Notes:
This is the Polaris 360 return side cleaner (non-booster pump) model. It works very well with the proper set-up. It has a very large debris opening which is great for a pool like the one in this video that is surrounded by trees. A suction side cleaner would not work well in this pool, since it has no side port connection and I would have to install a suction cleaner in the skimmer which would prove problematic.
To install this one, I had to actually plug up two of the return lines with 1 ½" threaded plugs (not included with the Polaris). It did have two restrictor eyeball inserts which is useful. If your pool doesn't have 1 ½" threaded return fittings, you can still install this cleaner but you will need to purchase rubber snub pipe inserts, then attach restrictors and the Polaris connector (prices range from $50-$70 for those parts).
So with that in mind, you need to restrict the other return jets enough to get the Polaris to move with sufficient wheel revolutions per minute (RPM). If I did not plug up two of the jets and restrict one other, this Polaris would not move. With the Spa bypass running I was able to generate 27 RPMs without cleaning or backwashing the filter which is a good enough speed to clean this pool.
If your pool fits this description, then the Polaris 360 may be right for you.
Troubleshooting tips:
Hose length is important. Too much hose and the cleaner will not work properly.
The Back-up Valve must be installed 14-20 inches from the cleaner and the water opening (where water shoots out of) must be facing the cleaner and not away from it. These valves tend to fail often. To know if it is working properly, lift it out of the water when the Polaris is running. If water is continuously shooting out and never stops, it has failed and you need a new one, otherwise the Polaris will not run.
The Quick Disconnect that attaches the Polaris to the wall also has an adjustment on it, make sure it is not all the way open or there will not be enough pressure. They tend to crack under the pressure so check it periodically to see if water is shooting out of it from a crack.
Sometimes when you clean the filter, some element will enter the Polaris return line. Simply disconnect the wall connector and clean out the small debris basket (looks like a Thimble).
If you find the Polaris on it's side in the bottom of the pool, the rear float has probably failed and is full of water. Simply remove it and install a new one. These are the most common problems you will have.
If the cleaner starts and runs for a few seconds then stops, then runs again and stops; check the skimmer basket & pump basket for debris (possibly low water too), if pool does not run the Polaris will not either since it works off the return water pressure. Clean or backwash filter in needed.
The manufacturer recommends Polaris Tail Sweep Pro Accessory if the Polaris tail is shooting water out of the pool. This will keep it from shooting out onto the deck.

I agree the the Polaris 180 & 280 are the best pressure side models out there. The problem with the 360 and 380 Polaris is the drive belt that wears out and the bearing placement. The 280 (180) with the drive shaft design last forever and run with no issues for a long, long time. I have three Polaris 180s on my route, all over 25 years old and still working fine. The redesigned Kreepy Legend is much improved over the Letro Legend cleaner. But the Polaris 280 is the winner in my book also.

It can be a bit challenging to do but what I do is get a razor blade and kinda cut a starter thread in the hose at a slight angle. Kind of like how a regular sharp ended screw looks or how a threaded plug on the first thread. I find it harder to thread them in when the hose section is just flush. Try that and see if that works.

I just finished installing my new 360 and wanted to mention a couple things... I was not able to pull off the tester so we cut it off. Your video skipped that part, just showed you connecting the hose end to the feed pipe. 2) You mention "weights" and the ones on my hose are "floats" made of foam rubber. Also, anyone wondering if you can run the 360 on a designated booster pump, yes. The pressure relief is bypassing a little though. Thanks for all your videos, they've always been informative and helpful. Cheers!

I don't use the flow tester - to me it is pretty much useless. I just close off return jets or reduce them to get the proper wheel RPM. Yeah they are "floats" - I misspoke ;). Thanks for watching.

This might help someone out. My Polaris 380 had stopped moving and I discovered that wheels were locked up but when the backup valve kicked in, I could spin the wheels easily (and they were all geared together, so no belts or gears seemed to be broken). I opened it up (dreading buying another rebuild kit) and found an easy fix. All five zip ties that had secured the hose couplings had broken off - they were rattling around in the gear box and locking up the wheels. I replaced the zip ties and bingo - right back in business. It was a welcome, easy and cheap fix.

- the walls. I think that most people become unhappy with the robot dolphin cleaner over time. Some have complained about the internal motor burning out. Others just say it doesn't clean very well. It is bulky. The Polaris I think will have a longer life span over the robot cleaner. It will go higher on the walls too. I would go with the Polaris. My neighbor is a manager at Leslie's and the corporate pushes the Dolphin Robot cleaners - he is still not sure why himself. They do work though.

If you want to invest the money in a Polaris w/ booster pump I would go that route. You will need a separate time clock if you don't have an Automated system to run the booster pump for 2 hours a day. Booster pump installed ($650), timer if need ($250) and the Polaris cleaner -$450 for the 280 which is a good Polaris and $650 for the 380. If you have the money I would go that route. For the 360 you would plug 2 jets & restrict one.
@SPL
@SPL 11 лет назад
I assume your pool has the standard 3 return jets with threaded fittings. If so you will not need the pre-plumbed return jet that was installed for a Polaris w/ booster pump. I also assume there is a valve that is "off" closing that return line at present. The Polaris 360 will work fine if you plug off one of the three return jets, and restrict the other with the jet insert that comes with the cleaner. the 3/4 line is made just for the Polaris with booster pumps and should not be used w/ the 360

Back pressure is normal as you are restricting flow to get the 360 moving. The skimmer should still be at full stenght as the return pressure shouldn't effect it. A minor drawback of the 360 is that by restricting the return jets, debris is not pushed around the pool well and skimmed out. You just need to skim the surface a bit more often with your net. It does a great job on the bottom though. 10 psi of back pressure is normal.

Hello, I've watched many of your videos. I really appreciate all of the hard work you have put in to them. I have an 18x36 vinyl liner with a salt system. I have three questions. 1. I'm on a budget and want an auto cleaning pool cleaner. I was trying to stay closest to 300. In your reviews you are positive about so many. I have many leaves and acorns. Can you suggest 1 that I will be happy with? 2. I just installed a timer on my pump. What do you think is the best cycle and amount of time it needs to run? I've been running 24/7 to this point. 3. I have some wrinkles in the bottom of my liner from a high water table and low water in the pool. Is there anything I can do without draining the pool? They are all in the shallow end.
@SPL
@SPL 11 лет назад
I think the Polaris will do a better job cleaning the pool. The robot is bulky and requires you to turn it on manually every time you use it. As far as cheaper to run - maybe. However, you can set your pool timer down by two hours to offset the Polaris two hour run time and it will cost you nothing to run the Polaris. I have a Polaris in a fiberglass pool and it does really well. The tail sweep will help with steps, but you will still need to brush them off. Robot does not do steps or climb -

If you look at the video on m Channel "Polaris 360 Is Not Moving (Adjusting RPM)" you will see the plug that I use. It is a black rubber piece with a white nut that you tighten in place with a wrench. I have one of those in a pool and it has been fine for the last 6 months or so. That is the only way I know of closing off no threaded pipes. If you look at the Polaris 360 PDF manual online you will see the plugs that Polaris sells and recommends. Let me know if that helped.

I love how you removed the pressure tester without showing how you did it. That's what I'm having trouble with. I got the nut off. Do I just tug until it comes out? Any tips? (It obviously was not super easy since there was a cut in the video. :-)

It's my life nemesis, but I think the entire design of the filtration system contributes. We have many more trees than these folks, and a very large paper cylinder filter (as opposed to sand), which may be the inherent problem. Anyway, the tiny hose filter to the Polaris gets clogged within hours, whether or not the main filter components have been clean, and when it does, Mr. P is done for good. But even in the short window that it's "running" it's as ineffective as one could possibly imagine, patching out for 10 minutes wedged against the stairs, or more likely never leaving the deep end, making the same six feet lap, ignoring the leaves that slowly migrate back to the suction vents on the bottom, waiting to be fished out by my net. Just for spite it will occasionally flop on its face or just wheely over the leaves, picking up not one. Then ya got the bags, oh, the bags, whose velcro wears out after you open them twice, so you gotta fit whatever's in there (don't worry, it ain't much) thru the hole so as never disturb the velcro. One cannot fathom a more inefficient, pitiful system the combination of my pool and the Polaris 360. Just looked at it --it's now down to .000001 mph, so that's it for today, folks. If you have any advice for a better cleaner with my paper filter, I and your viewing audience would be much appreciative.

i bought a 360 today off of craiglist. since my pool was built by hayward, i dont know if it has a different piping or something, i bought the white quick disconnect, it fits on the polaris just fine, but when i try to fit it on one of the jets, its like the same size of it! knowing the water is to cold! brrrr, its hard to keep your hands in the pool for to long! idk if i am doing something wrong. thanks for making pool cleaner videos, its very helpful on youtube! :)

+Sarah Abdo That is pretty odd. If it is a threaded return it should be the standard 1 1/2" size. Yes, you don't want to mess with it in the Winter.

idk what should i do. just wondering are all the jets different? and my polaris doesnt have the front clip on the pipe itself, does that mean i have to buy another part of the polaris? Thanks for the advice. The pressure side line is capped off/not connected to the system. Contractor left a gap in plumbing for adding the booster pump. I have 4 returns, if I go with 360, would I have to close off 2 returns and restrict another, and connect the 360 to the 4th? If I go with 380 or 3900 and pump, would I leave all 4 returns open as they are now so I get full "skimming" PLUS vacuum at same time? Thanks!!!! You are very helpful to this pool maintenance rookie.

Thanks for the video. Very helpful. One question-We installed the Polaris 360 this weekend. However, I am not sure if it is running the way it should. We have 3 returns and a rainfall. We reduced the flow to two of the jets and installed the Polaris on the other. The Polaris itself is working fine. The issue is that when the Polaris is running in the pool, the pressure on the filter gauge is up to about 18 or 19 psi (up about 10 psi) and not much is drawn into the skimmer. Is this normal?

Hope you had a great holiday-another cleaner question-I priced out Polaris 280 w/pump, install from Leslie's Pool Supply-the guy appeared very knowledgable, recommended the Dolphin Deluxe 4 robotic cleaner (built by Maytronics). Says for a bit less than Polaris, cheaper operating costs, it will do a better cleaning job. Any experience with this robotic cleaner? Any thoughts to help me make a decision? Fiberglass pool w/ salt system. Climb walls? Expect to clean steps and bench area?

I have a 18k gallon pool with a 3/4 hp pump and a DE filter. I only have one skimmer and one return. This particular pool is at a rental property so I'm trying to reduce the amount of time I spend in maintaining it. I currently have a the Poolvernuegen PoolCleaner that I hook up to the skimmer. I was considering replacing it with a Polaris 360 so I can free up my skimmer while still having an auto cleaner. My concern is that the Polaris 360 won't be able to pick up smaller debri like PoolCleaner and may be harder to repair. Should I keep the Poolvernuegen or but the Polaris 360?
@SPL
@SPL 4 года назад
The main drawback is the single return line. It also would not pick up the fine dirt. There are a few things you can do around the pool area to keep the pool cleaner like trimming or cutting down messy trees. That goes along way.

My Polaris Pool Sweep is causing my inground pool liner to puff up under the liner walls in few couple places, quite large spots, one around the pool sweep connection and on the opposite side of the pool. It starts the puffing or maybe it's water behind the liner after running the sweep 30 minutes. I stopped using it and the puffing behind the liner went down but is loose in another area on the wall about a foot below the pool water edge I can feel a hard rigged horizontal ridge approx 3 feet in lenghth. I am have to stop using my Polaris Pool Sweep and manually vacumn my pool. My pool repair comany came out couldn't figure out the problem. Now they want to send a leak detector company and possibly jack hammer my pool cement decking. I watched your video and think there is a problem with the sweep fitting or some other part on it. Any suggestions ?

My Polaris 280 has never gone in to the shallow corner or deep corner of pool on the opposite side of the pool from the return line in the wall. I have a 20 by 40 foot rectangle pool. My pool is 15 years old and I replaced the vinyl liner 5 years ago. What I see happening is the Polaris looks like it will get there and then it is pulled by the hose so it turns about 45 degrees from riding square on the bottom and circles away from those corners on two wheels while tilted. the combination of the feed hose and leader hose are long enough to just reach these far corners and no extra. I just bought a new 10 ft section of hose and am thinking about making the hose longer by well past the instructed 6 inches and see what happens. Any advice will be much appreciated.
@SPL
@SPL 9 лет назад
Bill Helfen Yes, in some cases a longer feed hose is needed. Adding some hose so it comes out of the pool by a couple of feet at the furthest point should solve that problem.

Hi! I have a 360 I recently replaced the water management base assembly. Now the 360 tends to ride around with the front wheel about an inch of the pool floor. Also it tends to sway over, not completely laying on its side but leaning towards the two wheel side. Also the tail is not whipping around even though I have the adjustment screw all the way open. I checked the main float on the 360 but it is not retaining water and appears to be functioning properly. Do you have any tips? Thanks!!!

MrDgvb1-As always, thanks for your time and tips. Thinking about new cleaner; going from suction Navigator (thru skimmer box) to pressure Polaris 360 (no pump). I am plumbed for pressure cleaner, but contractor left me with 3/4" outlets/inlets (currently plugged off) for booster pump. If I get 360, can I simply bridge the gap with 3/4 PVC? Return lines are 2" before and after this section; will 3/4" provide enough pressure to operate cleaner? Other thoughts concerns you might have?

Thanks for the feedback! The unit should last for several years or more. Figure a good 10 plus years. I rarely replace the entire unit. After about 5-6 years a complete tune up kit will replace all the internal parts such as bearings and bands. The only parts that really go bad are the hoses. I change them when they crack. Figure to lose one section every year or so. These are really made to last a very long time. Basically the thing to look for is if it starts to move slowly. 👍

Thanks for the reply! Re the hose swivels, I have some water leaking where the nut tightens onto the hose. In your experience is that due to the swivel itself, a bad nut or the hose not being cut straight? The cut looks pretty good but not sure what to think since the leak is not at the middle of the swivel. Thanks!
@jfaz
@jfaz 6 лет назад
One other thing, I realized way to much pressure going to the 360! Over 41 RPMS! Is it better to turn down the variable-speed pump, install a restrictor in the wall where the 360 hose connects or mess with the diverter near the pump? turning down the pressure somehow may help the issue with leaking fittings!
@SPL

What if your Polaris doesn't back up? It gets stuck in corners or by the steps. What to do? :(

I am thinking about moving on from the 360 once mine needs additional repair and parts. What suction pool cleaner would you recommend for hookup through skimmer with your hole in one basket? Also do I need do do anything to the return line if I go to a suction cleaner? Thanks,

Depends on your pool surface type and pool size. Maybe email me a photo.

My sister gave me a polaris pool pump she was not using since she no langer has a pool. I do not have a second pool pump. Can I connect the polaris to my current pump somehow?

It depends on what Polaris model she gave you. The Polaris 360 will work in a pool without a separate booster pump, all other models require a booster pump. Do you know what Polaris model she gave you? Does it have thin hoses or a wide hose like the cleaner in this video?

Hey Man this is Top Notch Info, Thank you for all you are doing. I really want to buy a pool cleaner. My Pool is 22x32. the main problem is leafs and sand or dirt in the bottom of the pool. what would you recommend? I don't really want to buy a booster pump, so that should narrow down the options. I need something to scrub, pick up leafs and dirt. Please Your input is greatly appreciated.

I'm gonna have trouble answering you since I am A Philadelphia Eagles fan ;). It really depends on the actual amount of debris you get and if your pool has a dedicated side port for a suction cleaner. If you have 1.5 inch threaded return lines then you might want to consider the Polaris 360. They work exceptionally well. About how dirty does your pool get each week? What kind of trees surround the pool? There a couple of good suction cleaners also. With more details I can help narrow it down for you. I installed two Polaris 360 about 2 years ago and haven't had to change any parts yet. The Poolvergnuegen also is easy on parts. just the rubber tires every year or two.

I am having trouble with 360 it is brand new and seems to float or up on front wheels most of the time. Any suggestions?

Make sure the jet on back is pointed straight out. Also if there is air in the return lines the cleaner will float. How are the wheel RPM?

bay area california. i also have two pools that have them. not a fan of them at all. wish every pool had the 280 with booster. not a fan of the legends either.

I would not recommend using a pool cleaner that requires reducing the circulation of the water. My neighbor got one of these and the installer essentially capped the wall returns which led to an over-pressure condition on the cleaner line that needs to have a relief valve open. This is hardly a good solution.

Try to use the Pool'N Brush to replace the good old fashioned sponge scrubber. It works well and much much more efficient! web site: www.poolnbrush.com

Also, the RPM is about 28-30.

Check the screen in the wall for debris.
