As the first capital of Poland, Gniezno was completely devastated during the Czech aggression in 1039 and hence this town was no longer able to fulfil the role of the Polish power centre... It was Cracow to take over the privilege of being the capital of Poland... The medieval old town of Gniezno has vanished completely (only the Archdiocese Cathedral remained until today)... The modern look of this city does not reflect the past... Nevertheless, Gniezno still is a symbol of Poland's origin and still is a good place to visit and remember the Polish history...
