I remember doing a solo-run of Leaf Green with Raticate once. I was consistenly blown away at how crazy his movepool is! Like, "Hey buddy, can you learn Thunderbolt for me?" Yeah. "How about Shadow Ball, for funsies?" Absolutely. "Ice Beam for those pesky Dragonites?" Yerr. Ratigan the Raticate begged for a challenge, but didn't realize that no one could stand up to a God.
@@jacobstrangman7564 the way the ai worked in gen 1 was that if there was a super effective move the opponent would use that move. As the nidorino is a poison type and dewgong knew rest, which is a psychic type move, dewgong would only use rest even though it did nothing. However if they used a nidoking which is a ground type the dewgong would use a water or ice type move which would do damage.
So the Dewgong would try to use a water ice type move or rest. It will probably go for a Water or Ice type move once. While since it's a Nidorino it will counter it by falling asleep like an idiot. I get it now.
Couple clarification items regarding the video (warning: it's lengthy, but explains most of your questions): - You figured out the save-scumming bit later in the video, but an acceptable form of Save-scumming is how most folks would do this challenge (And how the Platinum no-damage run was done. Smallant used specific scum/check points where he bounced back if he got hit: the gym badges). Smallant's run proved a no-damage is technically possible by getting all the right luck. Gamechamp's run pulled the whole thing off regardless of his luck (or lack thereof). - Post-Rattata runs were runs after he survived the first Rival battle, ran from all the battles until he got pokeballs, -and- caught a Rattata before getting hit. The fact there is only 1 means the run he is on was the only one in which he managed to get that far. - I believe Swift was the only no-accuracy check damage move in Gen1. No Aerial Ace or Shock Wave. - Jolteon was picked for his safety to acquire, Speed, Special, and STAB Thunderbolt (another 99.6% accuracy move). Even at lv100 and pumped up full of Calcium, and stat-trained, and Arcanine at lv61, Shock Wave would likely not have been strong enough... From the Showdown Damage Calculator for RBY: Jolteon Thunderbolt vs. Lvl 61 Arcanine: 207-244 (87.3 - 102.9%) -- 20.5% chance to OHKO. Chance in-game is likely better since I think all enemy Pokemon have 0 DVs (the IVs of gen1) and 0 stat-training, but infinite PP. This changes in later games (Cynthia is notorious for having Perfect IV pokemon), but does remove needing a range for Swift on Alakazam and Thunderbolt on Arcanine.

@@jacobstrangman7564 True but in gen 1 the ai would always go for super effective moves, so dewgong wouldnt have used rest over and over while he was setting up and instead would also have used ice/aurora beam

It bugs me how low your volume is but how neutral you talk. You can't have the volume too high because you'll sound to loud but if it's too low because then you can't hear the video for anything. No insult. I'm just pointing it out.
If fail you can reload until you succeed. In the pokemon Platinum challenge, they were allowed to reload back to the last gym you beat(save scumming). In this challenge if you take damage you have to start over from the beginning of the game deleting the save.
