Old comment but if you care alot about saves in GB/GBC/GBA Games I recommend getting a cart dumper to back them up on whatever type of computer you use. I have the GBxCart that you can get at retro repair shop. I doubt what you're suggesting could work, I think this mod is just for ease of access in not needing to solder each time you replace the battery.

​@mariorivera7969 Having a device to dump saves is great. Have a clone console that will dump saves. You can also store multiple different saves as savestates. Very convenient for something like this and then reinstalling the save file onto the cart with the new battery in place.

get a card dumper to back up your stuff, comes a long way instead of fiddleing with shit like this and potentally losing ur save

As many have said yes a cart dumper is the safe, modern, convenient, way to save a save, however some of us just like futzing around

There might be a space issue, what you can do is take some Play-Doh or blue tack or something and put it on the battery spot with the battery out and then close the case like normal, you can then measure the clay to see what dimensions your battery holder can be I would suggest getting on a place like digi key to get battery holders because they're the same thing you get off of handheld legends but they're tens of cents a piece so you can grab some extra and screw around... Maybe grab a guinea pig cartridge to futz with Go wild basically if it's getting threeish volts across the contacts it doesn't care where it comes from

It's a simple plug in Weller that isn't adjustable, but 650F is decent for leaded solder

To a purest maybe theoretically yes but I don't find much value to a game that doesn't work properly it's like tires on cars after a while you probably just replace them some things are consumable

At the end of the day, value is always in the eye of the consumer. Some people will want a CIB never opened videogame to display on a shelf for originality's sake. Most consumers are however buying these games with the intent of playing them. I think it's safe to say that an RPG that cannot save, holds little practical value in the eyes of gamers. When you sell these old games, for transparency's sake, it's smart to always inform the buyer that you have replaced the battery and show pictures of the board in it's current state.

Whether or not the battery is still working, they do end up draining faster on Gen 2 because the battery pulls double duty: It powers the internal game clock and powers storage for the save file. The same battery should always last longer in RBY than GSC.

It's flux-core solder and I used a solder braid to remove the old solder from the pads, and for all intents and purposes it was an experiment to see if the holder fit

I just bought a pack of them to do a commission this weekend and when I get home from work we'll see just how bad they are... but I hear you

@@BSKustomz You won't find it out in an afternoon. The original batteries have on some occasions lasted 20 years (I have a copy of Red with the original battery). Others have lasted 10+ years. I've read countless reports of these aftermarket tabbed cells lasting anywhere from 6 months to 2 years. That's what I meant when I said they're crap.

I used the one that was available, I'll keep an eye on it and change it out if I have to

True, that CR1616 will probably be dead in 3 years.

I've been looking on Digi-key and have a few candidates to test for CR2032 holders, I think I can swap it out before 2026

@@BSKustomz be very careful with 2032 in these cartridges, they make the PCB bulge, I bought one from eBay already installed on a crystal version and the the board cracked after so many years.

I'm going to do a playdough test when I do look into 2032 holders and I'll show that here
