The pre-war tango Bajka, dedicated by Igo Kranowski to the mysterious R.J., was presented as the most beautiful tango of the current season! (Love is intoxication, delusion and bitter tears.) This tango lasted many seasons and enjoyed unflagging popularity until the war. When the Hebrew version was recorded, the press reported that the tango "Fairy Tale" was a hit in Paris. The Hebrew version was recorded by the famous Adam Aston under the pseudonym Ben Lewi for Syrena Record, which at the time had a flagship store in Tel Aviv. And this is how the fairy tale about Róża was created. (information from the book of Katarzyna Zimek/Tomasz Jankowski: 'Hebrew Tango in interwar Poland'. Complete translation of this song available in this book as well.
Polish text (fragments) translated by Jonasz Rewiński:
"A dismal night, so bleak and grey,
A night that never goes away,
A night that keeps our dream alive,
A night that let's illusion thrive (....)
You were a fairy tale to me, yet now our dreams can never be,
For love is ecstasy, illusion and bitter tears...(...)"
Hebrew text (fragment) translated by Tomasz Jankowski:
"It was a mystery that all whispered about,
Where did she come from?
(...) Yet no one knew where she came from that sudden guest, N
No one but me...
A flower bloomed among the green,
So verdant, fresh and lush,
A rose I planted, a rose I picked, I rose I gave to her..."
