The Polish-Soviet War took place from 1919 till 1921. You'll have these conflicts that almost nobody knows of. And then there are these conflicts that shaped the course of history and still nobody knows of. The Polish-Soviet War (1920) is one of them. If the Poles had failed, whole Europe might have been communist even before the outbreak of World War Two. In this video: the Polish-Soviet War in a nutshell.

I'm not really that old, 52 to be exact, and my grandfather fought in that war in the Polish artillery. Thank you for a very informative documentary!

He unfortunately died in 1938 but he is well remembered in our family history. He later became a captain in the Krakow police and, to his credit, refused an order to crack down on a peasant protest movement in his jurisdiction. We are from Galicia.

Your knowledge about Central and Eastern Europe is astonishing! I work in Munich as a religion teacher (here it's a ordinary school subject). I've noticed that in German sources the Polish-Soviet war is rarely mentioned. It's often portrayed as a local conflict, initiated by Poland, with the goal of conquering Russian territories. I'm impressed that the Dutch are much more objective. I wish you all the best. Keep up the good work!

My grandfather fought in that war. Before that he fought in the war between Japan and tsar-Russia. He survived the WWII and died of the natural causes when Poland was under the co-mmu-nist re-gime. His life was very tough.

Interesting video. There is a Polish film about those events "Battle of Warsaw 1920". I not sure if I would recommend it though. Despite the fact that it was one most expensive movies produced in Poland after 89' it was not acclaimed by the critics nor the viewers.
@HistoryHustle
@HistoryHustle 4 года назад
Thanks! Actually I've seen that movie. I did like the action scenes. The production value was great. The same goes for City 44. Yet, the movie itself wasn't that great. I still have to check on two newer Polish movies: Legiony (2019) and Pilsudski (2019).

@@HistoryHustle I think he means the Polish and Lithuanian Commonwealth. But those days are over and Poland is happy to be free and growing in properity. That's enough for any nation these days - or should be.

"Make Poland Great Again!" sure sounds like "Il Duda ha sempre ragione" or "Heil Duda". (By no means am I accusing Duda of being a fascist. This is more what Poland's little nationalist fanatics would say; thankfully it does not include a majority of Poles.) But sorry bud, by 2016 many moderate folks knew what MAGA meant. Then, January 6th 2021 made sure everyone knew what MAGA really meant, whether it's MAGA or MPGA or M*GA. If some of my students are reading this post, M*GA means that Nationalism is now more valuable than Democracy. This was confirmed when the oracle of the M*GA movement, Trump, prodded his little nationalist fanatics to try to overthrow US democracy on Jan 6. (It did include many fascists, but many nationalists were also dragged there.) Please understand: most M*GA folks aren't racist/fascists (even if the far left widely paints them this way.) However, it is a nationalist movement, and yes, it is led by deceitful fascists such as Trump. Those who proudly repeat slogans such as M*GA need to be called out. I must concede that I'm concerned that many nationalists (from the US or elsewhere) are increasingly moving to fascism...

Russian Noble general Alekei Brusilov joined the counter-offensive on Poland.

Proving that Russia has always been a menace to its neighbors; it's not just a problem of Soviet communism. There is a plaque in the city where I live (in central Ukraine) commemorating where brusilov lived during a brief stay here during the Polish-Soviet War. I've often said it should be taken down. Thanks partly to Brusilov's "success", the Russians were able to inflict genocide by mass starvation on the locals here a decade after, though thanks to the stubborn resistance of Pilsudski's forces (including many Ukrainians, my great grandfather among them), my family's home city of Ternopil was kept away from brutal Russian rule through that difficult period.

@@marcguindon8499 wow, thanks. I like the idea - a few people have suggested it to me - but, being in this situation, there's an emotional feeling that until I've done more (e.g fighting or getting injured) it's not my story to tell, not really my place to be the one to write books on it yet. But, I think, the war will be long, so, that might change.

Józef Piłsudski ( you-zeff, peewh-suds-ki ) that's the proper pronunciation. The 'wh' pronounced like the first sound from the word 'when'. Wikipedia may have a better one, but pronunciation of Polish is very often butchered so please do some extra research as sign of respect. Thank you for your videos just stumbled on them today and your subscriber amount doesn't do it justice! PS- Some of the videos on Poland are a little short given their magnitude.

Whites could actually get help from Poland at that time however Whites didn't wanted to recognize Independent Poland but just one of the Russia's state. That was out of the question for Poland and they didnt agree to combine forces.

I see! Actually it wasn't yet the Soviet Union, but Soviet Russia, since the USSR was established in 1922 after the Russian Civil War was over.

Please forgive me for being "whataboutist", but the Soviet defeat in Afghanistan eventually led to the bankruptcy/collapse of the USSR. It sure dwarfs the Polish resistance, but kudos to the brave Poles who stopped the military expansion of Communism. Let me put it this way: Poles saved Europe from Bolshevism. Afghanis provoked the collapse of the Bolshevism.
