I use a break cylinder hone personally. But the way you did it is fine. 400 grit is okay.

That's one way to keep a cam from going flat.

Very important to also check lifter bore diameter to make sure it's in speck and also measure each lifter

Yes, and keep in mind oversized lifters do/did exist for some engines. This can be good if you need to over bore and destaterious if you drop a regular sized lifter in an overbored lifter bore. So check every lifters bore, sometimes people did one or two to save $$$. Ford, is known to have done weird things to save blocks after machining errors. So don't assume just because you're the first in their things are going to be as they should normally be.

How’s your oil pressure after doing that? Never heard of anyone doing this before? Was there any surface rust in the bores? Those lifter bores are precision honed to fit the diameter of the lifter.

Won't know until I put it all back together but should be fine. Only used 400 grit. Just enough to clean them up and get them smooth so lifters spin freely. I checked them with a caliper and they are all stock bore size still.

That's an FE block. They get metered a perfect amount of oil pressure in hydraulic engine blocks.

Use it wet with WD40 for a better result 👍🇦🇺

Wow, Somebody rescue that block and get it to a machine shop. Tapered, belled, out of round... and off center as the shortness of the bolt forced being off axis. I doubt a cam survives lifters in those bores.

I can't speak of the longevity of the engine being I sold it but it ran great and has good oil pressure for the few hundred miles I put on it. Once I got a few hours run time on it I didn't baby it. Ran it up to around 6k rpms quite often and never had any issues.

I bet money the engine will run fine. And half the machine shops out there do piss poor work. How do I know ? I have a full set of micrometers. Machine shops don't like it when I measure all their work in front of them.

Old GM, Ford, and Mopar engines run fine as a daily driver even when everything isn't perfect. All those worries about exact tolerances matter most if someone is building a race engine. As long as ring gaps and bearing clearances aren't too tight, so tight that they seize up, they'll go another 100,000 if the seals are installed properly.

@@Erics_Garage All you gotta to is seat the rings during the first 50 mi change the oil and let er rip. No need for 500 mile baby/break ins anymore drives me crazy when I see guys mainly older doing this. lol Long as you arent removing metal its probably fine Most shops skip or hackjob lifter bores anyways. Many customers dont wanna pay for it

@@jesse75 That's just the trouble with machine shops, piss poor work because the guys don't gaf. (it ain't their motor)
