This is good. This is the kind of new construction I expect to see on cities like Lagos to help manage traffic flow as the population continues to grow. It will be nice for Ghana to carryout this scale of development in Kumasi considering the size and population of the city as well.

This interchange looks like it's going to be the largest by area and the tallest in the country as the only 4-tier one (the Circle interchange is 3-tier and I don't know of any other 4-tier one in the West Africa region even). Really is a monster project. Khophi, we're crowning you as the interchange god - you be bigger than Nana sef on showing them with poetry. There's another interchange in Accra ongoing - Obetsebi Lamptey - at the end of Graphic Road, Kaneshie area. If you're in Accra and get the chance, see if you can do your magic flyover there too for us. Thanks again for what you're doing, bro.

Ghana extends Pokuase Interchange completion date By Fidelis John - Contruction Review - date: Nov 22, 2019 Pokuase Interchange Ghana . - The government of Ghana has approved six months extension request from the contractor working on the US $84m four-tier Pokuase Interchange in the Ga West Municipality of the Greater Accra. This means that the project would be completed towards the end of next year, instead of April 2020, the original scheduled date of completion. Mr Kwabena Bempong, Associate Vice President of Associated Consultants Limited, a consulting company for the project, made the disclosure in Accra during a tour of the project site. He further added that the contractor organized additional shifts and was convinced the project would be completed on schedule. 50% complete Currently, the project is 50% complete; the town roads, 6km of adjoin roads from Awoshie to Kwabenya stretch had been asphalted. Streets lights, pedestrian walkways, traffic lights have also been completed; and the piles (foundations for the road) and piers (columns which would carry the overhead roads) are nearing completion. Mr Bempong said the contractor had almost completed the storm drains and embankment along both sides of the Awoshie and Accra-Nsawam stretch to prevent flooding and landslides on the road. The consultant said the Ministry of Roads and Highways is looking for funds to complete the storm drain on the Sunkwa River at ACP junction to prevent flooding in the communities along the bank of river. Full compensation Mr Bempong further added that the government has released funds for compensation and currently all those who were affected by the project are being paid. “The total compensation for the project, is estimated at US $1.8m,” he said. The project has provided employment for more than 400 Ghanaians, particularly people living in and around Pokuase. Mr Bempong also said most of the materials such as iron roads, sand, chippings and cement were sourced locally.

You're right, bro. The way to go is us seeing ourselves as part of the problem too - as citizens. We haven't held the politicians accountable enough nor have we paid enough taxes internally ourselves for the country to be less reliant on external donor support. They more we can improve on these ideals I feel we'll do better in our infrastructure delivery overall.

General News of Monday, 17 June 2019 - Source: Ghanaian Times :Pokuase Interchange redesigned into 4-tier« The $84-million Pokuase Interchange project in the Ga West Municipality in the Greater Accra Region has been redesigned from a three-tier to a four-tier stack interchange. The move is to facilitate more vehicular movement and enhance traffic flow on the interchange. Mr Kwabena Bempong, the Associate Vice President of Associated Consultants Limited, a consulting company for the project, who disclosed this to the Ghanaian Times last Friday, said the redesigning of the project followed the ‘value engineering’ of the design for the project.He said the new design was technically superior from the initial design and was meant to ease traffic on the road and to improve the time for the construction and reduce the cost of the project. “The new design will not increase the cost of the project but rather reduce it and will improve the efficiency of the project,” Mr Bempong said. He said the new design would require no traffic lights unlike the previous design and would allow vehicles to flow freely; adding that the current design has a lane for traffic from Accra to Kumasi, second tier for traffic from Accra to Awoshie. According to him, the third tier would accommodate traffic from Awoshie to Nsawam and Kwabenya to Accra and the fourth tier to handle traffic from Awoshie to Kwabenya. Mr Bempong said the project was currently 45 per cent complete and would be completed before the end of 2020. He said the contractor had requested for additional six months extension for the completion of the project and was yet to be approved by the government. The project was originally scheduled to be completed in April 2020. Mr Bempong said currently the contractor had completed 250 out of 478 piles (deep foundation) to carry the piers (the columns for the interchange). In addition, the consultant said the contractor had almost completed the Pokuase local and adjoining roads. The construction of the Pokuase and adjoining town roads was to improve the lives of the people in the adjoining communities and help divert traffic when the contractor enters the main road. Furthermore, Mr Bempong said the project was 45 per cent complete as of last Friday. He said the contractor had relocated all the utility lines of PDS and GRIDCo and the contractor would soon construct underground channels for all the telecommunication companies to relocate their lines. The consultant said the contractor would construct a large storm drain for the Ayawaso drain and outflow drains to prevent flood water from inundating the road. Outlining challenges facing the project, Ing Bempong said the current rainfall was affecting the project but would not affect the project schedule. The consultant engineer said the delay in compensating the individuals affected by the project was affecting the pace of work since some of the structures on the project site had been demolished. Ing Bempong said only 25 per cent of the GH¢10 million allocated for compensation had been paid. The groundbreaking ceremony was performed July last year for commencement of the Pokuase Interchange The project, which is jointly funded by the African Development and Government of Ghana, is expected to be completed in two years and would ease traffic congestion and improve urban mobility along the Accra-Nsawam road. The construction which is being undertaken by Messrs China Zhongmei Engineering Company Limited forms part of the Accra Urban Transport Projects. The Accra-Nsawam road is an important international route that connects the south to the north of the country and other Sahelian countries such as Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger. The completion of the road is expected to reduce the time commuters spent between Accra and their final destination. In addition, the passengers normally take two to three hours on that road which affects the economy. The completion of the road would boost economic growth and activities between Accra and the neighbouring regions as well as Ghana and other countries.

Infrastructure development is good but I don't think all this will achieve it's maximum aim . The way Greater Accra is structured is very bad , due to poor compliance by developers as well as institution responsible for supervising development . Ideally , Accra is the capital but Achimota , kasoa , Amasaman , Madina , Adenta etc should be cities on their own with every service at once disposal , with no need of travelling all the way to the city center (Accra) to seek services . Planning has been very poor in Accra , and I have observed gradual destruction of the planning implemented by Dr kwame Nkrumah during the development of Tema township . Current generation can't plan , the once left for us to copy from , they are also destroying it . What kind of generation of leaders have we had so far .

This is a good project but why don’t they make this road a motorway straight to Kumasi? Pokuase interchange, Suhum overpass... ok but we are still passing through towns and villages. If they start from A, let’s finish to Z. The Accra-Kumasi motorway, and then exit ramps to towns. In all Ghana, we have only one motorway, the Tema one!!
@KhoPhi
@KhoPhi 4 года назад
Ideally? yes. Practically and cost-wise? That's a whole different conversation. Accra to Kumasi is about 400km. You wanna do Tema Motorway grade road, from Accra to Kumasi? Guess, how much do you think such a project will cost? Just gimme a guess.
@heylson
@heylson 4 года назад
KhoPhi Accra Kumasi road distance is a bit over 250km; but it takes 4 hours by coach to reach Kumasi for 250km, there is a problem. This is because our road network is not good and such project has not been planned before, it is 2020 though. We are talking about connection between two big cities. I am pretty sure there will be a good return on investment. Accra Kumasi motorway could have a real impact on several areas, such as for instance the development of tourism, influx of foreign investments, less accidents (dual carriageway), regional development, better logistics flow etc...
@KhoPhi

You're right. It's about 250km. But still, such a project, how much do you think it'll cost?

It's seems to me that black people are addicted to infrastructure, something to be proud of. They think that a lack of infrastructure is the reason why their countries are poor. However, when you look at the history of the developed world you see something different. Countries of the developed world start to build infrastructure after they became industrialized, not before. The building of infrastructure before developing industries is one of the reasons why these countries are so indebted. The development never comes. When you study many of the developed countries you will find that many of their infrastructure was built by private companies (the railway in the U.S, for example), not the government; therefore, their was no cost to the taxpayer.

So, I think you're generally right in this. But in Africa we find ourselves caught in the middle a bit. We do have industry and are industrializing and have been for the past 50 years or so at varying degrees, depending the region or country you're looking at. For example, in Ghana we have had a very strong agricultural sector that produces almost 70% of the worlds output of Cocoa (in conjunction with Cote D'Ivoire our neighbor ) but we have been apparently stuck at manufacturing in the bottom end of the value chain and so earn 'peanuts' in revenues in comparison to the west for this commodity. This is generally the same structure you'll find across the continent (with the exception of South Africa perhaps). To scale up and move up the value chain we have needed much bigger systematic and sustained interventions by our governments backed by much larger capital inflows. But our private sectors have not been able to realise these sorts of balance sheets to drive this sort of industrialization drive. So many states and industries have been reliant on foreign capital. And they normally divest their capital away from Africa back to the west and not develop the value chain any further up, perhaps due to our governance structures not being strong enough too when they're here. So we have had a perpetual deficit of skills and financial capital to really sustain our fledgling industries. But I think we can say we're now seeing stronger economic leadership and creativity in the last say 25 years with a focus on more local equity, local content, local skills and participation rules in our FDIs, so some countries are pushing through. I'd say Rwanda, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia are among the new tigers pushing through and growing fast enough to industrialize sustainably. At least we can hope so, lol.

@@dan.S5050 I am sorry, but I disagree. There's no 50 years of development. Many Asian countries were poorer than African countries when they got independence in the 1960s-compare them now. Africans need to stop trying to reinvent the wheel and start working with the wheel. For the longest while smart people have been telling Africans to stop exporting raw materials yet they continue on this course, why? Ghana just signed a deal with China to swap bauxite for infrastructure development. China will use that bauxite to develop industries while Ghana will have underutilized infrastructure. Ghana has cocoa, but instead of having the chocolate companies come in and set up production they are bitching about cocoa price when any monkey can see that you're not going to get much from raw materials.

You're right, but only to some extent. I mean, without basic infrastructure, how do you develop industries? Because you need to invest in good road and rail networks to help the movement of goods and people as well as stable electricity, without which, any kind of development would be impossible. So whilst I do agree that mega infrastructures like skyscrapers should come after building strong industries, investing in road network now is a necessity rather than a luxury
