polishing BIG SCRATCHES from my safety glasses

Safety glasses protect our eyes but nothing protects them. After big scratches collect all of the surface of the lens they make it difficult to see what you’re working on. Sometimes you find yourself lifting your scratched safety glasses just to see what you’re doing on your project. That’s not good. Sn this video I go through the process on how to recondition your safety glasses.
sandpaper: amzn.to/3cgDKfy
6-inch buffer: amzn.to/3blktIO
buffing wheel & rubbing compound kit: amzn.to/2UbOHbc
A buffing wheel from Harbor freight is absolutely essential. They’ll cost about seven dollars and this gives the necessary heat in the polishing process to shine that finish. If there’s large scratches you’ll need to use 800 grit or 1200 grit sandpaper to flatten the Lynn’s surface. It is so nice when you can actually see through your safety glasses again.

Unless I missed it - might be worth mentioning to go with care not to overheat and melt the plastic in the process, as that would ruin the lenses. The risk varies a bit depending on the particular kind of material.

They have finer compounds than the one he is using (emry or stainless I'm guessing) there are buffing compounds for jewelry and plastic which are much finer and might get those lenses to a more clear finish

I WAS going to point out the cost of buying the wheel and the sandpaper VS a new pair of glasses. I AUS, these exact glasses can be bought for AUS$ 4.50, less for bulk. In the US these exact same glasses will cost you US$ 7.00. Your stuff, 99.9% of the time is half of what we pay. ?????????????? Just a footnote, keep in mind, doing what you are doing here will jeopardize the integrity of the glasses, meaning, the difference between stopping that stray projectile and not stoping that stray projectile.

You are not BSing on polishing everything. More addictive than blow. Started by mirror finish shining my aluminum 3 piece Sugino cranks for my old Redline bike. Ended up shining everything in sight. Boy those Amazon 6 dollar cotton wheels last forever. 3 months of heavy use. Ok question part so you mentioned prescription eyeglasses and you wouldn't advise it but yes it works too so what about a step further an say CD and game CD. Like PS2 and Xbox games??? I have did an allergy test??? on an old Motley Crue CD and it was a go. Also the Audio slave CD is now playing again, so I'm gonna step up and try a game CD. So my question ●is there a certain rotation you favor and what about rotation of disk while buffing. Up and down motion or side to side??● Will not be at fault cause I already am determined to do it and I do know the consequences just a heads up from some body who knows more than me would be great. Also no kids will be heartbroken if I screw up the games because they are all grown. Just get tired of the dam things freezing.● What you say sir???● Almost forgot..... okay some of those cutting compounds, the little wax sticks or whatever they are some of them are kind of brittle the brown expecially so ●do you were any kind of mask or respirator when you are working as it is really brittle and I must get airborne or am I being paranoid??●
@livefree6878
@livefree6878 5 лет назад
We’ve been polishing just about everything since we’ve got that cotton polishing wheel from Harbor freight. The more you experiment the better shown you yet. If the compound builds up on the cloth I use a hacksaw blade to remove the build up. You need that cloth to be pretty soft. The motor that I’m using is relatively slow. It’s from an old washing machine it has a much slower RPM then your typical 1750 modern motor. I’m not sure the RPM. I’ve tried all kinds of patterns side to side round and round, I just go tell it shiny. Sometimes you can spray some water on the cotton buffing wheel. It’s never a bad idea to have a dust mask. There’s times when I will wet the dust mask the water takes out even more dust. Are used to make a polishing tool for CD ROMs. You would put your CD into the device and spin it. You would apply your different compounds to the wheel. I think polishing that on the Cotton wheel would be no problem. It’s always a good idea to practice on something that you’re willing to lose first. I polished my Prescription glasses, that was a long time ago and they’re working really well. I hope I answered some of your questions, if not let me know

@@livefree6878 yeah so basically just little bit at a time. All my glasses and safety glasses what the hardest part is is there scratches on the inside and I have to hold the damn glasses to where it gets the inside without sucking the glasses up and spitting them out the other side😯😯😖 that hurts. Yeah I got a regular bench grinder motor things spins pretty fast. The cotton wheel about the six or seven inches or so they're pretty good I got them off Amazon $14 and it came with 2 cotton wheels, some cutting compound, red white brown black. Red was the bomb that got shhyit nice. I have an old Redline bmx bike(84) is completely like chrome the cranks the pedals gooseneck stem everything chainring sprocket everything I chromed It out by polishing it. I mean this shyt is addictive Jesus I'm starting to want to do it just talkin about it. Yeah I got the real expensive respirators like for organic lab work then I got the kind used for painting cars then I got the step down the particulate masks.. There's really no reason for me not to be wearing rather than too lazy to go and get it once I start polishing. I will probably use those particulate masks and line them with some wet coffee filters in the inside there's as a precaution double up protection. They'll come out 20 years now and say that it causes cancer may have crystalline silica in the cutting agent. Thanks dude appreciate it much

@Billkwando
@Billkwando 2 года назад
Uvex are trash once they're scratched or the anti glare/fog coating is disturbed (by cleaning with.anything but water). I tried Meguiar's PlastX polish/cleaner, which is supposed to be amazing, and even that and a cotton buffing wheel on my drill couldn't make them clear again. I threw them out, just now, and ordered a nice set of DeWalt DPG82-11C goggles for $12 and a case (LTGEM Case for DEWALT DPG82-11/DPG82-21 ) from amazon, for the same price I paid for the goggles. It's worth it if it keeps them clean and scratch free. All the cheaper cases had bad reviews (too small, liner scratches goggles, etc.)

By far the easiest way to get the haze off is the buffing wheel. For years I didn’t have one. The wheel itself is about six dollars at Harbor freight. Of course the motor would be more. If you’re into tools, you won’t regret investing. Do you want to polishing everything. If you keep buffing by hand it is possible to get that final luster that way but it’s a lot of work. Another method that I really don’t even want to mention is using a flame. I’ve had pretty good luck with that method but it’s easy to burn the plastic. Hope the answer helps.
