to play devils advocate, some of the scenes where the agents use excessive violence are part of the narrative. I mean Hotch was beating up the guy who killed his wife and Spencer has never done any physical violence to an unsub except for (in that particular scene) Cat who tormented him by drugging him (after being sober for almost 10 years), (lied about) SAing him, framed him for murder, got him thrown in jail, then kidnapped his mentally ill mother and tried to kill her, and made fun of his girlfriend dying in front of him. (JJ is also trying to hold him back from killing her). And in Elle's case, she had extreme PTSD from the guy stalking and nearly killing her, and she was so tormented and impatient by the slow system that she decided to take it into her own hands. The show actively says that she is in the wrong, but she doesn't believe it. However, I totally agree that they pick and choose when they want to give sympathy and grace to an unsub, and are often overly violent when there is no real threat. it's so frustrating because they have all the pieces to make great commentary about the corrupted system and injustices, but only sprinkle some in when it's convenient for the narrative. In some episodes, they try to talk down an unsub to try to keep them alive, but after a while, it seemed like they were purposefully trying to kill them, and just talked to them to distract them. Again, they give very little sympathy to an unsub, especially those with mental illness. Reid has some episodes where he connects with unsubs or victims due to his mother's illness and his guilt over Tobias, but this rarely happens. After a while, it seemed to be less nuanced with cases and how they ended and more, "either they die or get thrown into jail for the rest of their lives". Honestly, though, this is an (unfortunate) accurate depiction of actual federal agents and police enforcement considering they are quick to violence, don't fully understand nuances in mental illness, and have a savior complex believing that their system works. This isn't a criticism of your video, just general thoughts. Great commentary though, really needed to be addressed considering the rise in popularity that the show has been receiving recently.

totally agreed. there are several episodes where they call out corruption and politics in the fbi itself, with hotch getting unfairly suspended, emily being sent in the BAU to spy on them, and one of the episodes where a mayor admits that being the director of FBI means getting into politics.

I have been looking for someone to analyze this show. It is also absurd, the criminals are absurdly powerful and manage to so things that push them into supernatural ways. There is one boss unsub who uses drugs on people with dissociative issues and manage to convince them that they are someone else…and under this weird hypnosis (that can be activated years afterward) they kill several people. Connected to this warped feminist angle, the team often goes on about inherited psychopathy. It is a recurring theme, serial killers whose children are also serial killers even when they were not raised by them. A “genetic” link is even invoked. You showed one such case, a twin who had been killing meets another one who had never done so. They were not even aware of each other’s existence until then. No matter, the one who never killed anyone immediately gets excited by killing and joins in. Their mother is, of course, vicious. Another killer was separated from his serial killer mother as a young child…he reunites with her as a grownup and within months, he too is a serial killer. This gets recycled in season 14, in which the exact same thing happens except the parent- a father- is dead. But the child grows up into a violent serial killer and the team draws a “genetic” connection. Here, they are aware that they screwed up as Emily had promised to check in on him when he was a kid, over his father’s investigation, and then drops the ball entirely. And they are aware environment plays a role as he was forced to take part in the killings as a kid (same as the other example mentioned above) but there is still a notion that being they would not have turned to crime if not for “genetics”.

When majority of victims are women. Yes law enforcement is a system that protects women and children.

9:53 is extra stupid, considering the episode prior showed that male agent taking down several heavily armed criminals with ease. But yeah, shoot a tiny lady with a tinier blade.

Criminal Minds = real life policing and government problems = BAD *** That's as bad a take as "superheroes have too much power so they're going to become evil!"
