Such amazing Poke-memories! I grew up as a kid during the pokemania of the 90's and a lot of these tales of word-of-mouth myths and secrets as well as the toys and books totally brought me back. Such a nostalgia blast! Thank you!
You're welcome! Oh yeah so many memories! I know there were a few of the word of mouth rumors I forgot to mention, then I remember them and want to make a sequel video of this to include some of the stuff I forgot about and continue with what it was like to be a Pokemon fan in the 2000s but I just haven't yet...but I hope to someday. But Pokemon in the 90s was such a magical experience that is so hard to describe to younger generations, it was so much a "you had to be there" type thing. Thanks for watching!
My parents didn’t dig too much into the Satanic side of Pokémon but my mom was very concerned about the violence side of things. I had to do a lot of convincing that the Pokémon don’t die, they only faint and that made he’s feel much better that these creatures weren’t fighting to the death. So after that, things really loosened on the Pokémon stuff. Now Harry Potter, that was forbidden for being Satanic. Thanks for watching!
@@cboyslim5490 Yeah it wasn’t until years later, like after I graduated high school maybe even college when I was talking to my mom one day and she said, “maybe it’s not as bad as we made it out to be”. Although I’ve still not read the books or seen any of the movies. Maybe some day I’ll get around to it
See I never understood the satanic stuff. My parents are super Catholic but saw it nothing more as monsters fighting other monsters. Maybe it's cause our church didn't talk about it other than "don't let your kids play Pokemon during mass"
I miss those few years, 98-2001. Pokémon was LIFE back then. I was 8 in 1998 when pokemon hit the US. I don’t remember how I heard about Pokémon, but I had my mom bring me to ebgames. Grew up in Nj. I got blue version, and the rest was history. I loved everything Pokémon.
Was it a case of you went to EBGames and saw Blue version, thought it looked interesting, or did you know about it somehow and recognized it? Yeah Pokémon was LIFE back then for sure!
@@AngryMonkeyGamesI’m going to say I had heard about it before I had gone to the game store and got blue version. It had to have been from a friend. Do you still collect the vintage cards?
@@RolandKoller90 I might pick up a new pack or deck every now and then but I’m not as hardcore into the card games as other people are or as much as I’d like to be. I’m more on the casual side of card collecting. I might’ve been more into card collecting and building decks if I didn’t have a friend steal some of my good cards. I remember him stealing my Ancient Mew, Mewtwo, Moltres, and a few other good cards too.
The crazy thing is the more I think back I can’t recall exactly how I heard or saw Pokémon first. I was 8 in 98, I feel like I saw the anime first while the game released. Got Red for Christmas 98 and so did most of my friends. That whole winter break was spent talking, playing, trading etc it felt like it came out of nowhere. It lasted until about 2000/2001 when many kids aged out and younger kids discovered it. After Gold/Silver and the 1st movie it felt like the mania died down and settled into being an IP that would become timeless but that first 1-2 years in America, the world at the end of the 90s was crazy. I was just the right age, the playground at school was full of talk of the games, the show, the cards they banned all of it. The rumors of Mew, the glitches, trading to get other Pokémon, rumors of pokegods, rumors of gold silver, the Burger King toys, the movie MAN. What a time
This video was definitely me putting EVERYTHING into it. I remember I took notes of everything I wanted to make sure I covered, and then typed up my script, then from my script put in bold every picture or image I wanted to include, then put those bold words into a list, and separated images and video as two separate lists. Record as much as I can on my own and pull from other RU-vidrs the stuff I couldn’t. I worked on it the week of July 4th and took that week off from work and used my time off to record and edit the video. I remember I recorded it on Monday the 4th and then Tuesday and Wednesday I probably put in 8-10 hours each day editing and still had some “fine tuning” to do Thursday before my first import. Basically…it took a LONG time to make but I’m so happy with how it turned out. It was hard work but so fun to do!
Great mix of facts and your own experience, would love to see more pokemon content in the future! Thank you for sharing some of your old toys, so cool to see some that I'd never seen before
Thank you for watching, glad you enjoyed the video! I might do a follow up video but it’ll be a while. This one while fun to make, took a long time to make.
@@darkraitoast5529 Thanks for watching! Yeah Pokémon was probably the #1 thing that defined my childhood and have so many great memories with it. And the crazy thing is, I probably still have more memories to share and more toys and merch I forgot to show off too. Yeah that’s how big of an impact Pokémon had on me and my childhood! Again thanks for watching!
This is a great video. I love when people break down the toys, tv promos, cards ect... People will never know Pokemon ruled the school yard from 1998-2004.
@@LFFunEmporium Thanks for watching! Yeah this was a magical era that I was so happy to experience and I’ve never experienced anything like this since. I hope to someday do a follow up going through the dark era and the revival and maybe touch on a few other things that I missed too. I had so much I wanted to talk about that even in an hour and a half, didn’t cover everything I wanted to cover or I guess things I forgot to include. And of course show off toys and promos from after 2002 as well.
@@LFFunEmporium I know one of the things I wanted to mention was Orange Islands and talk about Ash going to the Johto Region as well. I know I mentioned the movies but would be cool to mention the anime as well. If I do a part 2, I’ll be sure to mention those!
@@LFFunEmporium Oh yeah she was an amazing voice actress. I had no idea she was both Misty and Jessie and I know people poke fun at a lot of 4Kids dubs (like how bad their One Piece dub was) but the acting was legitimately good in Pokémon! Rachael did an amazing job and she will definitely be missed!
@@Joseph-vw9rv Ha my drawings are hard to beat when it comes to bad! I’ve definitely improved since then though, even if I’m still not great. Thanks for watching!
@@shewolfcub3 I still enjoy Gen 7-9 but I agree there’s something missing, some kind of old charm that we just don’t have anymore. Like Gen 1-5 had, and I feel it started to diminish in Gen 6 (like it was still there but not as much) but yeah it became really noticeable each generation after that. Thanks for watching!
2002-07 was difficult. I was at the point in my life where I was trying to be an adult if only to please my parents but trying not to give up the things that bring me joy and peace. As a fan during that time I gave up on the games, the anime, etc only watching a few of the newer films that caught my interest as I found them. I’m 31 now and slowly getting back into Pokémon but I’m sad I missed so much in all that time worrying if I was accepted as an adult and could function in life
Sounds like you and I are about the same age. Yeah your story sounds like a common one, 2002-2007 was definitely a dark time to be a Pokemon fan, I got made fun of so much during 2001-02 for still liking it that 2003 and on for a while I had to pretend I grew out of it, I even played dumb when other people are like "remember Pokemon?" Just "oh yeah I remember it" and leave it at that, if they tried to remember "what was the name of that one that did this...?" "I don't know" When I clearly knew exactly what Pokemon they're talking about. A shame you felt forced to grow out of it though. Gen 3 was such a great era for Pokemon, lots of great Pokemon were introduced, the Red/Blue remakes, FireRed and LeafGreen were fantastic remakes that added so much extra content not seen in any other Pokemon games (Sevii Islands) and Emerald I still consider one of the best Pokemon games ever made. At least now, Pokemon is a lot more accepted than it was 20 years ago so it's not as awkward to hide it (though I still do out of habit). Thanks for watching my video!
@@AngryMonkeyGames absolutely no problem! Tbh I hope there is a legends spin off set in unova based on either westerns or pulp fiction (the genre of short story not the tarintino film) I think that’d be very interesting to explore in Pokémon for those outside the us and those in the us who aren’t aware of such things
I do hope to make more of these, though this did take a long time to make so it’ll be a while. Who knows maybe I’ll do a follow up and talk about Pokémon from 2003-current. I also kinda want to a retrospective of Smash Bros, and some retrospective videos on some game consoles too. Oh yeah did you see the little shoutout with Bibarel?
That would be awesome! Especially if we can play both the original and the Johto version! Or maybe even make a new one that captures the spirit of the first 2.
Lucky enough to have been there right from the start. Played every single game on or shortly after their release. My favourite generations were naturally 2 & 3. Crystal and Emerald were game-changers. I miss the old Pokémon, it’s just not the same anymore. They’ve ruined it.
Crystal and Emerald were definitely amazing! I still say that Emerald is one of the best Pokémon games ever made. I still feel Pokémon had magic for a bit longer. With Gen 5 being the last truly great Gen. Around Gen 6 is when I started to feel it start to go down a bit. And while I still enjoyed Scarlet and Violet, it’s so buggy, felt rushed, and just doesn’t have the magic the older games have. Thanks for watching!
I just don't think kids these days realize how big pokemon was- adults were talking about it, the news was talking about it, there was merchandise in every single building you went into, all over TV, the playground, the bus, the churches were talking about it- like Pokemon took over the world in those early years. My husband is 6 years older than me so he wasn't into pokemon as a kid but I always tell him, anyone my age has memories of pokemon- idc who they are. I have a bunch of Cubones in my office at work solely as a conversation starter. Lol
@@ldmassey Yeah Pokémon was EVERYWHERE back then, and I mean I feel like it is even more so now since video games, Pokémon, anime, and all that are so mainstream that even grandmas know who Mario and Pikachu are. But even still something about that era of 1998-2001 was special. Maybe because it was the start of the phenomenon and “new=exciting” might have something to do with it whereas now we take it for granted, not sure. But man that era of being a kid, that era of Pokémon was special and such a fun time to experience! Thanks for watching! I love the Cubones on your desk, that’s awesome! I have a Gengar stress toy on mine!
I had that Master board game, I remember playing it with a friend and they were so salty at getting screwed on a trade that they swiped the thing off the table and quit lmao. Can't say I blame em. Also damn, I hope you know you got a crazy deal on that N64, even for the time.
@@dyrr836 ha! I would probably be that friend too, rage quitting because you stole my Moltres or something! Yeah video games were cheap back then, that was before the interest in retro games skyrocketed so you can get a lot of crazy deals on stuff back then! Good times. Thanks for watching!
I was lucky enough to be 8 when red/blue came out. Holy moly there was something magical about those first three gens. The art style, the 90's/00's feel to all the media... I think it was an objectively better time. PS my parents are fundamentalist Christians but were smart enough to realize Pokemon wasn't satanic. Shout out mom!
Oh yeah there was definitely something magical there! The first generation was so special, the newness of the whole thing, the adventure, the discovering of these creatures, the secrets, the myths and rumors, all of it! It was such a great time, and a simpler time. I'm surprised my mom didn't press to hard on the "Satanic" rumors of Pokemon. She did on other things at the time like Harry Potter but fortunately not with Pokemon, she was more concerned about the violence until I assured her the Pokemon only faint, they don't die.
I started Pokemon at the end of Gen 3, where Diamond & Pearl were just around the corner. I had memories of my Sister bringing Pokemon to me prior with a Gameboy and a whole bunch of figurines and toys from her growing up through the 90's, but I didn't know it was called Pokemon. When I was in middle school (like grade 4-ish) Pokemon cards got really popular and I managed to collect a bunch. Without ever knowing about RSE I learned most if not all of the Pokedex up to that point just by collecting the cards! I eventually got Pokemon Diamond as my first ever game in 2006 but I was so hooked on it I never played another game ever again. I destroyed the boundaries of that game with an Action Replay and just when on a rampage across the region. No memory will ever hold up to that for me!
I had so much fun with an Action Replay back during Diamond and Pearl! I still have it. Run through walls so that way I didn't have to have Cut, Rock Smash, Rock Climb, or Strength, or the guarantee encounter whatever Pokemon you want which was great for experimenting with EV training stuff. So many fun memories with the Action Replay. So question, being in 4th grade in the mid 2000s when my generation saw Pokemon as babyish, did your generation see it that way or was Pokemon still very popular or was it seen as a fad on its way out? Because for me, Gen 3 was very unpopular with the kids my age back when I was 11-12, seen as childish and uncool. But by the time Gen 4 came out, I was in high school and seemed to be way more popular than Gen 3 with the kids my age.
@@AngryMonkeyGames The way I see it, Pokemon never lost its luster. But being a fan after Gen 3 I do see what you mean. Pokemania wasn't as strong after Gold & Silver, even my Sister fell out of Pokemon at the same time I got in to it. Pokemon was so overdone at that point nobody cared how childish the game was. Everyone just complained about the 8 Gym structure and the same old mechanics like every other Pokemon game. If anything, it was less about being a kid and more like "Why are you still playing those outdated unfinished games". I didn't see what they meant until 2 generations later when I realized: Pokemon just doesn't learn.
@@pokefriend123 I didn't mind the 8 gym structure and all that but I know around Gen 3 is when people started complaining about Pokemon, like we already have Krabby why do we need Corphish? We already have Butterfree why do we need Beautifly? Which now I know the reason why Gen 3 had so many new Pokemon is because they planned on starting fresh (kinda like what they actually did with Gen 5) so that's why we saw some "repeats". But yeah a lot of kids grew out of Pokemon around that time. And that is interesting for the younger crowd to see Pokemon as outdated vs my generation thought it was childish just because they played it as a kid so it's uncool to like the stuff kids like. That's how Disney was for kids around that same era, Disney was seen as for babies and little kids. I was guilty of that one for a while.
@@AngryMonkeyGames I always thought Pokemon was cool. I mean yeah the game mechanics are a little dated but they always have something for everyone in these games. I fell in love with Pokemon for the relationship, if other people didn't like Pokemon I just said they didn't know enough about them. Pokemon could use a remaster, I think the Legends series is going to fix that for most of them. As long as they keep making Pokemon, they will be someone's favourite!
@@pokefriend123 I always enjoyed seeing all the new unique creatures and the adventure that a whole new region and game gives. Plus I understood it well enough that I can actually relax and play that, something I can't say for any other video game where you have to time your jumps or your attacks. You just walk around and explore a new area and that's just fun to me. And then when I got older and seeing how everyone has their own unique play styles, some brute force it, some implement weather conditions. But I can't remember why I liked it so much as a kid. I mean yeah, everyone liked it so you like it too so you can fit in with the other kids but something definitely kept me there and drew me back in with every new Pokemon thing that got released. Maybe it was the relationship/community aspect of it. Everyone liked it so I was able to walk up to any kid at recess and talk Pokemon and we had that thing in common and I make a new friend, maybe that's why. All I know is there is something magical with these creatures and the phenomenon wasn't like anything I had ever seen before.
“There’s no wrong answer” Except Charmander, because of the first two gyms, but especially the first one, as you will not find anything that is advantageous against Brok’s pokemon.
@@Hynotama True Charmander is weak to the first couple gyms, it’s kinda like playing the game on hard mode but what I meant is, they’re all strong. I mean, Charizard is a pretty strong Pokémon, he doesn’t get as many opportunities to shine in a Kanto run thanks to the type matchups but he’s still a very powerful Pokémon to have as a starter. That’s more what I mean.
@@Phantasmlovecraft A sad day in the Pokémon community. Rachael Lillis played a huge part of my childhood voicing Misty and Jessie both. She was so talented and left us too soon. She will be missed
Yeah I remember seeing those in Target back in the day, I never got it though. It was totally insane bc we had Like only 4 channels on network TV (where it aired - we still have mostly network TV culture) and everyone was deep into it and unofficial TCGs and German Language Pokémon RPGs from street merchants. those were the days. I cherish my old toys - like dozen plushies and tamagotchi Pikachu and GBC with Red and Silver (with flat battery but Red is in english not from Vietnam store) And first two films at the movies. 😊 But we didn't had Pokémon anime from season 5 (may 2002?) up until DP in dec 2009 😢 I've played all RPGs games and finished Like first 4 gen and X (XY games) - some of Them even in two editions! And only one that i didn't played yet is Pokémon Legends Arceus. Also played all Pokémon smartphone games except Smile and Sleep XD I'm back into it man! We also didn't had Pokémon food and Cosplay back in the days (but when Harry Potter overtook Pokémon they sold something HP) but nowadays it's heaven (smile). ❤
@@jarekmars8141 Oh yeah I had the Tamagotchi Pikachu too! I remember I got it for Christmas in 2000 I think, and I had it in a drawer for a year, remembered I had it, pulled it out, and the Pikachu was mad at me, wouldn't even look at me so I gave it away or sold it because I didn't know how to make him like me again. I didn't get rid of too many Pokemon toys, I got rid of a few but I have MOST of my Pokemon merch from back then. That's amazing how you guys seemed to be just as in to as America was! It truly was quite the phenomenon back in the day! And it's amazing how Pokemon Go kinda revived it. The 2000s was concerning to be a Pokemon fan, that was such a dark time to play Pokemon or be a fan but it got kinda revived in the late 2000s thanks to the online community and competitive battling scene (which was always there) REALLY took off thanks to the online capabilities. You missed out some of the best years of Pokemon anime honestly to miss out on 2002-2009. That's the entire "Advanced" era where Ash was in the Hoenn region and then DP started in 2007 and that was also some of the best years of the anime too. I kinda stopped watching around season 15 or 16 (2013 I think) not by choice it just kinda happened but I'd love to get back into it and see what Ash's adventures were like after that and see him finally become champion. I hear that was quite the battle and story arc! Also I do recommend Pokemon Legends Arceus, that is a great game, and such a fresh take on the series too. Thanks for watching!
@@AngryMonkeyGamesAlso we played real world game Pokémon (Like peek-a-boo real world game) Like two trainers and two Pokémon were played by Real people and pretending to use moves XD
@@AngryMonkeyGames I think Gen 6 bumped the character limit to 12, so if you take out the space, you could totally pick up a Squirtle from Professor Sycamore and name it WalterSquity. Or, if you want the space in there, you can pull a Feraligatr and call him Waltr Squity.
as someon who plays gen 1 competitively, I'm curious what balancing issues you're talking about with the dragon type in this gen, because frankly Dragonite would kill to not be Dragon type in this gen. The only dragon move is dragon rage, so the fact that nothing resists it isn't worth anything, and ice is extremely good, with gen 1 blizzard being 90 accuracy and freeze being functionally a 1 hit ko (you only thaw out if you get hit by a fire move). Realistically almost every pokemon that learns it runs Blizzard, even primarily physical attackers like the #1 in OU, Tauros. None of the types dragon resists except electric are particularly common either (even Starmie rarely actually runs Surf, it has better things to be doing). So Dragonite gets basically nothing out of the Dragon type except a 4x weakness to a type you will realistically see on half of every team.
another note, Missingno's moves are 2 water guns and 1 sky attack, instead of vice versa. This doesn't really matter but it does kind of rub me the wrong way that you didn't bother to check when you were clearly not completely sure. The thing about Missingno giving you all the badges is also untrue. It does give you 128 of the 6th item in your bag, which is what most people use it for so I assume that's what you were thinking of.
@@bewill5121 Thanks for watching and thanks for those corrections. And I don’t know how I forgot about the sixth item slot giving you all those extra items. I even did that myself with Rare Candies back in the day.
