Political Parties: Crash Course Government and Politics #40

Today, Craig is going to talk about political parties and their role in American politics. So, when most people think about political parties they associate them with the common ideologies of the voters and representatives within that party, but the goal of a party is NOT to influence policies. The role of political parties is much simpler: to win control of the government. So today, we’re going got talk about why we have political parties in the first place and then finish with the five functions they use in reaching that goal. It’s a lot to cover, so next week we’ll talk about what each political party stands for and how that has changed historically.

"But you're free to disagree, and if you do, go form your own party" Except that the first-past-the-post voting system that America currently has punishes third parties for existing (thanks to the spoiler effect), and makes it impossible for them to bring about any significant change.
@atrejunl
@atrejunl 8 лет назад
+Evdog Music its not really the FPTP system per se that makes it impossible for 3rd parties (every other country that uses FPTP has 3rd parties that have some representation although it is skewed towards the larger parties). Rather its the burdensome ballot requirements, gerrymandering, and the electoral college (which is an extreme form of FPTP) that is unique to the United States

Pennsylvania has closed primaries. In 2008, before the election started, I registered Republican so I could cast my vote for Ron Paul, but by the time election day came in PA, John McCain already had enough votes to win the nomination, so my vote was useless. However, Clinton and Obama were still virtually tied, and I definitely preferred Obama over Clinton, but because all registrations must be made a month in advance, I couldn't change my registration to Democrat to vote for Obama, and Hilary Clinton ended up winning in my district. Because of the closed primary system, I couldn't vote for the candidate I most wanted, and I also couldn't vote against the candidate I least wanted.
@tyronebiggums8660

That's so true
@chiblast100x
@chiblast100x 8 лет назад
+Shawn Ravenfire That's ok, I'm registered as neither of the big parties. I literally don't have anything to vote on on primary day unless there are other issues on the ballot (as there was here during the '08 primary). On top of that, come election day, due to the fact that I have strong problems with both major parties' platforms, the best vote I can ever cast is for the candidate I disagree with the least. Such are the problems many of us face due to the various ballot access restrictions both major parties have put in place in essentially every state in the union.
@MrDexter337
@MrDexter337 8 лет назад
+Shawn Ravenfire voting as a democrat in a primary is probably moot anyway since the party has super-delegates. Your vote gets obliterated 10,000 times over.

There another way to get into political office, without ever winning a single primary. The vice-presidential candidate doesn't have to win any primaries, but is simply picked by the presidential candidate. If this ends up being a poor selection, then all the other member of the party have no say in this.

Political parties are inevitable. There will always be large groups of people with similar political opinions who will work together to support their political beliefs.
@elisabethsandoval9634
@elisabethsandoval9634 7 лет назад
Just because someone has a different opinion than you doesn't make them stupid, uneducated, and it doesn't give you the right to assume you know who they are and what they've been through. We constantly argue until the arguing dissolves into name calling and threatening. We don't even try to see things from a different perspective most of the time. We're thinking selfishly. How hard is it to just try to be more open minded for once, especially when this election is going to have an impact on the whole world? Just once?

Exactly. Which is why we need to ban political parties and cure those who still believe that non sense.
@elisabethsandoval9634
@elisabethsandoval9634 7 лет назад
Not necessarily. Political parties can be helpful, but during this election season both sides turned incredibly nasty towards each other. Banning political parties won't stop people from taking sides. What we need desperately is to control ourselves, and to look for compromise. My biggest problem that was common between both major party candidates this election, was that both stood way too far to one side. Of course I had other problems and concerns about them as well. But I knew that no matter who won, half the country was going to be severely ticked off. So I voiced my call for compromise and an end to the nonsense. But of course, practically no one listened.

A party does not always represent the candidates and on top of that it makes people more lazy when it comes to researching the candidates background by standardizing what they "represent" Plus in some cases, it can actually be used as a deception. Doing a Progressive Tax on (Just) the “Greedy Part” of Wealth & Conservatively Spending (Just it) on Social Programs gets us a “Stable Society” (the “True Creator” of All Wealth!!) AND we do it with “Direct Democracy” where WE Directly Propose, Enact & Enforce “Merit Based Standardized” Laws & “Money” isn’t a factor!! - "Like" this so we all See & Do this!!
@balancedstereo

PS: Nobody’s taking away our “25 Rolls Royce’s” but WE MORALLY OWE (Just our “Greedy” 26th Rolls & up) BACK TO OUR STABLE SOCIETY (that “Owns & Allows” us to Create & Safely use our “25 Rolls”) TO KEEP IT STABLE!! We must Realize Nobody gets Rich without our “Fast Food Workers” who ironically Need “Food Stamps” for Stability!! No one is lazy & “Reaping Free Benefits off the Rich’s Money” because the GREEDY PART BELONGS to all of us!! Read Max Weber’s “Protestant Ethic & SPIRIT of Capitalism” where, early on, Wealth was only a Moral pursuit just to achieve our limited “State of Grace” & then we stopped so others could also achieve their monetary “Salvation” Watch “The Gods Must Be Crazy” where a “Coke bottle” falls from a plane into the midst of a primitive tribe & one guy grabs it & everyone fears him for grabbing ALL the “Money” & now being their “King”!! In "Direct Democracy" we vote directly for issues that we've tested for merit, etc before proposal, then we popularly enact them & then Voter Volunteers will easily enforce small & specific Laws that have all the "legal standards" for enforcement in them ... congress, senate, president, agencies, courts, etc have a role to play, but within it & in service to it ...

@georgemills-burrows7052

+Daniel Wallace theoretically you can still have a small government and keep down large corporations from accumulating a disproportionate amount of wealth if businesses are managed by co-operatives/unions. sort of an 'anarcho-syndicalism lite' I guess

MegaOopla Yeah, that's why I said he didn't say that. Bernie has some good ideas but he is too weak. Hilary is a much stronger person. I voted for Obama twice but this time around none of the democratic candidates are any good. The leading republican candidates are all better than Rick Perry and Romney was last time around.
