Police Car Features Your Car Doesn’t Have 🚨 

It makes me happy that there's a center console in it now.

My old car had a column shift and I miss it so much. She died of old age and worked like a beast untill her last breath.

I drove cabs for 6 years and we used a lot of old Ford Crown Vic police cars. They had better brakes, suspension and engines and handled better than the Mercury version of the same platform. They made great cabs. I especially enjoyed the ones with the search light still on them, you can really find an address with them.

It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it's got cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas.

I've had several cop cars, my first was a 1970 Dodge Polara. It had the plate on the core support that stated. High Speed Pursuit package. It had the 375 HP 440 and 2:73 gears, it shifted into second at 72 and third at 110 and would wind right past 140 and I measured the distance and marked it past 140 to 155, it would run 152 all day long if I came up on a hill it might slow down to 140 and down the hill, I'd be guess 160. That one had a big glob of Bondo covering a bullet hole, I picked all the Bondo out and rattle canned the bare metal. I loved that bullet hole!

bro forgot to mention the 500,000+ engine idle hours, and how hard these cars are driven.

I had an ex-highway patrol car in Australia, it had an extra light above the speedo that was always on, so they could speed match vehicles at night with their lights off, sneaky.

For many cars you can also notice the dash is thicker along with the a pillar trim in order to compensate for all the extra electrical stuff. Many models also have air funnels for the brakes to keep them cool under hard and excessive braking so they don’t loose grip or response time

i have a 2020 retired police charger. specify one from the iowa highway patrol. there are alot of features that are on some police charger and not on others based on the way that the police agency ordered the car. so for example i dont have a bar under my rear bumper for towing the car. i also don't have the back door child lock. it is cool to mention that getting a cop charger is the only way to get a v8 charger with AWD. except a very specific model year that happened to have it.

It also has a reinforced front end to conduct PIT maneuvers. Great for deer impacts, not so much for head on collision.

If that’s the hemi. That’s also the only way you can get the 5.7 and awd in that body style. It was around for a bit in the previous gen, but in my opinion this generation looks a million times better

Take a look under the front door trim. Some came equipped with Kevlar ballistic panels in the front doors to offer a little extra protection against small arms fire over just the standard door. It's meant mostly to protect the officer's legs when (s)he's standing up behind the door (their vest is still protects the torso).

The column shufter is for muscle memory too. When things go sideways the last thing you want to be doing is fumbling for gears.

The column shifter is also in these as well as Explorer Interceptors too because many police officers that have worked for a while may have used Ford Crown Victorias, which came with column shifters from the factory.

My 2016 Caprice ppv has 17000 hours on it and 11000 of those are idle hours

My Mercedes-Benz also has a Column shifter or at least it’s similar. But it’s electronically controlled which makes it so simple to use.

I once had a Pursuit Dodge Intrepid that had the same modifications. Wonderful car. Man I miss it.

Don’t forget the vinyl floor covering, which makes it easy to hose out that busy back seat

I had an old decommisioned crown victoria cruiser. That thing was a beast, and had the most trunk space of any vehicle I've ever seen. Even still had the kevlar trunk pack for transporting weapons without blowing the car up

I like the shifter up behind the wheel like that. My work truck is a 2500hd and 3500hd Chevy and I'm always reaching for it even in my bmw or jeep😅 that'd be a options I'd pick if I could. ❤

My 2011 Chevy Impala LT does have the colum shifter actually lol. The original owner that I bought it from paid the dealership to have the bench seat option installed so I have a bench in the front like older cars and the column shifter. Love my car.

The chargers also have a lock out feature, called secure park. if someone tried to steal it while it’s running and that system enabled they would be unable to get the car to get it into gear

I love my column shifter. It's also easier to play with when I'm not sitting. Wtf I don't remember why I liked that. It's gonna be a year since I've been in it soon.

The Pursuit Model gets excellent gas mileage on the highway.

I love my police package charger. It deserved a new life. Great video my 2009 column shift is a 5 speed as opposed to most that are 4 speed.

Also, don't forget your keys. The doors lock behind you when you close them...at least on the Crown Vics (Interceptors).

Tire wear slowly but constantly changes tire diameter. the speedometer reading is a function of tire diameter and revolutions per a unit of time. So the reading constantly changes with wear no matter what a dash label says.

also, in a fire engine in the uk, there's a another way to open the door if you don't have the key

I just bought a 14 Explorer, and I totally hate the center column shifter. I miss my Crown Vic with the separate dash and bench seats.

The speedo certification is supposed to be checked periodically and if appears digital will disappear until re certified

you almost got it right on the shifter. they actually run the column shifters so that they can more efficiently throw it in park when they have to bail out for any reason.

Consumer cars also used to have that rear door locking feature for rear doors. It was a child locking feature.

The other reason. For the column shifter is because most officers have been trained with column shifters. So switching it up would mess with there head and in high risk situations it's better too have that muscle memory.

You forgot about the beefed up suspension, no governor chip so you get all the ponies, and a heavy duty transmission meant to take more abuse! They are amazing fun cars, enjoy!

The red/white light thing used to be normal. Most of the vehicles I had when I was younger had that feature. Although a volvo I had was white/blue and the blue killed your eyes just as bad and made it worthless.

It’s insane that you can technically be cited for even 1 or 2 over the speed limit, but your car might just be telling you the wrong speed

The Certified Speedometer is only certified with new tires. Once the tires start wearing the speed will indicate that the vehicle is going faster than it is going by 1 to 2 miles per hour.

Column shift is also done for the ease of doing J turns

I believe they also have a better ring and pinion, allowing them to get more mph quicker.

Old highway patrol units had a way to pump fuel to someone who had run out and gotten stranded.

fun fact . u cant realy have a speedometer wich shows ur actual speed , cuz ur speed gets measured by sensors at ur wheels or on the gearbox ... and that means everytime u loose material on ur tyres ur speedometer shows u a different speed . for example the car at my company shows 145 kmh but the gps shows only 130 kmh

Unfortunately my town has a few of those with a very illegal tint(at least for civilians) and the words police in barely perceptible color,(like LITERALLY ONE shade or tint difference from the black or white paint)

They got blue state cop and silver ones the blue is super custom also SUVs at this place near by went and look recently, they have plug ins in the center for everything also 4 wheel drive.

had a crown vic from jack co tx was 1999 had pit bumper full cage and hyper chip was not taken out also had polive siren kit still in it front lights had to be coverd wish i still had it had people slowing down cause it still had the 3 areals on the trunk

I had a 6 seat ex police Ford EB Falcon that had the 4 speed column shift pursuit box here in Australia still got it down the paddock on a rock but guessing it's purpose here on Queensland is a raid car or quick team response vehicle to have bench seats front and back

I’ve checked their so called “certified” speedometers on multiple cruisers. All are off. Either reading a little high or a little low. I’ve seen a couple off by almost 10mph.

column shifters need to come back, the center console sticks are just big bulky and a waste of space just for the "Feel" of a stick in the middle, they are literally choosing the worse option. Column shifters would allow for nicer more useful and better designed center consoles which people would enjoy far more in the long run.

That speedometer is only certified to be correct as long as you keep getting it recalibrated every so often and recertified.

Bizarre? More like optional on the special pursuit models. And most really odd options are installed in house at the state garages...

Speedometers are usually very accurate, according to the CAN data sent to the cluster. No speedometer is ever always accurate, as they can be affected by tyre wear, etc.

Collum shifter reminds me of the Trabant 601

You could get a ZAutomotive Tazer and do a full unlock and try light show and you might have some “special features” left over from when it was still active 😉 Allegedly

Extremely high run time add that to your miles after calibrating run time - miles 100k likely got 150k or so give or take slightly extra. Honestly not bad though hemis can and will run run run just keep up with her and she'll keep up with you for a while.

Cruisers have come a long way since my 1997 retirement.
