For me, the biggest disappointment with the 3D models isn't the washed out color palettes, it's the lack of personality. Admittedly, this is more of an animation issue than a model issue, but it's not like you can have one without the other. Even in games like FRLG where the Pokemon sprites had no animation whatsoever, the sprites had interesting poses that really showed off that Pokemon's personality. In XY (and all later games), Pokemon just blandly stand there, and that's it. Gen V has my favorite battle style of any generation. Also, for what it's worth, XY is too easy regardless of whether you use the Exp Share or not. I've always been mixed on Mega Evolution. It never really accomplished what they were trying to do. It was intended to make bad older Pokemon viable, and while it succeeded at that a few times, most of the Megas went to Pokemon that were already strong. And even when it does go to a Pokemon that genuinely needed it the resulting mega usually isn't even good by Mega standards, and that's a problem since you can only Mega evolve one. Mega Beedrill, for example, is pretty good, but you're still generally better off going with something better as your Mega. While I think 10 encounters is a bit much, I actually like how XY handled the roaming legendary bird. I've always hated roaming Pokemon, so the fact that they eventually settle down and you can fight them in a normal battle where they don't run is appreciated.

kalos is so beautiful though. it really has this unique energy. walking under the trees in route 6, exploring parfum palace, getting lost in the streets of lumiose, sitting on the swing in the rain in the playground in route 14, or on the big mushrooms in laverre city... these games definitely have problems but man oh man do they nail the atmosphere

Taking all of the flaws into consideration - the lack of anything meaningful for Zygarde, the tease of areas that never became accessible, the nonsensical plot of Team Flare that would have made way more sense in a game about the ecosystem, the room for improvement with some of the battle backs and graphics, etc - as well as the odd way Zygarde cells were shoehorned into the Alola games, it becomes extremely obvious they intended to make Pokémon Z but canceled it in favor of a new Gen for the 20th anniversary marketing push. Pokémon Z was a thing and you can’t convince me otherwise 😅

My first Pokémon game.. then I went back and fell in love with the franchise again

I feel like X and Y needs a remaster. It needs the better post-game and a better story, but honestly, the world is one of the best worlds I feel we've seen. It took the French feel and ran with it.

While I'm not too fond of X and Y and there really shoud've been a Z version, hands down this game has the best regional dex and wish that more games had a split regional dex like X and Y

I always thought that gen 6 while took a step forward with the 3d, took a few steps backwards in difficulty, content, characters and story. I really hated that the underperformance of gen 5 caused GF to take these shortcuts. Gen 6 really started the downfall of the franchise, even though I enjoyed Sun and Moon.

I must be honest, I absolutely love X/Y. My Y copy wasn't the first Pokémon game that I played. In fact, it was Black (which is on the second place on my list, closely followed by ORAS). Somehow the whole idea with Megas and such was intriguing to me, and honestly I love them more than Z-moves and Dynamaxing. The legendaries look amazing to me, especially Yveltal which is my favorite amongst them all. While the game was really easy due to the Exp. Share being broken af, I enjoyed playing through it. I can't wait for these games to be remade. This generation will always have a special place in my heart.

I really love x and y for what they brought to us. The story wasnt the best but I found it fun with the new pokemon and megas. The pokedex in these games is huge and gives u options on different teams to use especially since there wasnt alot of new pokemon to choose from. Kalos is beautiful and is in my top 3 pokemon regions I enjoy. Overall x and y were great and should have had more development time and a pokemon z was needed to give the kalos games that extra love just as platinum did to d/p.

I'm playing X for the first time and using Citra and, before watching the video, I want to say that I'm enjoying it a lot. Not because of the story obviously but because of everything else. And I'm catching everything (which gives experience) and still I'm not overleveled (without using Exp Share). So, you really can play the games without being overleveled and without skipping trainers, and you can even catch everything and still be on the same levels as the regular trainers. You can get overleveled so easily if you use the experience share because that multiplies the experience you obtain by 6, since it gives the rest of the team the same amount of experience your Pokémon obtained (which also happens if you switch Pokémon in battle, so if you would obtain 100 experience by defeating a Bunnelby but decide to switch to a different Pokémon, both of your mons will obtain 100 experience). My team, right before the 7th badge, is Greninja, Doublade, Lucario evolved from Riolu (so not the one Korrina gives you), Talonflame, Gardevoir and Roserade. I'm not using the Kanto starter (or the Snorlax since it's broken, it's too strong) because X and Y have so many diverse Pokémon, one starter is enough. I considered using more than 6 Pokémon if I got overleveled because there are so many available Pokémon.

Glad after 3000 years I'm still alive for the X & Y review. Your Black and White review convinced me to play it so thanks it was well worth it.

The difficulty issues that plagued the future games started with these games. It sucks that now we have to brush through the story, gyms, and the evil team until post game, for battles to get difficult.

XY are the games that made me start to play Pokémon and i still like them, however i understand why fans from previous gen don't like it, it's Just a lot of wasted potential. Mega-Evolutions, AZ,Xerneas, Yveltal Zygarde,Dianthea, Kalos Power Plant, so many cool things that should have get more attention. And the Lengedaries is really the worst part for me like the game barely talk About Them and leave us with so many unanswerd question about them like, Yveltal, Where does he come from? How did Team Flare know its existence? How is he related to the Team Flare plot? How did they discover its egg?! At the end of the Day XY are good games but they feel rushed on some aspects and could have been more memorabele if Game Freak give Them more time

For as much as I like x and y(mostly due to nostalgia) I really wish it got an extra year of 2 in development. Many of its issues could probably be fixed in that year. In addition it could probably make for a better postgame as once the looker missions are finished there is next to nothing to do.

As well as being a brilliant video that totally encapsulates the way I feel about gen 6, the editing is incredible! The music is well chosen, blends smoothly together and perfectly timed. I've missed you, man.

I loved X. Villian was meh. But the game was so fun and Mega Evolutions are fantastic. I absolutely love Noivern.

This was great, Stan. I'm always happy to see an upload from you. I'm sure you get a lot of questions about your videos and the time it takes, but the editing work you do and the amount of capture and sifting through footage really make your videos shine. A lot of channels will talk about something and just use general or repeating clips, but you always make a point to show what you're talking about on-screen. Then there"s music sticking to the generation and showing off favorite tracks without needing to pause the video to list them off, as well as matching the tone you're trying to achieve with your writing. Add in the title cards and transitions that match the game aesthetics to really go above and beyond to make each video feel unique to its generation without losing the cohesive style you've used for the series. If you want to be faster with videos and feel the need to drop any of that, your writing itself more than makes up for it so don't feel like you need to push yourself, but I just wanted to make sure you knew it was noted and appreciated. You touched on my very real problem with this generation, and that is potential. Despite not loving this generation, the opening of the game is generally one of the best in the series for me. The start all the way to around the 3rd gym badge really feels like an adventure and capture some of Sinnoh's perfect blend of naturalistic map design with game utility. It's slow but filled with events along with a ton of fun nods to Gen 5 in the architecture. You're presented with the mystique and mystery of mega evolution, and hanging out with your group of friends is exciting until you realize that's all they're ever going to be allowed to be. The issue is that the best chunk of the game is the beginning, which leaves 2/3 of the region to explore and that really starts to drag. Questions are answered in unsatisfying ways. What is the mystery of mega evolution? It exists a couple of towns over and despite you being tasked with solving it, at that point, it is basically dropped as the mystery has mostly been solved. To add insult to injury, the game tells you it works because of the love between a trainer and a Pokemon, yet the first Pokemon you receive is not able to mega evolve. It's such an obvious point of friction and comes to define the problems of XY to me. That same friction can be found in the Team Flare plot. I find the motivation behind Lysandre incredibly interesting. The world does have limited resources, and overpopulation has the potential to be a devastating problem. Yet Kalos doesn't feel overpopulated. Its biggest city feels sparse compared to Castelia from Black and White, which is probably at least partially due to the limitations of the 3DS. And Lysandre barely touches on this. You only hear overpopulation as a motivator outright said by the Professor after Lysandre has been defeated. And the rest of his backstory comes from a random NPC that doesn't even have a unique sprite. None of this takes away from the core gameplay being as fun as it always is, but personally, exploring a region is as exciting as new Pokemon for me. And Kalos, whether it's from the awkward mishmash of chibi characters in a more realistic world or the sparseness of the latter half of the game, just didn't satisfy that. And while the AZ battle is the most I've laughed at a Pokemon game because of the sheer absurdity of the story completing, I do appreciate the lore and theory crafting it has allowed between Gen 5, 6, and 8 all having reference to Kings from 3000 years ago. I'm hoping that's touched on in a future game, but even if not it's fun for me to think about. Looking forward to the Hoenn remake review. There's plenty to talk about. (I have a response I wrote elsewhere about why I think the Black and White ending doesn't feel like Game Freak chickened out on answering the Pokemon abuse, but I'll have to look for it. Basically, the only one who ever comes close to abusing Pokemon in the way others bring up is the player character themselves, and that is part of why Ghetsis is such a good villain and manipulator, as it immediately pits you against N. We see the Pokemon talk for themselves, like with Musharna pretending to be Ghetsis, so we know they have an understanding of what's going on. N constantly argues with Pokemon, who each tell him he misunderstands. Most trainers only have a couple of Pokemon that they take care of, and we see this exemplified in Hugh and the importance of his sister's Purloin. Our ability as a kid to beat adults who have trained all their lives shows the contrast with us as players abusing the mechanics of Pokemon. Essentially, the game is asking us to reflect on our choices, and what is the truth behind the ideal. N accepts that you love your Pokemon and you are showing strength through kindness. If you feel otherwise, that is what the game is asking you personally to contend with.)

Even though I'm a 90's kid, Y was my first Pokemon game. Froakie was my first pokemon ever, and that's why I love gen 6, and why I'm among the hordes of people who love Greninja

This generation is easily the most forgettable for me. I played it once through and never touched it again and has the shortest play time of any Pokemon game for me. While I love lots of the ideas X and Y introduce such as character customization, mega evolution, and a 3D world for the first time, like you said, the games just feel so unpolished. There were several mysteries from the games such as the ghost girl in the random building, a message on the back of a train station sign, or the strange souvenir that never had any explanation. In my opinion, this is the one generation that needed an enhanced version the most and yet is the only generation without one. Zygarde felt like an afterthought, the power plant was unfinished with several doors that never opened, and there was virtually no post game. All of these issues and more could have been fixed in a Pokemon Z version. And like mentioned, most of the characters just felt disconnected from one another. I couldn't tell you even half of the gym leaders' names let alone what typing they were or what city they were in. This is something I really appreciate about Sword and Shield. They made sure that the gym leaders had more of a presence than just a figurehead at the end of the next gym. Overall, I thought this was a really well done review and highlighted a lot of the problems with X and Y while also being fair and giving it praise where it was due. I hadn't thought about how gorgeous of a region Kalos actually was or how good the Pokemon designs were because I was too busy focusing on everything X and Y did wrong. Looking forward to that ORAS review!

I think this is a great review! XY felt lacking in many ways, but it's the generation I played the most even though Gen.5 is my favorite. I made so many memories with those games, especially online. These were the games where I learned about competitive battling and was constantly breeding pokemon. They may feel weird playing nowdays, but they were so important back in 2013 and how united the fandom felt at that time. I love going back to my original Y savefile and just see how complete it is with everything I've ever needed in one game.

I've always had some kind of grudge against X/Y because I heard all his flaws from other people on internet. I have to admit that while playing these game, I didn't feel them as bad games, I had lots of fun playing it. But it was clear as water that they didn't have the same level of quality of the previous games, so the grudge continued with me. Generation VII came and it also had its flaws and I started to feel like where Sun/Moon fails, is where X/Y sucessed and vice-versa. Nowadays I look back to X/Y with more kind and miss these days when the community was so united, completely differente of the situation of today with the boderline mediocre Sword/Shield games

I love XY with all my heart! It was Gen 6 who brought me back to Pokemon after Gen 5 disgusting games! XY gave us the best Feature on all franchise: MEGA EVOLUTION! The concept of Pokémon evolve even beyond to get max of its battle potential is amazing. And the Megas designs are just badass! Kalos Dex was very well balanced and has a lot of great evolutions line! Although it has less Pokémon, Game Freak tried to improve quality over quantity. As a result, they created OG like Greninja, Sylveon, Talonflame, Aegislash, Hawlucha, Malamar, Phanthumb, Goodra, Noivern, Tyrantrum, Xerneas, Yvetal... The transition graphical to 3D was really good! Pokémon models were great for its time, and all game looks so gorgeous! The games have greats new online features like Wonder trade and GTS (properly done), and big improvements on the shiny hunter mechanics! The introduction of trainer customization was another cool news of those games. Although some people say it, I don’t think Gen 6 was pandering Kanto! They just put Starter Kanto Pokémon cause they created Megas for them! And it is really nice you could get two started in the same quest! And, Finally, Gen 6 has the best and most creative competitive scenario of all generations! Megas pushed the battle system so forward and the metagame was never so balanced and enjoyable to play! All of it said, I can easily say that Gen 6 brought Pokémon Back to the top of World! And we all should be thankful for those games exist!

I'll personally give XY a solid B, the story may not have been great, but the worldbuilding AZ's backstory added to the pokemon universe may have 1 of the most important pieces of info ever dropped in any game, it lead to so much theory and discussion its unbelievable also, i loved the looker mission to death ngl i wish we had a pokemon Z, a fixed kalos couldve easily been 1 of the best games in the franchise

I was 12 years old when x and y came out. They were my first ever Pokemon game. I got for Christmas when I was 13.1 year later.

I wish so dearly that I liked this gen, but there's something that makes me feel claustrophobic with the way the camera is framed in it when compared to Sun and Moon. I can't say I 100% get why, but it made my time with it a chore...

I remember in 2013 when all of the reviews started coming out for the game. I was initially excited for the game and I couldn't wait to play it but I couldn't afford a 3ds to play it on. In 2018 I finally played X for the first time and most of that excitement from before basically became non existent. Sure I liked mega evolution, most of the music, the transition to 3d, and the pss, but there were many cons that made my experience feel more like a drag rather than a joy. The overall plot/story and most of the characters were not rememberable to me even though it's only been about two years since I played the game. I feel like GameFreak could've done better with the story since they came out with Black and White only 3 years before. Overall though they aren't horrible Pokemon games or video games in general, just probably one of the least favorite games in the main series of games for me right above Sword and Shield. I like and respect your critical review and opinions on the games.

Every so often, I return to watch these reviews again. They're wonderfully enjoyable, and maybe one day we will see the other games. But regardless of that, I hope wherever RandomTens is, that they're doing well.

Man! This was an fair review. Good job. Oh boy. X & Y. Honestly, this is where my experience of Pokemon really started to drop. I really want to like it. I really do. But these games are so disappointing & bland to me. Despite some good thing that I do liked about X & Y like Fairy types, the looks of Kalo, character customization & few others, everything else from the gameplay wise causes the damaging price. It's an real shame really because it could've been alot better. If only we had Pokemon Z, this gen could've been one of the best Pokemon gens we had. Imagine with Gen. 4 that we didn't have Platinum and were stuck with Diamond & Pearl. That's how cryptic it'll be. As it is, this is where the franchise starts to go downhill from there. It's not the worst game I've ever played nor it isn't like Sonic 06 bad. And I don't think it's the worst Pokemon game I've played ( Red, Blue & Yellow, Diamond & Pearl only and even Sword & Shield are my least favorite. ). But this is definitely one of the weakest entry of the series & with still no Z version coming, it is really mediocre at it's best. It deserves better.

I was waiting for this video, I started playing Pokemon X few days ago, I have already played Omega Ruby and Ultra Sun, but X/Y actually surprised me with graphical details, omg they actually poured their heart out on this game. Never before in a Pokemon game I took pause to look around and enjoy just the view.

I think if Pokémon Z was ever released it’d be like the best game ever. I think the “fast food” analogy is really accurate, they’re quick accessible, and tasty. I’ve spent 1,500+ hours in X and Y specifically, just because it’s the easiest way to come back to the series swinging. I think an underrated aspect of X and Y is the roster, the Pokémon available in X and Y both brand new and old feel hand selected to deliver a varied experience on every play through, other games (Gen 4 specifically in my opinion) feel like you have to slog through like 8 routes of the same wild encounters before getting to that 1 or 2 new encounters you’re on the lookout for, with XY it’s much more of a buffet selection, where you can waltz around picking up strong Pokémon without a plan whereas Sinnoh requires studying a menu of a limited number of strong Pokémon to make sure that you’re going to be able to have a palatable experience.

Another fantastic review as always Stan. IMO, a little too easy on what I feel to be the most boring gen with some of the worst pokemon (Aromatisse???), it’s still pokemon, and it’s got a solid core concept of fun. Although I did spend 550+ hours on it with friends!! Excited to see what kind of takes you got on ORAS and SuMo!

I love these reviews you put together, and I too haven't played through ORAS since they first released (despite original gen 3 being my favorite gen) so I'm very interested in your thoughts. Not sure what your reasoning is as to why you haven't gone back to them recently, but for myself I have just been reluctant to wipe my save file since I like the fact that my trainer card in that game shows my date and time of completion of the main story was the day after the game's release. I do remember absolutely loving the delta episode post game so I'm wondering if you think that still holds up.

Masuda needs to have less of a hand in the development of Pokemon games. His decisions are arguably the reason the series keeps falling flat on its face

I must say XY brought Pokémon back to the top of the world after controversial Gen 5 games. And we must remember that XY outsold BW and B2W2 in a smaller base console. At time BW was released, there were more than 100 millions Nintendo DS solds in the world. Otherwise, in XY launch, the number of 3DS in market was very smaller number! And yet XY could outsells BW. XY had to struggle with the bad reputation that BW left to the franchise and the rise of smartphones games (plus Yokai-watch). And now, 7 years after their launch, we can say that they dealt with that near perfectly! I think XY were the games which reunited the old and the news fans to enjoy the primordial concept of Pokémon. As a result, they made the franchise really strong again and lead Pokémon to place the title of the Most profitable entertainment franchise of the world! We really should be thankful for those games happened! And Mega Evolutions are just badass!!!

Gen VI is one of my favourites. I'm not blind, I know it has a lot of problems, but I always thought Gen VI was the terrain to make something better in the future. Then they just screwed up in my opinion.

I am so sick of people who supposedly know pokemon that keep saying that the EXP share started working this was in Gen 6. IT WORKED THE EXACT SAME WAY IN GEN 1!!! While I can't speak for Gen 2 as I don't remember ever using it there, in the very first gen it acted the same way, this was not new in gen 6!

It really sucks how many people seem to dislike this gen. It got so bad, that a friend of mine refuses to play these games because people online say that these games are too easy and have other flaws. Even when he enjoys Sun and Moon, which MORE people seem to dislike. Instead, he just takes their opinions as his own and says these games are bad without ever playing them (and even then, no one actually thought these games are bad, just not as good as the others). I, on the other hand, think that these games might be some of my favorites in the series.

Honestly these games are my favorite by far, I don't really care about the story, because I don't play for the story at all, like if I want a good story I'm not going to play a pokemon game of all things, for the difficulty, yeah it's too easy but honestly grinding for exp just isn't fun at all, it's not "challenging" to make you fight the same wild pokemon over and over again, so I'm happy with the exp-share, and even then they actually give you the option to turn it off. /cough cough sword and shield/ And I see some people complaining about the graphics but honestly I love them, I've always loved the DS-3DS era of 3d graphics and yeah its mostly just nostalgia because I grew up with the ds and 3ds but for me I love the graphics, a lot of the areas in the game honestly look amazing for a 3ds game too, a couple smaller things, Zygarde got done dirty, he looks so cool, and even in SM all they had you do is get some cells and get new forms of zygarde, which is another reason I wish they made a 3rd game, I love the chibi art style, it's my favorite art style of every game and is honestly the most unique, the past games are just pixelated, which there's nothing wrong about but the art style isn't that unique, and SM and SWSH just look like real people which isnt bad but I prefer the Chibi style XY had, another thing I really disliked was the Kanto pandering, giving you a second starter made the game even easier then it already was, as well as how charizard and mewtwo got 2 megas, megas were also really cool to me, I never liked Z Moves at all because it's just a move, and I just really like seeing old pokemon get new flashier designs, G Max pokemon made it a lot better though imo because it gave more pokemon new forms again, another thing I loved was the character customization, like honestly I prefer it over SMs customization because in XY every outfit felt unique while in SM most of the shirts were just a T shirt with a design on it. The pokemon designs in this gen easily had the best of every gen with quality over quantity, Also another big thing, this game easily has the best online of every game, festival plaza was a cool idea but it was just annoying to go through, and SWSH was just XYs online but worse. So overall I know this game is far from perfect and I can easily see that, but all the things it does just makes me love it, as well as it just being a lot of nostalgia lol, also if you couldn't tell I really disliked SM.

Watching the first two or so minutes of this video, I was like, did he just get the game? Oh, no. X and Y storyline isn't the weakest in the franchise, it's Sword and Shield's storyline. No offense. It's got weaker storyline, I think because the game was developed around same time as Black and White Version 2.

Actually, this is the point where I jumped back in as well, I grew up with Red & blue and played every release until Diamond & Pearl where I got kinda tired of Pokémon, I started to see that every Pokémon game is about a 10 year old kid who becomes a trainer, sets out his journey, collects 8 badges, beats the league and some evil group along the way, it felt like every game was the same. But when I saw X&Y I got excited for the games again, it looked different! Its too bad I missed out on Heart Gold and Soul Silver because of it, because Johto is my favorite region and those games are so freaking expensive now.

For all it’s faults, Pokémon Y is still one of my favorite games because it got me back into Pokémon and games expanded my taste in video games. The sixth generation also brought us remakes of Ruby and Sapphire, my all time favorite Pokémon games. So it was amazing being able play Y and Alpha Sapphire because before getting my 3ds in early 2014, I only played Pokémon through emulators, so Y was my first true Pokémon experience. I’ll never forget all the memories, battling my friends in high school, spending all summer 2014 breeding, trading and completing my Pokédex.
