People can say what they want about this format, but A, I loved watching these battles in this format, and B, can we just take a moment to appreciate that Assault Vest Lightning Rod Raichu? I NEVER expected to see Raichu used like that, let alone in this crazy format!
Won't lie, played a bit of the format, hated playing it, watching it has been crazy fun though. I think what helped is the fact that DV Smeargle wasn't that popular in top teams, which was the main thing that annoyed me to begin with.

This Wolfe guy is freaking amazing! Well, they both played really good, the battle was really fun to watch! What bothers me are the people who complain about that they used legendarys. Since they both used them, there is nothing bad about that. It wasn't even exactly about the Pokemon, it was about the plays and predictions. These things make certain players so good, like these two guys. I'm sure they both would crush everyone who complains in the comments in every tier.
If vgc had more diversity of used Pokemon, then maybe I would be tempted to try it out. I think the last time there was diversity in the format was 2014. This was the first year I watched the world championships, and the great predictions made it so entertaining to watch. I will definitely check it next year. The lack of diversity of Pokemon being used kills the format for me though

I'm not sure why everyone is so against legends.. that final battle was VERY entertaining. it easily took such a high level of skill to compete here that it wouldn't matter what the format was, these final 2 competitors would steam roll anyone
They don't know enough about the game to understand any of the plays. If they're complaining about "legends", then it's obvious that they didn't even look up the rules of this year's format, and so they probably have even less of a clue on why the players made the moves that they did. If they don't understand the game, then they're not going to enjoy watching it unfortunately.
Imagine how much more hate this Worlds would have gotten if Top Cut was all Japanese players like last year; I was actually at Worlds and noticed that most Japanese players were running Big 6 variants
Yep. As someone who enjoys and understands a bit of competitive pokemon, I'm really disappointed to see the comment section drowned out by people who don't understand the format, rather than additional insights into these two games that the commentators may have missed.
Wolfey Glick is probably my favorite VGC player. Not just now that he is world champion, but when he was smaller in the scene he was known as the "King of Stall" (moreso speaking to his defensive play style and perish trapping rather than actual timer stalling). The timer was a key point in both matches, but Wolfe was always on the offensive. His plays carried an offensive presence, and that Swords Dance to clutch the victory was one of the most hype-filled moments I have ever seen in VGC. Well done Wolfe, you've earned it.

well, bringing Big 6 to Worlds wouldve been a huge risk because youd be going in with a team comp of which you know every single player has prepared some form of strategy against it, as solid of a comp as it may be, theres noone who doesnt expect to face it so youre basically starting off at a disadvantage every single game

It's funny how I totally despised the 2016 format to the point of not even trying to play it (I made a ho-oh/kyogre and a rayogre team but meh), and still the worlds tournament blew my mind, so many rogue pokemon here and there, and the master finals were amazing, one of the best sets, if not the best set (as Aaron mentions) in the story of the game.
If I was competing and my opponent didn't timer stall in a situation where that was his/her win condition, I would be quite annoyed and consider it as toying
Trust me, most of them know nothing about VGC. They just see legends and probably watched Verlisifys (idk) Videos, so everyone is a noob in this Championship. Sure.
Jwanie Way less skill than using an NU team against an Uber team and winning. Legendaries are pretty powerful, with their initially high stat and pretty nice move pool.
I don't really understand why time stalling is such a big deal for some people. That kind of thing is done ALL THE TIME in other sports. I mean, if I'm playing football and I have the lead by a few points, why would I hurry to get the game moving when I could just stall to ensure my opponent only has the minimum amount of time left so he might not win? If I was good enough to come back and take the win, then that just means I strategized and played better than my opponent. It doesn't mean I'm cheap or a coward, it means I was good enough to tip the odds in my favor.
It makes the game objectively less interesting for spectators, so of course you'll see people complaining about it. We certainly get the same sort of stalling in all kinds of sports, and fans complain about it just as much in all other arenas. No one with any sense would say it's worth disqualification, but similarly no one with any sense would argue that a "please wait" screen is more entertaining than literally anything else.
It's incredible how well Wolfe played this. He managed risk every single turn by making safer plays that kept his positioning good but also made big plays once he got a read on his opponent, truly a masterfully played game
I love how this game reflected the lore tbh. Mega Rayquaza facing off both primal weather Pokemon and overpowering them. Mega Rayquaza is power incarnate.

There was a lot of variety in VGC2016 compared to 2015. At US nationals 2016 almost everyone had Groudon Xerneas as their restricted. No one expected RayOgre to win worlds. And in 2015 if you look at the top players at worlds they all had the same first five Pokemon. Weather wars had to be played if you wanna win in 2016. I think there was plenty of variety in this meta especially considering how 2015 was.
I agree. I couldn't have asked for a much better finals this year. this year's worlds was truly the best I've ever seen. so blessed to see wolfie get his first world championship win that he's been looking for. I feel that's one of the best parts of it all. but overall. great year.

Einar Smith Fodstad agreed. he was for sure on his A-Game. he really made some key switches and was able to keep momentum in the battle. and that very HUGE sword dance in game 2 was so clutch.

why are people saying they probably hacked their pokemon? umm guys you can actually catch legendaries in the games did you know that smart ones? just because they have legendaries doesn't mean they hacked them, they caught them you dopes.
In my opinion pokemon was so much better before all these mega forms and ubers with special powerd-up forms. I mean really, any player who is interested in winning basically has to choose from such a small handful of pokemon to even stand a chance. Don't get me wrong I still love the series but when me and my friends play, we ban mythical and uber pokemon to make room for unique strategies and various pokemon usage.
The difference for me was the heavy hitters. Bronzong and Gengar are fine but you can't have a powerful Pokemon like Groudon do absolutely nothing. Wolf had his Kyogre and the Raquaza dealing a lot of damage. Johnathan needed his Groudon to go on the offensive more and not just switch around and protect itself.
I'm not a fan of "the meta" and how this one was dominated by ubers, but Wolfe deserved this win, and still it's nice to see my favorite pokemon thriving in an uber-heavy metagame Yes, I love Raichu
first of all let me just say that this match was great. not gonna lie, i enjoyed it. but the thing that makes me wonder how stupid the people at the comments are just makes me do a sigh. people please do research first before doing something. legends were allowed in that years format. and only 2 of them. a lot of dumb casual players keep crying like pathetic babies of why legends were allowed. it was part of the rules so chill and if you cant handle it then dont watch no one was forcing you to watch this vid you chose to. and it takes a lot of skill to win a battle even with legends.
Good to see that competitive Pokemon has no place for interesting strategies or variety. Just use those mega-legendaries and stall the timer.......Truly the show of the Pokemon spirit....
Actually, the matches were home of truly great plays and works of strategy (think about all those raichu switch ins, Verlisify couldn't play a match at this levels even with hackmons), also the time stalling did not matter in both, so I can't see how it's killing the strategy.
Pretty funny how the Verlisifags praise Sejun so much for breaking the meta, but he used Garchomp, scarf Gardevoir and Gothitelle which were some of the most popular Pokemon in vgc'14 (Garchomp was no.1 in usage iirc). There weren't any legends (besides Zapdos/Mol/Articuno, but they were pretty useless) to choose from so these were pretty much the best and most vesatile 'mons in the meta. But when another player uses 2 common metagame Pokemon on their team scrubs lose their shit "hurr durr only legends, anyone can win with this, just play with your favorite Pokemon, friendship wins hurr durr, be like sejun and win with an Emolga next hurr durr"
What's Big6? Is it the Landorus, Thundorus, Heatran, Cresellia, M Kang, and Aeigislash/Amoongus team? I head that lots of Japanese players still played that team

I'm not sure if these guys were stalling out the timer or were actually thinking about what to do, but it is a pretty slow game and all the turns jut seemed to take forever.
You have to think about what to do, it's not about spamming attack moves. Wolfe demonstrated it the best, he constantly read his opponent and realized what his opponent would do. It takes time to make those reads.
considering they need time to think they should be given more time to play with since the time seems to be run out quite often from what i've seen and it doesn't give the players sufficient time to strategize
I never thought of using legendary Pokemon in competition because A) most wifi competitions don't allow a good majority of legendaries and B) I just feel like it takes the fun out of raising competitive Pokemon. Why bother going through hours of breeding and training if you can just use the most broken and powerful Pokemon in the game?
They typically arent. They are rarely allowed in the world championship this time it was just because it was the last one of gen 6 so they wanted a big send off for it.

***** Ok first of all dude dont lisen to fan theories that have no evidence backing them up. Mega evolution hasnt been changed. We arent even 100% mega evolution will even be in the game I dont know where you heard these crazy theories but it isnt true and yes z moves can only be used once per battle even says so on the pokemon website. And no they arent going to get rid of the mega stone thing whats more likely is that the z ring has a slot on it for the mega stone that the player always has and the normal mega stones are still held items so that z ring fuctions for both z moves and mega evolutions. Thats almost as crazy as the people saying this is the last gen and that there is going to be a reboot of the series without any evidence that it is the last gen.
IMO turn time should work like Chess. Each player has a set total amount of time to expend on all turns. As soon as a player finishes their inputs, their personal timer stops running. Once a player has expended all of their personal time, they lose the game. That, or eliminate the round timer altogether and only utilize a turn timer so turns don't take forever.
Coming from someone who plays VGC both on Showdown and in-game, trust me when I say you do NOT want the latter option unless you want to deal with a potential 40+ minute PP stall war and/or evasion-boosting match.

well sports are interesting but i don't personally find them entertaining. that all boils down to personal preference, but sports come with physical benefits and psychological benefits too. same goes for learning to use an instrument. you cannot compare some button mashing 20 year old men to athletes or musicians.

No it's not. Ray-quay-za. It's a common misconception that it's pronounced Rayquoza, too common, but anyone who pronounces it that way it saying it wrong.
the problem is that in terms of pronouncation the english language is totally fucked up. The name contains Ray and yet its not pronounced like "Confuse Ray". Since it's not "Rayquayza" imo Ray-Kwah-Zah is correct
Okay, Wolfe played very well and everything and congratulations for him, but to be honest, this game is less fun with all these Uber tier Pokémon as the new rule for VGC which just stalls completely the game timer. It just has less variety strategy teams, its just as the commentators said "This game is how well you preserve your Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre". Even more, not being able to bring your families and not participants its even more lame cause the spectators its only a bunch of tryhards waiting for a nerdgasm play which theres not cause you only see primals and primals and primals and primals and if you had your family they would at least cheer you up but well I guess the company did that cause THEY KNEW the game would be just based on timer stall with the fcking same Pokémon.

This year's format specifically ADVOCATES for the use of restricted legendaries, meaning Nintendo and the Pokemon Company WANTED PEOPLE TO USE THEM. The idea was to feature Xerneas / Yveltal and the ORAS Primals and Rayquaza, etc as a final send-off for Generation 6 before Sun / Moon comes out. If you don't like it, then maybe you're playing the wrong game.

Zemy Hoxha Then your issue is with the game itself. This year's format was designed around these powerful legendaries. If you're unhappy about that, then you should be disappointed at the Pokemon company for designing this format. It's not like a lot of players enjoy being forced to use the Primals, Xerneas, etc either.
The fun part is, no matter how much wacky the format is the winning and runner up teams are always the wackiest of all the general teams every single year. Generic teams almost never make it to top except the nationals.
first of all understand the rules idiot in 2016 tournament they allowed to use legendarys. second of all any pokemon can be defeated. and third try to beat any of these players and see how well you do it takes a lot skills and stradegy to win even with legends
