Blastoise should have gotten steel type in the switch to gen 2. I think it fits quite well with the cannons, and it would make it so the three Kanto starters become dual types. I don't think it would have make it broken, ut it would have been much more interesting and I'm sure it would have retained viability at least over a couple generations.

Statwise, blastoise is very similar to Meganium which is an even more unfortunate starter who also has a mediocre hidden ability. As I am unsure on gamefreak being willing to do a stat buff for starter Pokémon, I feel like the best chance for blastoise to become useable in the modern day are to either hope to achieve a regional variant which made samurott go from worst water starter to one of the greatest thanks to hisui, or a lot of movepool buffs (like water pulse being 80 bp before a mega launcher boost) and reclaiming that mega launcher ability to make its measly special attack stat look threatening with the ability boost and shell smash. Nidoking is a mon with a subpar special attack stat but its ability sheer force makes it look like a demon, so an ability change for blastoise should hopefully make it feign that power level as well

At least in Nat Dex Mega Blastoise is bonkers because it can combine shell smash with its greatly improved power, and as a result it's banned from Nat Dex OU.

Mirror Venasaur's Clorophyl by giving Blastoise Swift swim, and then give it a unique attack to make the back mounted cannons make some sense

A tiny buff that would feel perfectly reasonable and actually benefit not just Blastoise would be to give Withdraw the Refresh effect of healing negative status as well as the 1 stage Defense boost, I think. Like... it's an iconic move from Gen 1 which doesn't have a wide distribution. Why not make it feel a bit more unique than just a Water type Harden? At first I was thinking it could recover some HP instead, but then I remembered how hard Game Freak nerfed recovery moves in Gen 9, so I figured it was a bad idea.

Bulky water type is such a common niche that unless you do something special, you get left behind. Maybe give Blastoise a signature move like a water type Torch Song that increases special attack when used. Not only does this address it's major flaw, but also plays into blastoise as a snowballing rain sweeper

Only reason Mega Blastoise is bad is because for some weird reason gamefreak didnt guve it Shell Smash It has Shell Smash in NatDex and as expected, it was banned to Ubers there

Every other Pokemon that got the broken category of g max move (max wildfire, vine lash, cannonade, and coalossols one that i forgot the name of) was good in Gen 8 expect my boy Blastoise He deserves so much better, give him wonder guard

Blastoise is the definition of "Good in a vacuum" in generation 1. "But it's bulky!" So is Vaporeon and Lapras. Starmie has powerful sustain with recover also. Dewgong even has some good bulk AND ice stab. Practically every other option just has something better to offer. Heck even omastar's rock typing gives it a normal resist. "But it can learn earthquake and blizzard to cover its weaknesses!" Starmie can learn thunderbolt and blizzard. Lapras again can also gain stab on blizzard and thunderbolt. If you still want a earthquaking water type, poliwrath has better attack. My hot take is that if it was not a starter, nobody would care about this pokemon. It's a sad fate honestly.

I think you underrated blastoise. Sure, its never been good in OU, its one of the most consistent UU pokemon of all time, a pillar of the tier from gen 2 through 5

Theres one cool lower tier niche that blastoise used to have (alingside hitmons, mainly hitmontop though), and thats being able to learn foresight (prior to move being outight removed from games). While on the surface, you may think that its not important, it actually allows for rapid spinners to spin on ghost types. One of the cooler things that blastoise used to be capable of, though losing it for shell smash is a pretty good trade i think

Every time I tell people that Blastoise is bad, they refuse to hear it. His basic water typing holds him back so much along with average stat spread.

I dont care about the competetive pokemon scene, but I have ranted about Blastoise numerous time BECAUSE he is such a failure. As someone who started Pokemon Blue with Squirtle, if only you knew how much I cried when it turned to Blastoise. Wartortle's gorgeous ears and tail, just poof. Gone. And for what? Cannons that literally came out of nowhere and was never hinted on in Squirtle of Wartortle. Blastoise is also THE ONLY pokemon with legit metal weapons in it's body. (Besides from Genesect, but Genesect didnt get it's cannon naturally) AND it's not even a steel type? Blastoise never made any sense to me.

The Blastoise Line did get some water type healing moves in recent gens.

Jimothy, I cannot believe you would forget to include Blastoise-Mega's highest catridge legal position in LGPE OU. The Turtle Council may not be happy with this exclusion (cool video as always).

I don't really mind him being slightly weak, because I've always liked Blastoise. He's neat.

Another reason why I want Squirtle to be one off the starters in legends Z-A. We need a better mega blastoise than the mega that blastoise actually got.

Blastoise is my favorite Pokémon. At least in Nat Dex, Shell Smash Mega Blastoise was so fun…then he got sent to Ubers to fight Regieleki

The biggest problem with Blastoise is that it just doesn't shine at doing anything, there will always be other Water types which will be either a better setup sweeper or bulky tank or hazard setter/remover or screen/weather/terrain setter. His base stats are underwhelming, no secondary typing means no secondary STAB, no offensive ability options for a sweeper set.... Poor Blasty shined brightest only as a Mega Shell Smash Sweeper.

How to "Fix" Blastoise. 1. Give it a secondary type like Steel. 2. Shift its stats around so it has more HP and SA. Like: -30 A, +20 HP +10 SA. 3. Give it a better secondary ability like Swift Swim, or Buff Rain Dish to be as good as Poison Heal.

Never played gen 8 or 9 but damn, they actually gave Blastoise an animation where he shoots out of his cannons

Give Blastoise a new hidden ability that works like that one walking wake move so he can be a water type that retains its functionality under Sun.

Let the record show blastoise had made a splash in gen 9 RU with various shell smash sweeping and more niche bulky spinner sets. Most popular among these was the shell smash white herb tera electric set, a staple of HO at the time it utilized tera blast to gain bolt beam coverage that ripped through the tier after chipping an ever-present cyclizar. Another notable shell smash set was the mixed set, utilizing the 100 bp ground type attack earthquake to smash specially defensive empoleon, a normally suitable counter, and many other steels looking to shut down it's sweep. The mixed set had a variety of threating tera types like ground, to boost it's earthquakes to terrifying levels, or a more defensive tera type like grass or ghost to abuse a previously offensive check, turning what should have been an easy KO into a 6-0. The oppressive nature of it's tera abusing and set variety led to it's eventual suspect and ban. Thank you for reading folks.

Blastoise shows just how criminally outdated early gen stats are.

It needed a move that did water damage and spins hazards away at the same time by using it's cannons. Something like 60 base power water physical. A personal ability to give hydro pump perfect accuracy would also make a lot of sense.

I'd give Blastoise Volcanion's signature move "Steam Eruption" if I were to buff it. It makes sense thematically too with Blastoise's huge cannons it uses.

Always found it so weird that Blastoise is known for having these water cannons that can apparently cut through steel Yet it has a base SpA stat of 85.

It either needs to be more speedy or more bulky. Being slow and unable to take a hit is a death sentence.

Water/Steel typing and Shell Armor would somewhat help and be thematically fitting? If Blastoise got that and a recovery move like Slack Off or Recover then it could do something, it always had solid defensive stats but no consistent way of recovery which always held it back a lot. Storm Drain would also be great but not sure if fits as much, Swift Swim also could at least help in Rain teams if Blastoise were to be a Shell Smash user.

Move Mega Launcher from Mega Evolution to alternate ability. Pair that with Shell Smash and you get incredible sweeper potential. Very much fits the concept of the pokemon with those cannons. Torrent as standard ability for water starters is lame anyway. (same with Blaze and Overgrow)

Origin pulse would make mega-blastoise scary just in time for ZA

As the next Pokemon Legends game is in Kalos, I think it's pretty likely' we're going to see Shell Smash Mega Blastoise outside of National Dex for the first time.

I’ve had success with Blastoise in G9 with Water spout, rapid spin, ice beam, and Flip turn with Wish support from Alomomola

It'd be cool if it received some good form of defense boosting alongside the criminally absent Shell Armor ability. This way it could at least be more unpredictable as a classic bulky water that can't be cheesed through while still keeping the offensive shell smash threat potential. A 10 point buff to it's Sp Atk would be welcome (though idk if they'd be willing to throw the starter BST equality out of whack), but sometimes all a mon needs is another dimension to be vastly more usable.

Give it Storm Drain! Or, something new where Sun doesn't derail its water attacks.

I'm still salty that Mega Blastoise didn't get Drizzle, it's fire counterpart got Drought AND Tough Claws.

I'd personally love this guy to have Drizzle - Rain Dance Blastoise is an iconic part of Early TCG meta, with his ability being able to empower all of his Water buddies. Having him serve the same role would be great. Also I want Megas back. The Shell Smash & Mega combo should be allowed. Let my Turtley Boy be OU or Ubers one time.

the funniest thing about mega launcher is that heal pulse is considered a pulse move so mega launcher boosts it. blastoise doesn't learn it but clawitzer does

If I was to buff Blastoise: 1) 5 points to Def + Sp.Def, 15-20 points to Sp.Atk 2) Get rid of Rain Dish, give it Mega Launcher instead 3) Increase how many moves get the ML buff: Beam moves like Hyper Beam or Ice Beam, but include also Hydro Pump, Hydro Cannon & Flash Cannon. Might make Blastoise one dimensional, but its better than this mediocre jack-of-all traits thing going on.

The first two gens had really generalist statlines for the starters. Blastoise was probably the second biggest victim after Meganium. Here's my simple fix. Dump a bunch of his speed into special attack. Make those cannons actually hurt. He's built to be the tank. His bulk is fine, but his offense is really underwhelming in order for him to have surprisingly middling speed for a big turtle. If his mega comes back, tweak Mega Launcher to boost Hydro Pump (but also get rid of shell smash, because that is insane). Maybe make it replace rain dish as the HA.

I think the nicest way of buffing Blastoise (and other past underperforming Starter pokémon) would be to create held objects only they could use. Letting Blastoise have an item that boosts its Special Attack by 50% and allows him to skip the recharge turn for Hydro Cannon would grant it a niche without it being super overpowered. Even with access to Shell Smash, running this item makes you unable to use White Herb to remove your Defense and Special Defense drop, turning him into a glass cannon susceptible to priority moves. Another way you could go is just give him an ability like Unaware or Magic Guard, giving his defensive profile a lot more staying power without directly giving him access to Recover, and turning him into a Scald / Roar machine to answer setup threats. Regenerator would also be a flavorful way to bolster its defensive profile (he goes inside his shell to heal up, folks!), especially considering he's slow and can use Flip Turn for slow pivoting, giving entry points to Pokémon who would otherwise not have one while keeping your turtle healthy.

I have a support Blastoise I love using in doubles. It clears when paired with a Breloom. Fake Out, Yawn, Scald, Life Dew, Impish with defense investment.

The problem with Blastoise and a lot of other Gen 1-3 mons is that they need legit buffs. This is because at the time, there was no physical special split. So you get a lot of early gen mons with awkward BST distributions and wonky movesets.

Now that it has Shell Smash, with Mega Evolution returning in the next game, Blastoise will be pretty good.

Empoleon got an ability change, so why not Blastoise? Maybe Mega Launcher. I would also love Origin Pulse on Blastoise, since its one of the Original Pokemons and Turtles being on of the oldest existing Creatures trailing almost back to the Origin of life. And Origin Puls, well, its F*CKING strong Pulse move.

Mega Blastoise was legendary in Nat Dex OU with shell smash in gen8 and was rightfully banned

My favorite time using Blastoise was in BDSP OU where the power lv was more manageable compared to Gen 9

Should’ve made Mega Blastoise Water/Steel and gave the Mega Launcher boost to Flash Cannon. Decent anti-fairy pick. Buff Water Pulse to 70 or 80 base power while we’re at it. Bubblebeam and Brine already exist and mid-game water attacks.

8:58 it's also strong in Natdex Ubers UU. It's beena while but i remember losing to a psychic spam team using terrain pulse which was like 190 power or something

There actually is another tier Blastoise us really good! Let's Go Overused isn't the most flashy or popular format, but it is the one where Blastoise has some of the greatest success its ever had due to Water typing being excellent in the tier.

If blastoise had a signature cannon attack that was boosted by mega launcher that would have helped. Or just steel type in its mega form

Give it Mega Launcher back, buff Water Pulse to 80 base power, and make Mega Launcher work on Beam moves as well, like Ice Beam and Charge Beam. Also buff its Special Attack by at least 20.

The biggest mistake is all that speed. move 40 points into either HP or SpA and we've got something

Here's how I would improve Blastoise: it's a tortoise, right, so it's supposed to be slow, so give it Truant. Now how does that help? Well it would allow GameFreak to buff it a ton. It could get legendary-level stats, and a recovery move. And Water is a pretty good defensive type, with only two weaknesses, but normal only has 1 weakness, and it has an immunity, so swap its type for normal. And make it an ape.

Mega Blastoise was so dissapointing. That only Charizard got two Megas was just obnoxious. Mega Launcher should work with non-contact moves like a Tough Claws counterpart. It should just be a Steel type too, even the design is not very good, it should take inspiration from Wartortle.

This is the first time I have ever seen the Gen 3 Blastoise front sprite.

There’s nothing to do unless you want to fundamentally make an entire new Pokemon. Too many viable water types ahead of Blastoise that make it almost impossible to balance.

Long rant/analysis (read it if you want to or just ignore it): Rain Dish isn't a terrible ability, especially in Gen 5 OU, but it definitely did not make Blastoise any more viable except for fringe scenarios when compared to two other great Water-type spinners when it mattered the most in Gen 5. Tentacruel had vastly better speed and special bulk to boot, the former being useful if you decided to run Haze, and it even got Rapid Spin as a big F you to Blastoise. Hell, even Clear Body and Liquid Ooze could be useful in niche matchups, the latter being good against Ferrothorn since it could regain lost HP in the rain while fishing for Scald burns while only taking neutral damage from Power Whip. Starmie had less bulk but reliable recovery in Recover and Natural Cure which let it switch in on status move and Scald users. You could even run Rest and just switch out for full recovery. But it was also just really good offensively with its almost perfect coverage and decent firepower on top of very good speed (if you used it offensively it would even outrun non-Scarf Latios which was a premiere OU pokemon and threaten it with an Ice Beam). Even Analytic could be useful on a Choice Specs or Life Orb set since it works when the opponent switches out too. Even with Blastoise's mega evolution, you could argue that Clawitzer was a viable substitution for Blastoise in Gen 6 UU given that it had the same ability and moveset (although it also got U-Turn as a pivoting move). Sure, it was in RU while Mega-Blastoise was in UU, was slower and had less firepower and bulk so it often needed to use Specs to even carry itself, but you also didn't have to use a Mega Stone to get a mediocre special attacker. That slot could have been better spent on Beedrill, Ampharos, Aerodactyl, Aggron, Sharpedo, Swampert or Absol. So it's not that Clawitzer was better, it was just another reasonable option that could do much of the same without sacrificing a mega slot on your team because Blastoise is just that underwhelming by comparison.
