Was there 1986. Returned in 1993 for detective training. Retired as DI in 2014. Had a blast.

Stumbled across this, what a great find. I joined in 1973 assigned to Rowan house. Sergeant Pether was a top bloke, I was shit at drill and he helped me out in his own time, I was still shit but the man tried. I believe he come to the fore when the previous incumbent Sergeant George (Ill stick a bee under your foreskin) retired he was a decent man.

Can’t believe they binned the attachment to police stations, to me that was by far the best moments and most fun I had as a cadet. My ‘A’ stage posting was for 6 months at Battersea police station, early 80’s. Agree with all the other comments, Sgt George Pether is a cadet legend, and shaped us all into future police officers.

Believe it! They did not want impressionable young cadets exposed to experienced police officers. They might have picked up some bad habits! I had four months attached to "C"-relief at Fulham, ("F.F.") and learned a great deal in a short time. Moreover, by the time that I went to Training School, I had a pretty good idea that this was the job for me. The guys in this film never had that advantage.

What a fantastic find! I believe this intake was 1/84 who joined in January 1984. I was in 2/84 which did have more diversity and about 10 girls!

I was in the huge intake of Sept 75. Rowan House with Sgt Derek Kerr and Sgt Bishop. Insp Woodhead was in charge. Sgt Bailey was the drill sergeant ex Guardsman. Voice that could be heard for miles and all the classic jokes like am I hurting you, lad? I should be I'm treadin' on your hair!! I'm not sure but think Sgt Pether was his deputy. I then went down to Sunbury Cadet Center before returning to the main school for my 16 weeks of training in April 1975. What an experience it all was.

Anyone who did the two year course knows that it was the closest thing any poor kid could have got to a Public School type of education. The breadth of the course was extraordinary. They really should have used this model for an Officer Class type of education rather than employ the new Social Worker types with degrees for the accelerated promotion scheme. The moment the ‘management’ went political, policing was lost in my honest opinion. In the old days a Superintendent sitting in the back of the RT car for a Night Shift patrol could be relied upon to help out in a sticky situation, but by the end they were stuck in their offices begging local community ‘leaders/ agitators’ not to make complaints, and now they’d sell out any of their honest and hard working officers to save their own necks or simply to appease.

MPCC. All gone, all demolished, all sold off for development. Thank you, the Mayor of London and successive governments, for your budget cuts! Nice to see P.S. Pether. Had the other drill sergeant of my era, P.S. Anscombe, retired by the time this was filmed? Probably. It is all beginning to seem like another world. Cadet 26848, course A2/77

Trying to figure if I remember you, Sept '76 intake, Rowan Hse.

@@jfk9996 Possibly. I started a year later than you, September 1977, Fielding House, then to Sunbury, CTC1, then to the other end of the Hendon estate in May 1979. We may have been at Hendon Cadet School at the same time, as your intake was so big that the other centres could not take you all at once, so we had a large number of "Fourth Termers" for over two months. They were the youngest of the previous year's intake. I remember that they all left for Sunbury, Wanstead or Norwood on 28th November 1977.

@@robbierobson3251 I left the CS in July 77 then onto Norwood so I wouldn't have known you. I agree with you it's sad that the CS has been demolished, almost like a section of your memory has been erased! I was a member of the drum corp at the CS led by George Pether. I have to say in my entire life's experience he was one of the most grounded and respectful people I had the privilege to know. BTW I am dismayed and saddened by the quality of police now, I'd bet PS Pether would be turning in his grave.

@@jfk9996 I agree with your observations. Even when this video was made, the attachment to police stations had been discontinued. They didn't want those young cadets influenced by police officers, did they? My attachment to Fulham (FF, now demolished) was probably the best part of my cadetship. Police officers are so different today. You need a degree, no matter in what subject, just to get in. All you ever needed was a degree of common sense and intelligence. Few want to make it a career, now 35 years minimum for a devalued pension, just a stepping stone to other things. Of those I knew in the Job, only one remains, with nine years service, demoralised, and keen to leave as soon as possible! That is the saddest bit of all.
@jfk9996

@@robbierobson3251 Agree also, it seems to me that they just want to play act but aren't interested in real police work. I finished my time as a DC in the pan borough CSU in Lambeth. How many want to do all those dull detective type jobs such as mind numbing surveillance, trawling through CCTV, hours of shoe leather knocking on doors with your MG11s, waiting in pot stinking custody suites for an over-paid, petulant brief who will make it their life's ambition to tear apart your evidence. Are they now just diversity compliance wardens?
