could imagine
29:17 agreed with everything that you said. To me the designs on the knees remind me of Alolan Muk which in turn remind me of oil spill rainbows on water. Obviously it doesn't show the full range of the rainbow but the bright shimmer of the key colours like pink and green and purple is what remind me so much of oil spills
I remember when team skull was announced people were really happy, mainly because many thought that team flare was overly campy and had motivations that were very sci fi and over the top, so an evil team that’s just a petty crime gang was seen as a breath of fresh air.
There's so much thought put into Lusamine's appearance, it's insane. Like you said, she gives off a deceptively nice, motherly appearance, and her obsession with ultra beasts is in plain sight, she literally based her appearance around one, Pheromosa. Even crazier, the ultra beast she gets closest to, Nihilego; she dressed her own daughter Lillie after that one. By the end of the game, Lillie changes her outfit, symbolizing how she's no longer controlled by her mother. Using clothes to convey a story is nuts, but I think they nailed it.
Giovanni having a plain sense of fashion makes sense though: He's a mob boss and wearing a shiny arcanine fur coat on a night out to see a league match is the quickest way to attract the authorities.
@XDF I guess he isn't a very flamboyant man, despite the name Rainbow Rocket. Maxie always had that attitude to match his designs (I always imagine him with Wesker's voice), but I disagree about the horns. Then again I like horns on headwear.
Ik you might not be that familiar with Pokemon design choices from a meta standpoint, but I was surprised you didn't mention the meta aspects of N's outfit. It mimics the fashion choice of previous player characters - most obviously the hat, every pokemon PC has had some kind of headwear and are most iconically associated with the baseball cap due to Red and Ash. But also, the overshirt/jacket, which *most* of the pokemon boy characters have in some form. I always took this to be deliberate - N was raised to be the "hero" of the story after all. Also, I love how the outfit has a lot of black/white contrast (of course) with emphasis on white. It adds to him being kind of a "manufactured" Messiah figure, as Jesus is often depicted wearing pure white. I could go on - there's so much storytelling just baked into his design and, *ugh*, it's so good. I'm new to your channel, this vid just popped into my recommended. But I definitely will be checking you out. Thanks!
Definitely agree on Galactic feeling a bit too flat. Both Plasma and Aether do the clean and sophisticated look while still feeling personal, like they're not JUST wearing a uniform
With Mela you definitely need to look at her walking animation. Because the boots are so high and made from a really stiff material she can't bend her knees and needs to walk kinda like a wind-up toy? It's really giving the run-way/high fashion look and I love the attention to detail from the animators.
"Attention to detail" lmao yea except they still gave her the same walking animation in the DLC when she wears her school outfit (where she's wearing normal shoes). Scarlet and Violet are a barren wasteland when it comes to attention to detail and polish.
they did keep the make-up belt for Petrel for the mobile game Pokemon Masters! (the names for Proton and Petrel were swapped, though Proton does keep the grunt cap while the other executives didn’t) and also Archer didn’t get his Lets Go Pikachu/Eevee outfit showcased here. as he was in the game, the dark grey + black combination makes him look more akin to Giovanni’s suit which looks really nice and sophisticated.
I’m glad Team Flare made it up so high considering they are a team ENTIRELY focused on beauty and fashion. Also, COMPLETELY agree on Lysandre’s look. It’s such a simple look, but god damn does he look good.
@XDF I'd also like to add that Lysandre's ideology is that the world is becoming more and more ugly and that it needs to stay beautiful. All of his staff interpreted this as 'Ugly is bad and we must be fashionable and only beautiful people will prosper." But no, Lysandre was talking about human development and things being alive and sought to completely destroy the world with a life-stealing super weapon in order to "keep the world beautiful."
Lysandre is honestly one of the darkest Pokemon villains that people skip over because if how the team itself is presented. I'd say he's up there with Cyrus (Wants to destroy reality abd recreate a new reality devoid of emotion) and Ghetsis (Willing to murder people and enslave Pokemon to obtain power over others)
Also, Lusamine has a similar ideal, but handles it differently. She's shown to keep "beautiful" Pokemon. Including ones that are very much dead and on display. She "collects" living things for their beauty. Oh, and she's also a neglectful child abuser who abandoned her children and forced them to raise themselves, and has no qualms about abusive her children for the sake of obtaining beauty.
Fun fact about Team Star, Atticus is the team's tailor and explicitly is the one who designed and made all of their outfits. You even get to do a post-story sidequest where you help him break into the market and can even buy some clothes off him at the auction house. Hilariously, Penny is the only one who's outfit wasn't made by Atticus and it ended up being by far the one you like least. XP
The fact that Atticus can low-key pull-off such a unique look, it makes sense he has some sense of style. Unfortunate that Penny couldn't benefit from his talent 😅
@@NicoNicoNessieSub no? She admitted to the academy administrators that she orchestrated the Team Star fiasco and took the fall for the admins to protect them. As her punishment she had to go back to Galar for a year.
Aw I like the horns haha... I'll be the first to admit they're giving less "high fashion" and more "edgy teenager" but I can't help myself, I'm a total sucker for that cute + evil aesthetic.
I thought it was interesting that lusamine has a theme for see through fashion, her skirt and her heels for example. It reflects her obsession with nihilego which is a pokemon that has a see through head.
Not only that, but the people closely related to her tend to have an ultra beast theming to them too! Best seen with Lillie, whose initial design looks so much like a Nihilego. Guzma also kinda looks like Xurkitree
Team Flare feels like the comedy queens that can still serve a look, and then Aether Foundation are the Pageant Queens that gather you if you step out of line
The Aether Foundation is also my fave looks. Good color psychology as well, choosing all white to convey they are a benevolent group (although they are actually not).
I just noticed the Team Star suspenders hanging below thanks to you omg. I hated the suspenders in the limited clothing options that the game gave us, so of course the rebel students who don't wanna play by the rules don't wear them as intended! Looks amazing this way :D
Indigo Disk does give you the option to get a Team Star "uniform" by doing the Team Star tutoring sidequest and it looks way better than the normal options by a long shot
1) Completely agree that Team Rocket will always be iconic. 2) Weirdly, Gladion is not wearing shoulder pads. That is a hood, which makes me wonder if this was purposeful for him in lore or if it is simply a reflection of him falling on hard times as implied in the game. I do not blame the mistake because they do look like shoulder pads after you mentioned it. 3) Colress is one of the few non-Professor characters who actually rocks the lab coat look. What an icon! 4) Shelly got a mega upgrade. Don’t get me wrong, I love red-heads (which she was in her first design), but the darker skin color with the blue bodysuit does give off more someone who spends time in the ocean. 5) God, Courtney has no right to be this devilishly gorgeous. For the kiddo’s wondering what I mean, she is basically (to me) on that nerdier team as that one hot girl who was so smart that she qualified for the AP classes. 6) I am really surprised that the Team Flare Grunts were praised highly. And I say this as someone who loves the color red. But, I don’t know. For a team so big on high fashion for the rich, they felt too uniform. Somehow, the admins managed to pull it off way better in my opinion. 7) Scarlet and Violet really went hard on these incredible designs. Also, serving some gay-coding too. (It’s not impossible, but I would be surprised if Ortega was not leaning into that). Eri has the most interesting concept though of a muscle girl who is super in touch with her feminine side rather than going full-on tomboy. 8) Lusamine will always be my favorite villain design. It is giving Emma Frost as a Pokemon trainer. Lol!
I love how feminine Eri looks while being a gigantic fighting type user with a luchador vibe. She's like a cross between a wrestler and a magical girl. And she makes it work.
Ooo I was about to point out the Gladion hoodie as well. As well as Colress' glasses don't curl around his head, that blue streak around his head is his hair lol
Honestly I like the silhouettes and designs of everyone in Team Flare. I just wish that the bright orange red color wasn’t so dominant. Lysandre and Malva are my favorite designs bc of the color balance.
Cyrus is a nihilist, so it does make sense that he does not put the most effort into superficial things like uniforms. I do prefer his ancestor tho, and the default uniform you get there. It feels very home-y, warm, in comparison.
I just realized what you were talking about with Colress’ glasses. I’m sorry to say that that’s not his glasses wrapping around his head, that’s just his hair😂 For some reason he has a long strand of blue hair that he wraps around his head. And I totally agree with your assessment his Gen 7 design, he really rocks his new look. Though I’ll always have a soft spot for his old plain lab coat from Black and White 2.
I live the honesty of this video. It's not trying to be an objective end all be all. It's comfy, feels based, breakdown of broad fashion trends and we need more content like this on RU-vid
I think you should see the hatsune miku x pokemon collab, it’s a selection of different outfits that hatsune miku wears that are themed around every pokemon tyoe. I know you wanna take a break from pokemon but the outfits in them are soo gorgeous, i’d love to see your take in them.
I’m glad you went with the BW2 look for ghetsis because it does feel more… cohesive? with the sequel Team Plasma uniform Though i do wish you touched upon his look in the original games with the bizarre castle shawl-topper-thing
@@XDF i feel that it's supposed to be like ritual garb of some kind but i feel like something more distinctly Catholic would've gotten the point across better that The Castle Shawl, especially given Team Plasma's original knightly aesthetic Though i presume the designers didn't want to have any egregious real-world religious allegory in the design causing some overseas controversy a la the 90's
@@hambor12 yeah the original design very much resembles the look of Japanese cult garb seen in pop culture, much of which has been influenced by real-life cults.
One of my favorite details; the reason Gladion’s outfit is completely tore up isn’t for style purposes (in universe anyways), but because his primary Pokémon, Type: Null, is very violent and likes to roughhouse a lot, so it ends up tearing up his clothes when he spends time with it
Something I really like about Matt's ORAS design is the way his clothes are torn and the actual shirt is just hanging down because it can't stay on his torso. It does a pretty good job of showing how *big* and dangerous he is. It's one thing to just have a big, buff shirtless guy, it's another for him to be shirtless because he ended up tearing an outfit even though it was presumably designed to fit him. Also I just think it's funny that the sides of his top half are hanging off of the rest of the outfit because he can't wear it. It's not really a fashion thing but I love it
I thought it was a “gym bro” fashion choice because back in the 2010s, it was a trend to rip up your tshirts and hoodies for the gym. Tank tops that were stretched until they were basically a strip of fabric connecting the neckline and bottom hem were pretty common because they exaggerated the upper body muscles and made torsos look wider. Matt is wearing a full body wetsuit that he could have customized in a way to bring attention to his upper body.
The way your mic cracks a bit when you get excited is AH so cute! I didn't know that I needed a fashion analysis of Pokemon villains today but I'm so glad you were on my feed.
Its actually funny bc the team skull costume was the most populair "pokemon bad guy" cosplay at cons for a while! Because the group consists mostly of teens with suggested student debts and who did not conform to tradition, a lot felt a connection. And could act goofy while cosplaying.
Man, I'm not really interested in fashion as a whole, and just started watching your channel out of my interest for Character Design. Your videos are just so much fun to watch. Hearing the opinions of a fashion expert for character designs it's just so insightful. I would LOVE a video of you talking about the characters of Zenless Zone Zero... since it's a game that prioritizes its character design and their expresions and personality through their clothes. Keep going, man, you awesome.
My favorite outfit worn by an antagonist in a Pokemon game would have to be Volo's Sinnoh Outfit (hairstyle included), mostly because of the amount of "drip" the outfit has, as the young folks say nowadays, and because I'm an Arceus fan-boy.
Whenever you get back to these, I'd love to see you cover unova's gym leaders sometime. I mean, the electric gym's elesa is model - her black/white 2's gym is literally a runway with a club remix of the gym theme lol. So it's basically a mandatory fashion visit.
Team Skull being comprised of trainers who were abandoned by their professors when they failed the gym challenge (I know it's not a gym challenge in Alola but still) is pretty interesting, but they didn't build on that basis at all to make it have more impact.
personally, i never thought Mars' dress was going for a rings of saturn look, but rather a UFO! i think that works well for a mars theme, since martians are a commonly imagined/theorized alien (as opposed to, like, neptunians or something lol)
I would never had expected Team Flare to be so high, since in the fandom they are often mocked for being ridiculous and over the top. This video definitely gave me a new appreciation for them.
Not much of a fashion person myself but I really love these videos talking about it in games and anime, you really show a love and passion for design and fashion. It also makes me curious if you've seen anything from the games TWEWY and Neo:TWEWY, fashion plays a small role in the games and the character's outfits are really interesting.
14:38 was just thinking the same thing, I think it’s cuz the admin’s clothes seem to be made out of diving suit material instead of traditional fabric which I love
OMG !!! i'm a fashion student who grew up playing pokemon, and ultimately just a giant video game nerd in general. being a gamer is so looked down upon in my school, so seeing this video pop up in my recommendations made my entire day. my two world's are colliding when i look at your content and it makes me so happy. instantly subscribing, i'm so excited to see what game franchise you'll cover next !! thank you so so much !!
I love Rocket the most… it’s simple and conveys what they are… a dark crime business The grunts are nobodies but you understand they’re evil But Giovanni exudes and air of power, menace, competence, but also a simple understandable goal of attaining power
The fact that Team Skull has clean clothes, much less a uniform is a miracle. They're a bunch of unemployed teenagers that have a dilapidated house for a base. I wouldn't be suprised if Guzma chose to name them Team Skull because he came across a shipping container of skull hats and has no money to buy other uniforms.
I never realized until this video, but I love how Giacomo’s outfit incorporates so many aesthetic references to music, given he’s a dj. Like even his pockets have a clip or something that makes them look like a pitch control! Such a cool design.
Legit didn't notice Maxie is wearing shorts until you mention about the possible pants over the boots, which probably is a testament on how great the overall outfit looks as those shorts doesn't look out of place.
Just discovered your channel and binged most of your videos. I really like the way you go about analyzing outfits, especially as somebody who doesn't know anything about it lol. I'd love to hear you talk about Splatoon's fashion one day. Dunno if you know anything about the game, there's not that many characters compared to Pokemon or other games you've covered, but each idol has a few outfits and the fashion in game usually takes inspiration from real-life brands and designers which would be interesting to hear about from somebody who actually knows their stuff. Maybe you could talk about your opinion on the different in-game brands. I'm just spitballing here, but still I look forward to any future videos of yours!!
magma is definitely my favorite team, i loved playing Ruby as a kid, and playing the new game with the updated outfits was very exciting. i like the texture in their outfits and i agree that the admins all look really nice. i feel like maxie's shorts look a little silly on him considering his official sort of personality, but it did let them give him more of that textured fabric in his design to break up the more flat lighter red. courtney is absolutely my favorite, i love her crazy jacket. i also totally agree that the aether foundation has arguably the best outfits in the series- its just SO fresh. i love the white with gold accents and i love a jumpsuit. the grunt outfits look so nice, its kind of a little astronaut esc to me? found this video on my front page and instantly clicked. LOVE it! definitely subscribed
Hi X, just wanted to say I've really been enjoying your content as of late, I love how clearly excited and passionate you are about fashion, it really comes through with your energy and makes the videos very pleasant to watch! :3 You've probably been asked about it to death already, but I wanted to recommend the two manga/anime Nana and Paradise Kiss. Not sure if they'd make good videos or how easy it would be to find images of the characters' fashion online, but there's definitely interesting looks in both works. Anyway, keep up the good work!
I am literally drawing Pokemon Gym Trainers and villains in new fashion outfits for fun right now, this is the perfect video and perfect series for me! Thank you so much for this, it's amazing.
I love your fashion analysis and can't wait to watch more of your videos! I love learning about fashion and style, especially stuff that's outside the box, and games and comics are great for that!
I appreciate you watching. Awesome that there are some things to learn from the vids - and you're right, this type of fictional media is perfect for review
Of course Aether Foundation wins no. 1. Honestly before Ultra Sun/Moon ruined her as a villain, I liked the whole deal of her looking presentable to the world, hiding how horrible and ugly she is on the inside. Like the twist where they reveal how horrible she is as a person and a mother made her one of the best villains. In the anime she's not a villain at all, but they did make her character toxic as hell. She's absorbed into her work and neglects her kids, but she does see them from time to time and when she does, she love bombs the hell out of them and it's played off as a cute joke because she's way more animated to the point of being an obnoxious immature parent letting her butler take care of her kids.
I really don't get how the Ultra games ruin her as a villain. At most they just give us time for her to redeem herself instead of just be taken out of the story, so anyone's sense of her continuing to be an unforgiven villain is just down to her... not being in the story after fighting her. I think it's a missed opportunity to not fight her Mother Beast form, but I don't think it's the character assassination that so many people make it out to be.
@@mastermarkus5307 I agree with you, the USUM games did a good job with Lusamine as a character, they tell us the other side of the story; Lusamine was crazy even without Nihilego because she still lost Mohn there thanks to the ultra wormholes (in fact, Lusamine hates the ultra beasts in those games and it makes sense because she now blames them for the disappearance of her husband, that's why she wants to stop Necrozma alone there, to her, it's a personal revenge), she still became a shell of her former self and froze pokémon because the point that started her madness was losing Mohn in the games, she lost probably forever part of her sanity thanks to that tragic event and Nihilego only made that worse in Sun and Moon, that's what the USUM games tell us but the fandom ignores it for some reason.
@Rocky-brilliant I do think it's also really bizarre how many people who don't like the Ultra games seemingly ignore that she was getting poisoned by Nihilego, and that was part of why she was becoming unhinged. And they accuse the Ultra games of ruining her character by making her less of a villain? How is her basically getting drugged up by a monster not removing significantly more of her villain autonomy?
@@mastermarkus5307 Agreed, people also forget that Lusamine wasn't truly a villain after all (Lillie confirmed in the games that Lusamine was a good, sweet and caring person before the tragedy of her husband took place, Nihilego is the true villain if you ask me), she was a tragic antagonist and did bad things following a twisted logic because to her, life lost it's spark the moment she lost the love of her life and the father of her kids, naturally, she wasn't gonna be a happy woman after that sad incident, it doesn't justify her actions of course, but it makes sense why she was the way she was and the USUM games show that.
team star is so great. a team of disaffected youths, victims, all coming together to protect one another, ultimately having to be brought down from within all for their own good… man. every one of the leaders plays their role. giacomo makes the music, atticus did the outfits, ortega built the vehicles (a surprise from a rich shrimp), mela got everything running, and eri trained the pokemon. and the unassuming penny from the shadows… also, on the topic of Ghetsis: i love the transition of his outfit between Black and Black 2. in Black it’s regal, gold, but still the cloak is full of eyes, it’s much more colourful… but then by 2, two years on, he’s reduced to a husk - the facade of goodness has long since fallen away, leaving him cloaked in the blacks and browns - and the eyes become more noticeable. also worth noting is that, in both scenarios, it’s his left hand extended from the cloak.
Algorithm led me to this video. Loved your analysis! I'll definitely check your other stuff out! Also, I never really appreciated Team Flare's style until you brought it up. I couldn't even remember what Lysandre looked like and by the time you got to him I had the same reaction you did. You have a great way of conveying what works (or doesn't) for you
Won't lie...I always thought Mars' Dress was meant to look like the old idea of what "Martian" spaceships would look like xD like that half dome with the weird rim and then a flat bottom that the landing gear would come out of
Wow, what a fun video. I adore your energy throughout, especially the moments where you get really excited about the outfit you're talking about. Personally I would probably put Aether at the top for grunts, and maybe the Star at the top for admins, so I vibe with your ranking a lot. Mela's outfit is just insane, and while I think I was overwhelmed by it at first, I appreciate the loudness of it more now. But my favourite admin outfit is probably B2W2 Ghetsis. Looking at your channel, you have a bunch of videos I can't wait to watch. Based on the thumbnails I love the outfits you choose for each one too. Your outfit in this video is fire, never would cross my mind to wear something like it but now I'm brewing some ideas.
There were multiple parts of this video where I was having such a great time I would go try and like the video without remembering I already had. I. CANNOT. LIKE. THIS. VIDEO. ENOUGH. TIMES.
Oh I am so excited to find this video! I'm planning on making my own pokemon villian OCs and your analysis of what makes these outfits work or not is really helpful. The other comments on this video are also helpful for bringing in some of the lore context from the games in the design elements so its also been great reading those. This is the first video of yours I've seen but i am definitely going to be watching more!
This video really helped me appreciate Team Flair so much more. They were always in my bottom three teams, for how stupid their motivations were. Lysander's deal was that he wanted to use an antient superweapon to blow up the earth because he thought people didn't care about fashion enough and were too ugly to live. But watching this helped me realize how fire (pun intended) their fashion sense actually was.
That white presumably G-Shock over that thick black bracelet (? I'm not fashion forward) is such an incredible detail, glad to know right off the bat you could teach me a thing or two.
I've always been a fan of Mela's outfit, and I think my favorite element is her choker (tbh it's giving collar?) and belt. The uniforms for the academy vary between Scarlet and Violet, and in addition to that changing what outfits the player has access to, it also changes the outfits of most students (save Penny who cares not for the dress code, apparently). In Violet, Mela's choker and belt are purple, which I don't like quite so much as a color choice, but it reveals that these pieces are composed of the school uniform neckties, which I absolutely adore. Putting a tie around your waist as a belt is such a fun rebellious element, and the choker says a little "you told me to wear it around my neck so I'll wear it around my neck ;P". Absolutely love that little bit of style storytelling. Love this video by the way, and with your video on JoJo stands showing up next to this one I think I might stick around!
I feel like Galactic deserves a bit more credit. Yes they look a bit flat, especially Saturn and Charon, but the commitment to the weird alien/sci fi bit is admirable. Plus, some elements were a bit overlooked I believe, like the big round collars on the Grunts’ uniforms, or even the haircuts. The teal bowl cuts is such an insane choice, and to impose it on everyone shows how brainwashed these Grunts are compared to other teams. Plus it complements the yellow logo very well. I’m also fairly sure some things were changed after the characters were designed, because the Commander’s haircuts loosely fit some other Commander’s ace Pokémon (Mars’s hair looks like Toxicroak’s head, Saturn like Mars’s Purrugly).
I really like N’s look just because of how simple and modern he is. He’s very casual and looks more like an actual person, which I think is very fitting to him as a character. Black/white has always been my favorite game so I may be biased lol. I just think N’s aesthetic being so much more modern and dressed-down really sets him apart and makes him come across as much more genuine. I think it matches very well to set him apart from team plasma and key in the player that he’s got more going on. Team plasma as a whole feels very costumey with their over-the-top medieval knight theme, you get the vibe right away that they aren’t genuine, but you don’t get that with N, because he dresses like an actual person! It works so well and when I first played Pokémon black I was genuinely surprised to find out his connection to team plasma, because he does care! And doesn’t need a big show to convince anyone of it.
I never gave Team Flare enough credit, I take back all of my slander directed towards them, they fuckin serve and all of their female admins have some peak design. Shout to Petrel from Team Rocket too. It's been years since I've played Soulsilver, but damn that teal, the black, red, yellow, and white looks so good. I never forgot that design, and I now see why. 11 year old me had good taste in admin fashion. Love the inverse stuff too, that's what I'd do if I were behind designing an evil team. It immediately makes them stand out and LOOK important because of how different it is and will signify their importance without a single line of dialogue. I've always loved how N's outfit makes him look like a pokemon protagonist. It's so casual and fun.
As someone who is pretty much a t shirt and pants guy this was a super interesting vid to watch! Looking at your channel I see a lot of other video game topics, so I definitely had to follow :D
I love how Lysandre's outfit manages to communicate his Pyroar's lion mane with material and shape alone. You have his hair, a fur collar and a cravat, and those create the lion mane without breaking his outfit. Pokemon has some real good trainer designs!
The designs also make sense in context. The Team Flare region is based on France and they give their all in terms of fashion. Team Plasma meanwhile are located in a region based on the US East Coast. But it's not NYC street style, they are, effectively, middle class kids larping as noble knights. That's the first design at least. The black one went full (child friendly) domestic terrorist.
I am falling in love witht this channel, and i don't even like fashion or something similar, i just love your passion and how you breakdown outfits haaaaaaaa
Wait actually when you pointed out how much white Piers uses it clicked in my head that it was probably used to further convey that despite being seen as the leader of Team Yell, the dude is actually pretty chill and just told his subordinates to support his little sister in her gym challenge. Team Yell were the ones going overboard, Piers was just rocking out in his gym wondering why no one was challenging him (Team Yell closed off the city to prevent other trains from progressing). Plus the fact that he’s a Dark-type specialist, the type associated with Black and referred to as the Evil type in Japanese; I would theorize the white is meant to show that he’s a lot more “pure/innocent” than what we would expect. Fun Fact: Piers is also the first Dark-type Gym Leader in the main games. Previous games had either Elite 4 members or villains be Dark-type specialists but never gym leaders.
I don't know the first thing about fashion (I almost exclusively wear Basketball shorts and plain Ts lol). But it is definitely nice seeing someone talk about stuff I like from a very different perspective.
Matt also has part of what probably used to be his vest hanging from his belt thing (they kind of look like ropes!) I guess it shows that he was so buff his shirt fell apart??? Lol??? Kind of reminds me of Bruno in fire emblem heroes where he just becomes shirtless when damaged 😭 (and it’s pretty clear he ripped it off himself??? For some reason? They’re usually quite tame in their damage sprites with some dirt and small ripped parts, but every single one of Bruno’s hurt sprite is him ripping his shirt off????)
Honestly, when looking at a Fashion perspective and setting aside the bias of how much someone enjoys the characters, I think all of your critiques were on point. The only thing I have beef with is your critique of the horns on Team Magma's outfits. Those are like, my favorite part lol. No hate, amazing job, loved the video!
Team Skull motivation isnt about losing a competition but more of a group that could not fit with alolan tradition and got shun away so they band together to do petty crime as a f* you. It's also visible with the punk trainer class npc in the game that are for most of them stand up people that got put the label on them.
Thanks for a bit more insight. The wiki says they failed the island challenge (which sounds like a competition?) - but yeah, not everyone agrees with cultural rites of passage traditions.
@@XDFthe island challenge is moreso like a rite of passage for alolan trainers. its basically like they flunked out of trainer college and are stuck as delinquents
@@XDFThe Island Challenge is Alola's take on the Gym Challenge and is a major tradition of the region. Guzma's story is all about the lack of belonging and so he put together Team Skull to give a home to other people that don't fit in with Alola and its rigid ancient traditions. They're mainly a family of misfits that do crime as a statement against the region that failed them. That's why their fashion is so different from the styles that we see worn by the trial captains and Kahunas.
