They mention briefly that police are leaving in droves but don't really mention it again. This is the most important thing they should have focused on in their investigation. What is the point of hiring new police if they are going to continue leaving. The cycle will continue until they plug the leak.
It's just a stressful job, same as what is happening with nurses, doctors etc. Frontline workers got screwed in covid and a lot of them are sick of it.
Start policing yourselves then you’ll regain public trust and it will make your job easier…then people will be more likely to consider the police department as a viable job prospect. That and pay them more(like teachers).
@pota you should consider WHY ppl hate them. Imposing property taxes on ppl against their will so they can’t own their homes and are forced into the workforce can be a reason
@@queenofthebutterflies5212 Two I can recall felt like zero crime when I was there are Switzerland and Hungary. Scandinavian countries come close but there are no-go areas and late at night in the cities isn't necessarily safe because of bored refugees congregating and gangs.
based. We seem to worry a lot here about arresting/hurting/murdering 'criminals' instead of how to prevent people turning to crime Raising welfare payments would be a start. People obviously would steal less things if they weren't being forced to live in poverty - due to governments here refusing to increase the disability support pension and aus-study etc they can no longer afford to eat. The amount of women over 50 i know that "Forget" to scan items at woolies because their disability-pension/jobseeker payments arent enough to live on. Its heartbreaking. Were one of the richest countries in the world! Considering how rich our country is: People who are unlucky enough to not be able to work deserve enough money to live in dignity & not have to steal from woolies. God, this just makes me genuinely upset If we spent as much effort and money into fixing these ignored and marginalised places/people - then there would be a heck of a lot less crime and the police could actually, y'know, attempt to catch rpists and catch rich elites who do fraud and corporate wage-theft etc
I dont know. When people are getting fined for a mental lapse while driving yet there are drug dealers going unpunnished nearby (for 10 years)... people lose respect for the police. I dont know anyone who respects the police any more. I assume that would get some officers down - being unvalued, hated or when people are flat out scared of you... frenzle rhomb said it best - who'd be a cop?
then its the publics lack of understanding how policing works, not all police are tasked with hunting down gangs, police enforce the law no matter how minor its their job, people should stop doing stupid shit and follow the rules or accepts responsibility not freak out and make things worse, that being said there does seem to be a problem with excessive force and some cops feeling they are above the community they serve, though i would say i have never had a bad interaction with the police but thats because i follow instructions and help them do their job without causing issues and thats probably why i have never met a bad cop.
I always cringe a little whenever I hear about soldiers and police officers being transferred from overseas, effectively turning the military and police into a kind of mercenary force. I especially hope they don't bring in any American police, since they generally lack professional standards and integrity.
People know how awful qps is. I have personally been a victim of police brutality at the hands of qps. I think people would go in with good intentions and become wrapped up in an awful culture. Why would anyone want to ruin their life being hated by everyone and having to harrass people.
Also a victim of qps, charged wrongly to make up quotas, gotta love that you gotta have a number of criminals on your list to look good so you gotta fake it hey!
I live in Canada and I saw a recruitment ad on Facebook enticing Canadians to go work as police officers in Queensland. I was surprised to see it, but this explains why.
We've always been this same country We're a state literally bult on a foundation of white supremacist dispossession of sovereign indigenous countries. Police in the country from day one have been murdering people and stealing their land, Again, nothing new. The police cracked down on racial minorities, and kicked in the heads on leftist/socialist protestors, etc even before 1901. Who did that? the equivalant of cops at the time. SO yeah, no I disagree with your 'police got bad during covid take'. I just think a lot of white, straight, cis people only FOUND OUT the police are aggressive during covid for the first time. This because, as the stats show, you're far more likely to be harassed by the police if you're a minority. It didn't start during covid, but covid gave the cops an opportunity to do whey always do. Until covid, people lucky enough to be born white and middle class probably never realised the police are such a horrible institution Minorities in this country have warned about it forever. But cooked facebook grandmas still want to pretend the police only oppresses the right wing. It sucks police violence had to happen to anti-lockdown protesters for the to realise this a broblem that has gone on forever y'know? It's not that the police got worse during covid. its just that a wider group of people were targeted by cops and so LEARNED about how oppressive out policing is. Leftists, unions and anti-racists, gender+xual minorities etc have had to deal with police violence forever. Covid invented nothing. Still happens today, they just look friendlier and have a float at Mardi Gras - but they're still just the grown up highschool bully they have always been The police are the armed tool of the state & they are there to repress dissent and retain 'normality', Laws are just threats of violence and the cops are the ones who carry out (or initiate or cause) said violence. I got no beef with you specially, it just annoys me that some people think what the police did during covid is somehow new. It's not. I'm glad you're on the acab train though. I've some links to some really well done research, if you wanna learn the history of aussie cops crushing protects, dinnent and picking on minorities. hmu for it, i find this stuff fascinating *and obviously horrific
A few guys I have spoken to, who were police in WA, simply got sick of not seeing their efforts translate to a safer society. E.g. there is a huge issue with indigenous crime rates and nothing being done to prevent it or to punish it. The police basically just generate paperwork and watch social decay.
I think I read policing only reduces crime 5 or 10%. While socially beneficial actions, such as reducing poverty, affordable access to health, education, housing, etc, reduce crime, mental health issues, etc, by massive amounts. When our dear leaders invest more and legislate wisely for the people instead of their corporate donors we’ll see better outcomes. As an example, a study I read looked at the NHS and found for every £1 spent on public healthcare after 20 years there was an £11 return on investment due to improvements in health leading to lowered health costs to increased economic returns through personal spending and tax because people could work better and longer and created more beneficial economic activity.
Who would want to be a cop in Victoria ? ,No one wants to be one of comrade Dans storm troopers,or tax agent .Maybe go back to police work not harassing the public and handing out bogus fines.
It's a bit of a "make your own work" kind of job. They do not seem to know what reasonable suspicion is. Arrests need "who, how, what, when, where and why" answers. Sadly, it is the perfect job for people with a huge ego, or sociopaths and psychopaths. Testing for these traits should be mandatory.
Low pay, huge workload which has only gotten higher with the standard expected with issues which as domestic violence, missing persons etc, much higher population with no additional police positions (so higher population to police ratio which is never spoken about when compared to nurse to patient patio), extremely poor supervision who do no assist in workload, no flexible work conditions, little prospect of climbing the ranks, highway patrol officers giving low end offending infringements to potential police or potential members of a jury, But most of all the response during the pandemic. Why would anyone want to be a police officer?
If people don't want to be cops its because working conditions and pay don't add up, improve them until you see this change. Pretty simple stuff, less simple is the poor perception of law enforcers. Some are way to high on the smell of their own arm pits and the power given to them only encourages this, I am your average law abiding citizen but I am still extremely wary of cops because they simply have to much power to make my life hell if it suits them and they can and do abuse this, I wouldn't apply for a job to be apart of that either.
16,700 Police Officers and 6,900 staff = 22,300 plus recruits in training etc. So 1 billion thats 1,000,000,000 divided by 22,300 = $44,843 per person. The average salary in Victoria is $65,000. Police in Victoria are paid pretty well so either we are getting a bargain at 1 billion or your information is incorrect. Dont let that sink in. Instead do some basic research and maths.
I was aware of the unpaid training period but not about the cost - is that the cost of the training/education (i.e. B. Policing)? Does the applicant accrue a HECS debt for that?
See how the Qld Commissioner barely acknowledged the issues during Covid, the culture of the police force and instead decided to palm it off as an almost none issue... Yeah that's why people are not joining. It's a hard job, made only harder by upper management.
Policing is my only dream today. I wanna give it a go but I am a student so will have to wait to get me PR after graduation then citizenship. long long wait for people like me.
Vic Police pay is very good IMO. The salary went up a lot about 15 years ago. Now they expect well educated, perfect candidates. I think the trouble is, if you are well educated and very employable then you are less likely to accept the incompetent leadership and political interference. So, you go and work elsewhere.
SAPOL have shot themselves in the foot so many times when it comes to recruiting. They have been over seas plenty of times after rejecting great local people... then they've back flipped and recruited those same local people years later. I know countless who went interstate and got in after applying to SAPOL and being rejected.
Should be an easier pathway for people leaving the military to fast track into the police force . The military is one of the biggest recruiting pool with fit young men and woman ready to go
Never join the nsw police force, ptsd, physical injuries and having to fight EML the insurance company. NSW police force treats its staff like disposable assets, no jobs when you leave. Get a proper job where you wont suffer ptsd or suicide.
@@MrGareth777 Have you read the article where his girlfriend admitted he regularly called black people "n*****rs and c***ns" and would get fellow-cops to scratch him in the face - after he beat up handcuffed kids he'd arrested - so he could pretend it was self defence? This is not the kinda guy who you wanna be defending. He's the PERFECT example of a racist who joined the police because he wanted to hurt groups of people he was biased against. He's literally quoted saying he wanted to kill people and only joined the police because the SAS didnt want him. A violent, dangerous, psychopath - not some hero
@@MrGareth777 google "Zachary Rolfe + ex-girlfriend + SAS" and you'll find the article i referenced in my comment - If you're interested. The murderer sounds like a horrific person, terrible cop and someone obsessed with race and killing/hurting people. I find it depressing that people would defend someone who murdered a kid for no reason. Please do your own research before spreading misinformation again, mate. Look after yourself and have a good one, mate :)
After a few years a cop easily makes 100k a year and they get 20% super on top. They also get other perks such as free mcdonalds and other discounts. If you are in the force for at least 10 years, you also receive a large payout when you leave.
It sounds like people are really just mad at capitalism. Higher pay and better conditions are NEVER suggested despite it knowingly being the cure. If I can find a job that is less risky, pays more and lets me do legally protected activities in my country during my off time, why would I risk my life when my landlord wont take rent in the form of "good feelings"? Enforcing unjust laws against people you have more in common with than your command with impunity and not being able to smoke weed sounds... fun.
Maybe they would have a chance if they opended up a bit to people who are completely reformed and interested in becoming a police member but messed went off their desired path at a young age. Some of the things people like that have been through could offer a uniquely different thought pattern and could help them become better at what they do. They could do it in a way where people like this agree to extremely harshe penalties for any slip ups.
the cops have always been bad. Just because you only found that out during covid doesnt mean they BECAME bad during covid. They've been oppressing minorities and violently supressing leftist/indigenous-rights protest movements for hundreds of years here. Covid didnt invent that. get out of your bubble
I’d rather not live in the purge thanks. A society where there are professionals trained in the law enforcing the law is a lot more preferable than a society where law and order is dictated by whoever has the faster trigger finger.
It comes down to this, would you want to work long and irregular hours deal with mentally and physically straining situations for not even 80k a year. Even if you want to serve the community and believe in upholding the law, the money and benefits aren't there for people to want to join up.
You ozzies should re-legalize gun possession. The cops won't help you if they don't show up for work, and criminals have a unique ability to acquire guns illegally. (shocker!)
I got my fair share of problems with gun laws, but have you seen road rage in this country? Domestic Violence is bad here. You’re trying to solve a problem while creating another.
This is what happens when you make the police force go woke. Teach nationalism and conservatism and youd be fine. Give police the power to solve crimes and not facilitate it. Give them a free hand to use force on criminals Increase punishment, implement re-education and labour in prisions.
Police are just doing their jobs folks. They’re only human. They’re someones mum or dad. Someone’s son or daughter. I regard Australian police with high distinction they look after Australia’s most vulnerable and keep our roads safe. We need to get more behind these officers they get it hard enough on the job.
This report stops dramatically short of mentioning even more factors contributing to this issue. An even bigger matter within the force not reported on here. It's missing.
