Poldark/Elizabeth/Demelza/Hugh - Secrets 

Thanks for your comment, I so totally agree with you. I have been looking through the different RU-vid posts and what I noticed was that people only think of Ross’s one indiscretion that May evening. Demelza, during her married life and even after Elizabeth’s death, suffered betrayals and abandonment from Ross - a trifecta of mental abuse (how many times did he come close to facing the noose); emotional abuse/neglect (and by extension inflicted by Elizabeth as well); financial poverty/uncertainty because of Ross’s stupid choices and recklessness. Thank you. Your thoughts made the most sense to me. Stupid Ross was so blind he couldn’t see that Elizabeth was a self-centred manipulator who played him.

@@violetacalayan8410 I agree with both of you ladies. I loved the books and Winston's words but this screen adaptation was sorely lacking. When Ross came back from London and asked "will we ever laugh again?". I could not remember hardly any scenes when they were laughing together. Maybe it's me. When Ross said he found his STAR in a dogfight, I thought...when did he ever treat her like a STAR? I guess we were to assume there were good times. I'm older and maybe it's me but while the entire cast was phenomenal this adaptation for me was a brain-f#$&! Im sorry. I don't use that word casually but it seemed the one that expressed my feelings best. I found myself saying time after time....this is a good reason to leave him Demelza. One of the producers said that Aidan has such charisma that you forgive him....not me! Lol

@@omagosh5137 In my book, Demelza would leave Ross, not because of the betrayals and disrespect, but because Ross was blind to the true beauty of Demelza’s soul. He did not deserve her. Demelza was born to survive; she and Jeremy would have been fine. Besides Verity and Captain Blamey would not abandon them. Because of the loss of the strong home foundation which Demelza provided, Ross would go the way of his father - in my never be humble fantasy 🙂

@@violetacalayan8410 have you tried to look at it from Ross’s side? Did we ever wonder what going off to war did to him? He almost died… How was his character before he left so abruptly? Why was he so involved in his work and was quick to go back into harms way? Why was he constantly drowning himself in liquor, by himself, allow Demelza to dance and carry on at this get together? Remember what these events were for… frolicking, allowing men to woo the women no matter single or married. This was a lifestyle Ross despised. Ross had many issues but he did question “love” at every turn. I didn’t like how he treated Demelza, but there is more to it than meets the eye.

Hugh was a predator… to pursue a married woman, regardless of attraction shows he wasn’t a man of honor or a gentleman. Playing on a woman’s emotion to gain leverage shows how weak and how low stoop. People say it was “love at first sight!” when it comes to one being married one should have withdrawn his own desires. “Be a man, not a snake.” What irony that was when at Hugh’s party that they referred to the Garden of Eden. That said more in that exchange about his character.

@@williammalone133 Yes William, but its Demelza here who also played a part, only not intentional. She was very lonely in her heart cause Ross was neglecting her and got herself infatuated with Hugh knowing he was dying. If Ross had been more present and not be dwelling in his love fo Elizabeth he could have resqued his wife out of Hugh's hungry hands. It was just a moment and lucky for all it didn't cause a scandal. Only Ross was shaken for a while, Demelza lifted her shoulders and went on with her life and Ross and her children.

@@limelight1397 let’s dive into Ross’s issues. First question, have you ever been taken for dead and everything was take away from you, even the love of your life? Second question, have you ever been around someone with PTSD? He has every system down to a tee. Finally question, Ross’s self esteem always questioning love, even if he was deserving of it… I understand why Demelza did what she did with Hugh, but she loved Ross unconditionally. Why was Hugh not so relevant? Her undying love for Ross. She allowed for her fling with hugh to happen and reasons for it abound. I honest.y believe it was to show Ross, who finally paid attention, she was desirable to others and he should cherish her. I’ve been married for over 20 yrs and Hugh’s interaction would’ve never taken place. I believe Ross would’ve stopped it if it continued. That’s what Demelza wanted anyway, him to see what was going on and fight for her.

@@williammalone133 To begin with the last issue; Demelza had the fling with Hugh because he touched feelings in her she never knew before but the whole relationship with Hugh did end up in disappointment. What Hugh did to Ross by the way in this is a bad taste in the mouth. As for Ross, I understand he was devestated of the whole situation. He had lost Elizabeth (1eq) and could not trust his wife. Had Ross PSTD? When Ross came back after being a captain in the army, he had suffer great loss but managed to build back better his legacy in a fast way and connected easy with the people who worked on his land. He had a busy social life and Demelza had to adjust. So far my answer for now. You made me a difficult one. Let see how far I can come. I'm married too, with a very understanding husband. Its been a while since I've discussed Poldark. I was reading some comments and had to come in.

@@limelight1397 I do understand. When speaking of Demelza, we are speaking the same language. As for Ross, his constant business is another classic symptom of PTSD. Keeping busy helps keep your mind off things. I’m living with this disorder and know first hand. Men who live it don’t know they’re doing it and don’t want others to tell them either. Like I said before it doesn’t excuse his behavior with Demelza.

Was love…it was lust plan and simple. I also think that Ross wouldn’t have continued to sit ideally by and watch the escapade continue.

Nah. Hugh was a balm for her broken heart and her pride but Ross was her one true love. I think Hugh would've been v unhappy had they got married. It would be another version of Ross and Elizabeth!

Hugh is the serpent in the garden. How low is the man that seduces and sleeps with the wife of the man who risks his life to save yours. Hugh is a lowlife.....Hugh did not love Demelza, he lusted after her and played on her naivety. He pursues her while smiling and interacting with Ross, like a snake.

yeph. Kharma is such an interesting thing isn't it? I am not proud to admit that Ross deserved that one. And looky here how hurt and worried he was. Hmm, double standard anyone? He can't blame Demelza for being angry, hurt pride bla bla bla? Well I guess he also can't blame Demelza for what she ended up doing, even though it wasn't for payback or planned / on purpose.
