I'm a black man. In 1994, fed up of constantly being pulled over by the cops in the car, I was pulled over by one of the most empathetic white police officers. I gave him so much attitude and he simply told me, "take it easy." No ticket nor drama nor stupid prying questions. I realised that the same way I had been profiled by "them" , I started doing the same thing to "them" and my behaviour reflected that. I had dehumanized officers and that wasn't fair to them. I had become the intolerance that I had been recieving. Years went by and I still got pulled over because that's how Oakland was / is but I decided to change how I behaved and what I thought and most of all, reciprocating the profiling that I hated so much.
I'm a white female in the harbor area of Los Angeles. I've been pulled over for obvious violations, tags expired, speeding, California stop, and also because there was an accident near my home so horrific, they blocked the streets so no one would have to see it. The officer detouring drivers was the kindest and yet the worst. He told me the conditions, yet asked me what I was doing up at 3am in the morning. I was literally coming home from work. My mind went to many places. Did he think I was an addict, a sex worker. Being judged by one man who has so much more authority is debilitating because the outcome is so uncertain.
I'm 71 and a former Marine, Vietnam era. My Father, of blessed memory, served in Korea. We were both "grunts". He never talked about the War except to say he was 19 and scared. After he passed away I found a Purple Heart among his things and a handful of pictures of friends he had lost there. He never talked about it. I understood. Jocko's epiphany can only come from a man whose revelation comes from his direct experience. Unfortunately the grief we call this modern life makes most of us "a few fries short of a Happy meal". "ALL THE PEOPLE" are divided in a manner that requires a lot of work to fix.
Evo Shift you should feel very lucky that Black people want equality and not revenge. Tell me what these “proven” lies are and we can have a conversation.
just because someone is human does not mean they are innocent. humans can do unspeakably evil things. pol pot. che guevara. mao. and yes, black lives matter, antifa, and out of control cops. the aspirations of evil people are not something i really want to tolerate or enable
I a former marine Jocko, remember watching a movie with this scene in. It was very heartwarming and actually almost brought tears to my eyes. It definitely shows the humanity people can have even under the most dire situations. Oh btw your way of telling a story or reading is awesome. You should do an audiobook. Thank you for your service in our great military brother🇺🇸!!
This made me tear up, because it's the truth. I was raised up with these values and it breaks my heart that there are people who were not. My heart goes to all people who are brave enough to love your fellow man. Stay strong and be brave.
This is what is meant when we say the fathers are missing from the inner city. How do you control wild young men who have no wisdom, and don't consider the consequences of their actions? For Jocko, this is no problem. Young men/boys need older men to keep them in line and to demonstrate what being a man is all about
@@ludwigvonmiseswasright4380 And there's people that claim families are a patriarchal concept. Look, it doesn't matter how you do it, but children need a firm hand and a nurturer to guide them. Mother/father works pretty well as proven by evolution, but if you have a better way then have at it. Just be there for your children and make it work with your partner. Put your ego aside for your child. They need you.
what a load of B.S. Did you not see the cops body slam an innocent female protestor breaking her shoulder, or the cops tasing the Atlanta students in their car, smashing their windows throwing them on the floor, breaking wrists, ribs and lacerating skin? This is not that protestors dont see cops etc as humans. The issue is the SYSTEM of govt, economy, judiciary, and MILITARISED cops in Full Protective, Armed gear are not HUMAN, they are a machine of oppression. What happened to your constitution and right to peaceful assembly? Why was George Floyd killed? and Tamir Rice? You and this trash video of yours are a JOKE.

I am Portuguese and i think your message is one of the most beautiful, inspiring and insightful I've seen in a long time, in a time of distress all around the world, not just for the U.S. brothers but for all humanity's brotherhood, a message of love and understanding, if we all could be that honest and straight has you been shown to us, we would have world peace. Please Jocko keep showing to the world the way to peace and brotherhood, i appreciate your message an thank you for your hard work.

Love from Seattle. If you want hope, look to what we all did on Wednesday. After two days of fighting, tear gassing and harsh words, the protesters and police were able to have a night of relative peace. How? We talked with eachother, we lived next to eachother, and we saw one another.
same in LA, was there to see the violent cops on saturday behaving much different than on tuesday and thursday; with the national guard here the power-abusing cops are not so quick to violate the constitution and attack protestors Maybe yall boy trump not as smart as yall think, he may very well send in the military but that does not mean those soldiers are psycho like trump or power-hungry high school bullies like the police, they are just young adults like me sent in with no choice they will not fire live rounds upon citizens just to satisfy trumps fantasies of tryanny and dictatorship
“Yes they’re angry and frustrated and scared and tired and fed up and aggravated. They’re full of potential, and they are deeply flawed. In other words, they are a person. Just like you. Please remember that.” Timeless words that couldn’t be more relevant now.
"He looked just like me... he looked just like me..." - my grandfather, on his deathbed, describing the German soldier he killed with his bayonet after D-Day

You should read Abraham Lincolns only recently released diaries. Views on "the slaves" at the time. Not exactly what were taught. His decisions were politically driven. Not HUMANITARILY driven. He did not like "the enslaved". Abraham Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln. Voice for freedom and rights. Right?
His writings don't matter. His actions do. GOD has used some very flawed men to make the greatest gains for humanity. Many of these men weren't keen on making profound change nor we're they capable.
"...and they are deeply flawed." Those words brought tears to my eyes. To quote a narration by Rod Serling that has always stuck with me: "A sickness known as hate. Not a virus, not a microbe, not a germ-but a sickness nonetheless, highly contagious, deadly in its effects. Don't look for it in the Twilight Zone-look for it in a mirror. Look for it before the light goes out altogether." The hardest thing for many of us to do is to stare at ourselves in the mirror and face the thing we often fear the most.
Both the Germans and the British could find common ground as Christians. No such moral commonality currently exists in America for either side to rally around.
We all don’t share a moral commonality, but we all share a physical one. We’re all human beings. We share biological commonalities that span to everyone on the planet regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, or nationality.
@@justadudeintheworldman.120 The fact that we are all of the same animal species means almost norhing when compared to higher values like Morality, Ideology, and World View. When World Views become intractable, conflict becomes inevitable. Which is exactly why Jocko went to kill terrorists on another continent despite the fact that both he and they were biologically similar.
The fact that you all think that this is about hate is why it's existed for for the 400 years that it has. None of this is about hate. It's about dominance and control. It's about those who have had enough, saying NO.
"Across the barricades I did see, a face that was familiar to me. Although I could not place said face, there was a hint, no...more a trace. Of all the values that meant to me of what it is to be free. Then it clicked, and I did see, that the face was of a human being, who was just like me"🙂.
The start "Across the Barricades" was taken from a the title of a book I remember having to read at college. I don't remember the author but the book itself centred around a Catholic and Protestant friends who meet again during the height of the troubles in Ireland and had to navigate staying friends while being on opposite religious sides. Everything else was written by me just using basic rhyming verse words structure 🙂
When he said "They are a person. Just like you. .... Please remember that." It literally made me sink. Something inside just dropped. Like the weight of the truth just landed on my heart... We are all just simply human.
Agree, that he brings hope. Not going ot be easy as the top 0,01% won't allow for people to see each other as people, it's about keeping their power and money. They want us to fight each other not just in the street, just look at the new Cold War with China and all the propaganda.
In the 1914 story don't forget, the Germans and English were still living in a strong period of Christian faith where respect and love of your fellow man was the central theme (e.g. the Golden Rule). I'm not sure that dynamic is even remotely present in today's combatants, which is a huge problem.
My sentiments exactly. There is a lot of wisdom in the Commander's words. But we have been taught and coerced into being a totally different type of people now. That is why every morning I look to the East hoping to see the great white horse and his rider coming to take us home.

I know that one - but the thing is, what happens if only one "side" picks up their weapons to kill and the other side tries to smile those bad feelings away? Guess what? I hate reality there, but still i can't ignore this. This reality is out there, and most of us have the luxury to ignore it, because our societies (more exactly some brave citizens) keeps it away from us more or less, which is something we should be deeply grateful for. Peace is for sure the best option, if it is available somehow...

One of the biggest lessons that i learned from combat was that its very easy to tell men to kill from the comfort of a FOB, its another thing to keep your men motivated when we are losing comrades daily and seeing the enemy dead up close. I was not only a squad leader, I was the HIIDE operator. I had to get up close and personal with the enemy KIA to record their biometrics. Pulling pictures of their kids off of their bodies, jewelry that was passed down from generations of family members, and scanning their lifeless eyes that no longer witnessed suffering. When I hear service members call the enemy animals and devalue them, It shows me that they are too chicken shit to acknowledge that the people they killed were human.
@ Dude you just tried to justify the Crusades. Maybe stop trying to wipe out a religion and start looking at your own. You might consider that more than half of the Christian Bible champions stoning women and dashing babies against stones. We all have darkness in our past and in our holy scriptures. We all have to walk our own moral path. You can point to the flaws in Muslim cultures and ignore concentration camps at our borders where we deliberately deprive mothers of enough drinking water to make milk for their babies and their babies starve, and have ripped 78,000 little kids from their families and shipped them to cages and adoption agencies all over this country. Jesus said before you try to take the flaw out of your brother's eye, take the log out of your own. Stop it with the Crusades. You're better than that. Clean your own cultural house. Humans let evil into the world. Humans can choose to take it out.

@@oceanecastelnau9821 Boy you are a piece of work. DO NOT try to call out the Christian faith with things you know nothing about. "more than half of the Christian Bible champions stoning women and dashing babies against stones" ?????? Have you ever read the Bible?? If so then you need to say "I am a liar!!" Because that is exactly what you are doing. The Old Testament does have stories of stoning those who were accused of a crime, but the majority of the Bible is a guide for Christians, and about love. The Bible is not partially dark. It has stories that are dark in tone, but the Bible is not dark. If you truly believe that HALF of the Bible champions stoning women and dashing babies against stones, then reply to this with actual scripture to prove your statement true. Also, show me the concentration camps you are talking about. I want pictures as well as any proof that the complex is a "concentration camp." Also show the proof that babies were deprived of food and starved. That should be pretty easy for you to do since it is such a massive atrocity. Every news agency should have video of that going on. The 78,000 little kids (btw, by saying little kids instead of just kids, you are saying that of all the kids you are concerned with, only the little kids matter.) that were separated from their parent/s, were ONLY taken away while their parent/s were being processed. This is done EVERY day in America with our own citizens. If a cop is called to a home where parents are committing a crime, the police always separate the children from the parents since the parents are sent to jail for their crimes. Where do you think the children should go? into the jail cell with their parent/s? No, you separate the parent/s who DID commit a federal law by crossing into the USA illegally, from their children just long enough to be processed. The only children who may be sent to foster care or to adoption agencies are those who do not have a parent with them when they crossed the boarder. Every other child is reunified with the parent/s. I hope your speech isn't political as well. Everything you are mentioning about what we as Americans have done to others is what the left loves to push on us all when it comes to the boarder. Let us remember that there are pictures out there which shows children separated from their parents and put in "cages" during the Obama presidency. Joyeux Noel is a great story of how people can put aside their differences and come together in friendship, but lets not try to make it look like every German and English soldier were wanting to be friends. They were at war, and not just because they were told to go. Both sides believed in what they were fighting for. The English Generals who told the men to fight or to be punished were absolutely within their rights and justified in their actions. We need to remember the chain of command and the importance in it. Without it we have anarchy which is worse than any war that may have occurred. 20 million died in WW1. 85 died in WW2. So how is WW1 the worst ware ever? This poet needs to make WW1 look like the worst so he can sell his Joyeux Noel story. Love and peace is such a great concept, but will never happen. Not saying that we shouldn't strive for it though. There will always be those out against others for selfish reasons. Those who push for this concept, and will do whatever it takes to gain it, are actually making what they want harder to achieve. I also do not need you to quote Matthew 7:3 to me. If you believe the bible, then use scripture, but if you do not believe, than leave scripture out of the conversation. I believe the bible is the word of God. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 - 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God[a] may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. Humans did not let evil into this world according to what I believe. Evil came to earth after Satan was kicked out of Heaven by God for trying to be more powerful than him. A war broke out and 1/3 of all angels sided with Lucifer and were cast out. These angels would become what we know today as demons. Satan knows his future, and will do whatever it takes to bring down as many people as he possibly can before being cast into hell. THIS is where evil comes from.
But wars continue, and the Government sends our children. An old poster in my Sister's room said: Suppose they gave a war, and nobody came... That was around 1970.
Daniel Campbell: I remember that this sentence is Part of a "poem" which lines out that not fighting does not avoid fighting but makes the fight come to you. It is not as peacefull as it seems 😔

Jocko has already said that he has no interest in politics but I listen to a speech like this and quite frankly,he sounds more like the kind of unifying, mature, admirable, caring and respectable presidential leader that the current President ISN'T.
I completely misjudged this man. In all the videos I’ve seen him in, he was always so matter of fact about military operations and other situations involving the use of violence and hostile scenarios that I thought he was callous, and although I didn’t think any less of him for it, I assumed that his military background had desensitized him and hardened his convictions in favor of authority. I was wrong to assume. I suppose if anybody would champion the value of human life, it’s somebody who has seen that life pitted against one another in some of the worst situations. Thank you for making this, for so many reasons. I’ve been letting my fear of corrupt authority make me forget that even the most hardened soldiers are absolutely human beings, and that you stand with humanity above all else
I appreciate your comments. Not nearly the guy Jacko is, but I had the privilege of leading men in combat in Iraq. Military science was my college major. I love tactics. I was trained in military discipline and responsible for training others in it. All of that was VITAL in war. But - if you are receptive to it (and most are) - find love for humanity and deep thankfulness in war. I can see the children around me in my head at a standard of living most of the western world could never imagine themselves in. I remember moving our Strykers through 'the dump' and seeing the 'homes' made out of trash. We emptied our vehicles of all the water and MRE's we had. Quietly. In unison. No order. I grew to love the Iraqi men in leadership positions I worked along side late in my deployment. They put them and their families lives at stake by fighting against Al Quaeda. Some of my Iraqi friends were blown up just weeks after I re-deployed. I remember the women weeping and tugging at my shirt as the senior officer they could get to. They prayed I know were their husbands were that were missing. I had no answer for them. I could go on and on about that 16 month deployment. But know this too... Al Quaeda was using the EXACT same tactics with the exact same goals as Antifa. They are working very hard to spread and increase factionalism. They don't care about the humans involved. They don't give a rip about George Floyd. They want to exacerbate hate between people and increase factionalism/tribalism. This will breed violent harm and violent reprisals. This has been extremely successful with the Palestinians. God Bless
You know, I'm really glad that you mentioned this. I'll be honest, I've never been in a war, I have however had family members who have fought in them. This story right here is the main thing that has always stuck in my head. From the first time that I heard it as a kid. It's for that reason why I never see other people as my enemy. We're all so massively similar. We're all given an idea about what we should be and how we should act. Sometimes we have no choice, in other cases we do have a choice. That being said: Anyone out there who is going out to protest, Keep it peaceful and stay safe.
Hello Jocko. I'm a Navy veteran and very very very proud to have served my country and also kneel to all those who are serving in the Navy and other branches and as well to those are have died in battle. I've watched your videos, very touching and amazing, really had me think a lot. I just want to say one thing as it relates to your video. To all those who look down on homeless veterans not knowing what to think or how to react, please look at them as human beings, and not a piece of dirt... Treat them with respect and dignity for they have served you and you shall serve them as they are human too. Thanks Jocko!!!
Alek Stryker. Great post! When I was growing up, we used to say the pledge of allegiance to the flag every morning in school; we all learned it, and knew it by heart. I don’t think that’s true anymore. Unfortunately, not not only are children not taught this in school, they seem to be taught to think less of their country and the flag and all it represents. It is sad, troublesome and explains a lot of what we are seeing happening right now.
Free people don’t need to “pledge allegiance” to their government. It’s an antiquated idea we are any less American or disgraceful for not swearing to worship our government, America is not the sum of its governing body but rather the people who reside there. Worship your religion not your government.
This is a safe response to an issue that is far past being handled with kid gloves and truisms. These words are useless for the protestors who are sincerely protesting police brutality and institutional racism. These words could be of use if listened to by the perpetrators of these crimes and injustices. With that said do you think a person like Derek Chauvin was willing to see George Floyd as person? My answer would be no, in which case he has to be appropriately punished for his actions. Jocko’s anecdote is patronising to those on the receiving end of the dehumanisation that has been one sided. There is not a rich history of black people dehumanising the police, it is insane to pretend that this is some hotly contested battle in with both side need to calm down and temper their emotions. We are talking about a civic institution that has been abusing its power for decades - a hostile situation with an obvious aggressor. Address the situation specifically or just leave it alone. For people without solutions being silent and listening is probably the best solution for them. The unfortunate thing about this is that Jocko is probably more qualified to speak on the actual footage than he is to the wider societal tensions and here he has missed a fitting opportunity to really contribute to the discussion in a meaningful way. I would have loved to hear how would he have handled some of the situations eg. the Breonna Taylor killing, or other situations in which people have been killed by police while unarmed (whether it was through unnecessary shootings or manoeuvres like chokes, etc). As a jiu-jitsu black belt and a former SEAL it would be far more practical to have him give his take on how these situations could have been handled to avoid unnecessary fatalities. After all we are dealing with a group of people hear abusing their power and killing with impunity, that will not be solved with the ‘kumbaya’ approach. A change in how they operate, particularly in high octane situations, would be more useful and Jocko has almost every credential imaginable to consult on that.
I've often noticed travelling the world with the military that I have much more in common with my fellow soldiers from other countries than civilians from my own.
This speaks to something I have tried to remember during times like these. During an argument or a fight, there is almost never just a good and a evil. There may be a right and a wrong. Maybe there are two wrongs or even two rights, but the person or people you are disagreeing with are almost never evil. This is because they have a reason for what they do and how they feel. It may be a flawed reason, they may not know what those reasons are, and you almost definitely don’t know what there reasons are. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t there. They have different experiences than you, they hear different information every day than you hear, and because of this and so much more, they have come to a different conclusion than you. There conclusion may be wrong, or Maybe your’s is wrong. But that doesn’t matter, because what matters is everyone is wrong sometimes, but you have a reason for being wrong. It may not have been a good reason, but you were wrong, and you are human, and being wrong is part of being human. And the most important thing to remember is, they are human too. They could be wrong, you could be wrong. That isn’t the point. The point is you recognize that they are most likely not evil, they’re just human. And the only way we are going to get through times like these are to remember we are all human, and when we do that it becomes easier to have a dialog, and if both sides can see each other as human and are willing to try and understand each other and what there reasons are, or even just except each other as human, then we can make change. Not as good vs evil, but as human talking with human.
@steve sabroe What some of those “protesters” have done to churches and other people and their property is morally wrong. At best you have to argue that two wrongs do in fact make a right in order to justify it.
Look, I have been in combat. I watched my best friend die, right next to me. Some thirty+ years later, I am still grieving his loss. Aside from my wife, he was the person that I was closest to in my entire life. Because we were in pressurized situations, we had to learn to trust each other completely. I suppose what I am trying to communicate is that these times, where protesters, and either the police or soldiers are in direct conflict, in the street, those people need to work very hard to attempt to keep their emotions in check, as much as possible, particularly those with firearms or other weapons, like rocks or broken bottles, & they really need to try to maintain that touch of humanity, like Jocko Willink is trying to get across to people. The instant you dehumanize the "other" in those times, it makes it too easy to take a another person's life or to maim them. I truly hope that by spreading this video around to pages where the moments captured show people getting hurt or even killed, because Jocko Willink has so much more credibility than I will ever have on RU-vid, which is fine with me. The point is to get people to really HEAR what he is saying AND LISTEN TO JOCKO & TAKE HIS POWERFUL WORDS TO THEIR HEARTS & MINDS. These times are dangerous for everyone taking part, I just hope that people will hear him and respond accordingly. What Jocko is saying is very important. Jocko needs a larger platform, because what he is saying is valid, true and important. Right now, in this country we have a time to change things that should have been changed a long time ago. I'm Native American and we actually get killed by the police more often than any other minority in this country. Look it up, it's true. Yet, i think, right now, we have a chance to make changes that will end that statistic. For us and for all minority groups. If we all take what Jocko is saying to heart, we can make that change happen. It's simply called having respect for other human beings, regardless of what " group" we belong to our what "group" the other people belong to. Simply by respecting the lives of that "other group". We need to all come together, as Americans. We are all Americans after all. And we can come together and discuss our grievances. Every group has grievances to discuss. Whether we are Native, Black, Latino, Asian, or White. We all have grievances that NEED TO BE ADDRESSED and WE MUST COME TOGETHER TO DISCUSS THOSE GRIEVANCES. Things MUST CHANGE TO FIX THIS COUNTRY. NOW IS THE TIME TO FIX THINGS. ENOUGH PEOPLE HAVE DIED. ENOUGH PEOPLE HAVE GRIEVED THEIR LOSSES. JOCKO IS RIGHT AND I SUPPORT HIS STATEMENT. Also, from me personally, thank you Jocko Willink, for putting this message out here. You are a first class human being and we are fortunate to have your presence around in such troubling and dangerous moments in our country's history. Again, Jocko, thank you Sir!
@Olaf The KO King, what an interesting thing to say to a guy from a minority group. Then again, my minority group was here first, in what is now referred to as the United States of America. You might find this interesting too, Olaf. This quote is taken from an article on the Military Times website (I'll post a link to the article at the end of this comment for you or anyone else that would care to look.), "Native Americans have a unique take on the issue as the ethnic group with the highest military-service rate, and an enduring regard for warriors." (The "issue" referred to is "taking a knee for the National Anthem at sporting events in the USA.) I thought you, Olaf, might find it interesting that we Native types, serve in the military at a significantly higher rate than any other ethnic group in the USA. A country that was "ours" to begin with, then we were invaded & our lands were taken & we lost all of our autonomy to this thing called the United States of America was suddenly in charge of us. We weren't allowed to vote by the way, and heck we weren't even citizens of the US until 1924. Yet, we serve in the military far more than any other group. That's more than whites, as a percentage of our population, just to make that clear enough for you. I also mentioned that we, Native Americans, are more likely to be killed by the police in the USA, than any other ethnic group, even more than African Americans. This is a quote from Newsweek, "The number of Native Americans killed by police doubled from 2015 to 2016. Per capita, Native Americans are more likely to be killed by police than any other demographic in the U.S., according to a 2014 study by The Center of Juvenile and Criminal Justice. And that's probably undercounted." I expect that few people are aware of either statistic I just mentioned here. Either about serving in the military, which I did, or about the fact that we Natives are more likely to be killed by the police than any other group in the USA. In light of those 2 facts, I am really curious by what you mean by your statement, "As long as there are minorities in any country we'll never be at peace." Are you saying that people like me, a Native man & a military Veteran, or someone like one of my best friends, an African American man, who is also a military Veteran, should get the heck out of the USA. Also, if that is what you mean, where would you expect we Native Americans should go exactly? In light of the fact that the USA is our home & had been our home for untold generations, before any European people ever came here. So, Olaf, would you please explain what you mean by your statement? I guess what you might be trying to say is that people from different ethnic groups cannot get along, regardless of anything. So your solution to the problems the USA is currently undergoing with police brutality, can be solved by every ethnic group being separated out, kind of like the segregation laws the southern U.S. states had from the end of the Civil War until the Civil Rights Act of 1964? Is that what you mean, Olaf? Please, let me know because I am really curious as what you meant by your statement. Thanks a lot, Olaf The KO King. Moe Pittman Its not an answer though. It involves no solution or suggests no action of any type. Its just a guy talking about empathy. At the end of the day protestors will continue to protest until they feel satisfied and police will continue to police as they have their orders.
This the greatest thing I've heard in a long long time. It's not about the Democrats and Republicans. It's not about Trump or Pelosi. It's cry for the recognition that we're people, all of us, with good days and bad days.
We are beginning to dehumanize one another. This is a very bad thing. I appreciate this level headed message as the messages from others have been messages full of rhetoric and anger.
We have always dehumanized others different from us. I actually believe that we dehumanize others less now in the west than any other time in recorded history. That said, we still have a long way to go. Blessings to you, stay safe. I wish you an extraordinary life. :)
@@blockboygames5956 We have been dehumanizing each other less in the last four and a half decades but it's gaining momentum again. And it is dividing people within their own demographics, not just between different socio-economic groups, races, etc.
This was very hard to hear. I feel like "my side" is the understanding side. That the other side is unreasonable, and unwilling to even try and understand where we're coming from. Like they've already made up their opinion of us and therefore will not listen. I feel like they just don't get it. I feel like they've taken the actions of a few of the people in my organization to used them as a means to simply say "See, none of them are worth listening to, or respecting." And I'm on the side of the Police. The scary thing? If I read that above paragraph to myself, it could be coming from a protester.
mjed, Great comment. That's why I find videos like this one completely empty without any wisdom whatsoever. You can focus on isolated incidents and say that there is hope, but the truth is far more complicated than that. Whoever lays their weapons first will lose. This is how wars start, it's not just evil man at the top being evil as this video tries to portray the WW1 situation. If Entente decided not to fight the Germans, they would potentially jeopardize their families safety in the long run. The odds of Germans doing the same significantly drops after Entente lays their weapons first, because that's how any animal reacts when it senses weakness, it becomes emboldened and enforces their will. Not to mentioned that Germans now know they could conquer their enemies with very few casualties, so for them not to take that chance would be insane. So there are no idealistic solutions to this, whoever fights for their beliefs more will win.
What people don't understand is that police are people, and if they hear daily that they are monsters and racists, that they are evil and warmongering, facts being, most people are not, but of course they get angry, and they can lash out, I mean, if you are being beaten, your Quarters being burnt, your brothers being killed, it's easy to give into rage.
I hope this message reaches the people who need it most. Fortunately I was taught all of this at a very young age, it became "common sense." It starts at home with Mom, Dad and the rest of the village.
This man is a damn national treasure. Always have and always will love Jocko's words.....which always seem to lead me to not only better things, but the RIGHT things. There's several layered messages in this monologue, I believe. Everybody stay sane, stay fair, and stay safe.
Thank you for this, Jocko. I’m reading the other comments and my mind is stuck on the fact that so many of our elected officials have never served in the military. That’s why they can’t speak like this. Hell, hardly any of them have ever had a real job. But I digress ... Jocko is obviously a stellar leader and an example of a man realizing his potential, but anyone who has been in the military has had versions of speeches like this, sometimes of more or less gravity. And these speeches were not always from who you’d suspect, but rather from corporals and sergeants and petty officers who stepped up when people needed them to. And some officers who earned the respect of their units could also find ways to make their words felt in the minds and spirits of those they led. My point is that this kind of leadership is metabolized up through the ranks in the military. Ask yourself why none of our elected officials seem to be able to bring us together, and you might find their lack of military service to be an indicator of larger patterns that will ultimately inform your answer.
I have heard many variations of this story over the years, but the lesson is a very valid one. The problem is that the other soldiers in any conflict are being led my truly evil people. The challenge is rooting out the evil.
Jocko thank you for your service. Anyone who has heard "war pigs" by black sabbath. Those lyrics are spot on. War pigs was featured on "300 rise of an empire".
Agreed. May all hear the wisdom in your words brother. Hopefully the ones with no care for those that Serve will listen to you as they clearly do not listen to anyone else. Be safe and Thank you for what you're trying to do here
I feel like you should maybe be able to summon this floating head every time you hit a major crossroad in your life. ...or at least we should get three wishes before handing the lamp off to someone else.
Then the clock struck midnight and the world went to hell again. The soldiers understand, the leaders just don’t get it! As to the core of your post, well said!
