Throughout India’s electoral history, concerns over unemployment and rising prices have repeatedly affected voter sentiment, and the lead-up to the 2024 national elections was no exception.
In this special episode of Newslaundry Interviews, host Manisha Pande speaks to political analyst Sanjay Kumar of Lokniti CSDS, delving into the factors that led to the BJP’s decline, particularly in Uttar Pradesh.
Asked about the BJP’s higher percentage of support among young voters, and joblessness as an issue, Kumar says that price rise and unemployment were concerns in 2019 too. “But there was still hope among people. And the hope was ‘we will get Ram Mandir’...people thought that we have got the Ram Mandir, Article 370 has been abolished. So what happened is these issues of unemployment and price rise were lying low on the ground. They started coming up. So they were more visible…People were not talking about Ram Mandir.”
Asked whether the BJP expected voters to be loyal for delivering on the Ram Mandir promise, Kumar says it was “a wrong judgment”. “Loyalty bonus you can’t get in every election.”
