Here are some ideas! Unusual Texture Challenge: -lutefisk or something else gelatinous -foods cooked in gelatin/jello, like aspic -blended a savory food like a burger -baby food or some sort of mash/paste -raw or boiled okra -soggy bread, like bread soaked in water Raw Produce challenge: -ginger -garlic -onions -bitter melon "Interesting" Salad challenge: -Waldorf salad -Ambrosia salad -Jello salad -Candle salad -Perfection salad
@@zekeeynon8530 soggy bread is a Christmas dish in Sweden(Well you might know it since you mentioned lutefisk, Norweigan spelling). It translates to "Dipped in the pot" and you take bread and soak it in stock(usually the one you boiled your ham in). Traditionally it's with a wort(leftover from beer making) bread, but in northern parts of Sweden its a thing to use crisp flatbread.
@@werdfeefs7027 Honestly. If he wasn't given the point for the licorice round because he enjoyed it, then Barry shouldn't have gotten the point for the wasabi round.
IDEA - weird fish dishes for chefs - Surströmming (lightly-salted fermented Baltic Sea herring), Herring Under a Fur Coat (Russian herring salad) or just pickled herring in a jar, Lutefisk (dried whitefish It is made from aged stockfish), Sannakji (sliced raw fish usually in Korea), Tuna eyes, Shirako (the milt, or sperm sacs, of male cod), Hakarl (fermented and dried shark from Iceland), Stinkheads (fermented Salmon from Alaska)
Yes, Lutefisk! And also there are a lot of recipes on this channel that I think look both fascinating and terrifying (because I’m not used to them) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qsouZwheabQ.html
It genuinely drives me nuts how overlooked Mike is. He DOMINATED three of those rounds, and it feels like his overall pleasant demeanor just gets completely overshadowed.
Durian belonged to Jamie, fighting the gag reflex while also trying not to gag from Barry gagging right there? That was impressive. I know "sympathy gagging" is totally a thing. When my siblings used to get sick I struggled every single time. Jamie deserved that.
Yeah and remember when the spicy poker face. Everyone loves the first wing recipe so how is this any different. They should James judge this instead of Ben because he changes the rules every time
Yeah but it wasn't a peppercorn. And he still clearly struggled with it. Mike probably could have eaten triple the amount of licorice and not had an ounce of struggle.
I think Ben maybe said it wrong but I still think it was Jamie's point because Mike showed happiness and the point of poker face is no emotion so I think it was the right decision
I feel like Mike got robbed round 2 and 4. For round 2 I actually believed Mike was enjoying what he was eating while I could see in Jamie’s face he wasn’t. While for the 4th round, Barry enjoyed to Wasbi so why didn’t Mike get to enjoy the liquorice?
Becasue Barry still had to fight his reaction. He even said he was worried for a second before he got through it. Mike just enjoyed it and didn't have to worry. That's at least how I understood Ben's reasoning. Besides I think he implied that Mike might have leaned to far on the other side of overtly, enthusiastically enjoying it? But in the end it's subjective imo. ben ruled the way he did and I'm sure Mike appreciates your comments :D
As an amateur poker player, I profited just over $20,000 last year, I can tell you that if you like your cards in poker the pokerface is just as important, if not more, as it is if you didn't like your cards. The point of a pokerface is to remain stoic irrespective of what you feel about your cards good or bad. Mike doesn't deserve the point because he showed real emotion and didn't remain stoic abut the liquorice.
This is one of my favorite themes of yours.. it's entertaining watching the boys suffer, and educational / opens the mind to new things all at the same time.. as peeps have said below, a Chef version would be cool too. I like that once we see them squirm, we also get to see possible practical applications of said 'dodgy ingredients'.
Poor Mike, he deserved the liquorice point, it's not his fault that he likes it.... Edit: he won the spicy poker face and he was smiling and singing to fake his way through the pain there
A pokerface means to not show what you actually feel. While Barry might have enjoyed the Flower and Wasabi his face was still neutral while mike showed genuine joy
Came back to rewatch this vid all the way through just to make sure I dropped the like and comment after Mike had his moment. Mike; from one Mike to another - the second I saw your head in your hands I had instant sympathetic resonance with that exact feeling. Made sure to come back half a year later just to make sure to give you props after I had some sushi today.
Barry: I love wasabi Ben: Barry gets the point Mike: I love licorice Ben: Jamie gets the point cause mike loves licorice it doesn’t count..... A little biased against mike?
I’d say the difference is wasabi causes a burning and sinus flush. I love wasabi but a spoonful would cause a visible reaction, if you like licorice it’s just eating candy there isn’t going to be a visible reaction
I'm a Finn who loves her salmiakki, and those featured were not really heavy duty ones. I also love wasabi - but will show eye watering and sweat... possibly drippy nose stuff on the side... and clearing of the throat if need be. :D It's a different beast, but I don't think salmiakki forces your body to react. Wasabi does. :) Well done guys!!! :)
i'd love to see them try alot more fermented asian products fermented tofu, fermented beans, fermented fish, fermented chilis etc.... they're all really tasty, but somehow hated by typical westerners
To be fair, the right species of durian, eaten fresh right after it falls of the tree usually smells like a sweet flower, and it will taste like a sweet custard.
@@owenyeoh1275 Yes I am. I ain't joking about the numbness, it's not a taste, don't know how to describe it, according to the owner, it's due to the freshness of the fruit, so yeah, if you have the opportunity you should try out!
Yes we need to see that, "Rotten" food challenge: century eggs, Casu marzu (maggot cheese) if you can find some legally, Balut (Philippines chick in egg), Hákarl (Icelandic rancid fish), Airag (Mongolian fermented milk),
Yes to all that and some swedish surströmming (fermented herring) for an appetizer (preferably a can that is at least a year old that has started swelling).
Add in sambal tempoyak to that mix, fermented durian sambal. I just want to see the durian reaction taken to another level with fermented durian, fermented shrimp paste and chilli all in one.
I haven't watched the round yet, but in the spice version of the challenge, remember? Jamie had points deducted for tears (which he cannot control), despite actually keeping a good expression and chatting casually. Maybe they were trying to adjust to the people who were outraged on that? 😂
They did have surströmming a few years back as a “punishment” if a remember correctly. They prepared it incorrectly though cus they just opened the can in air and just took a bite from the fish lol :/// I mean if u just open it like that off it’s going to smell a TON lmao
The durian fruit round had me crying with laughter. The whispering of rotten eggs reminded me of when I was younger an my mates would be hungover (I'm one of the lucky ones I dont get hangovers) and I'd be asking if they wanted runny eggs for breakfast and see who hurled first 🤣 x
I love how it's like, we're trying these foods that are weird to us, but Ben still teaches us about them and how to use it and stuff. It's not all just "eww weird foreign food"
I mean, the food wouldnt be weird to them if they ate it as intended. They’re purposely eating it in gross quantities, even the durian wasnt really eaten correctly. Having it fresh it smells great, but the durian they had was overripe. Gotta be in china to get the good sfuff
Chef's challenge: Yes. You should do world delicacies like haggis from Scotland, balut (fermented chicken/duck egg) from the Philippines, century egg from China, maggot cheese in Sardinia, Surstromming from Sweden, and rocky mountain oysters from the USA are just to name a few.
To be fair, Rocky Mountain Oysters are only gross conceptually... they've eaten tongue... they have no issue eating organ meat. flavor wise they're not unusual at all
@@Kappetan Huh, the thought has always stopped me but somehow fish eyes were not problem. 🤣 I'm Filipino so I've definitely made my rounds around some interesting food and meat parts, I even enjoy haggis now and then.
@@JadeBlackWolf Yes they have--in two separate videos if I'm not mistaken--but it was a couple of years ago now. Edit: It was in an AfterTaste video in 2016, and then again a year later in Barry's Food Hell video.
There is a fermented salmon that Eskimos and northern natives love. I cannot remember the name off the top of my head, but apparently it makes surstromming seem like fresh Herring. They should also try Muktuk. Salted blubber.
The szechuan button is sometimes called a buzz button in the US and Disney land blends it to a powder and uses it for some of their cocktails in the star wars bar. Its weird, but strangely addictive
YES chefs next and get Mike to dish out the points. Never tried them personally but I’ve always wondered about those meat jello salads. Aspic! A real variety of sensations would be great. Spicy, cold, fishy, slimy & chewy, etc.
I tasted okra in China for the first time - still buy it from time to time. So nothing challenging here, I think. But I full-heartedly agree with bitter gourd/melon! If someone doesn’t know what ‘bitter’ means, try THAT and you’ll understand 🤣
Oh my god yes. This would be hilarious!! And not from any of these incredible London restaurants takeouts either, we need McDonald’s, KFC, and not forgetting that dodgy kebab place by every nightclub
I'm with Mike on this, "poker face" works both ways, yeah you need a good one to bluff but just as good one to keep a straight face when your hand is good. Mike was totally underappreciated in this.
Is James okay? :( We haven't seen him in a while and really miss him. Best to bring him back soon while trying some really sour stuff...? O:) With Ben...?
