As Americans gear up for the election, Bill Adair warns of an "epidemic of lying" in U.S. politics -- particularly within the Republican Party. Adair joins the show to discuss his new book "Beyond the Lie." As founder of the fact-checking website PolitiFact, Adair is well placed to account for where disinformation comes from, how it spreads and the danger it poses to democracy.

I grew up in a Replubican household and Adair has it right. I noticed a big change with lying and hate in the early 90s with Gingrich and it's just gotten worse since then (obviously).

Singapore has a great law: :when a politician makes false claims he is first fined. If he continues to defame opponents or spread l ies he then goes to jail. Jail sentence determined by law

On a national level, it is not so much bad media coverage as social media. People don't realize all the lies told by Fox and Friends originate on social media.

Facts, social or natural, are open to interpretation, meaning alternative understandings are often seen as ‘false’. At the same time, the ‘truth’ can be decontextualized and deployed strategically to manipulate an audience. So, the issue is actually about intentions, and bad actors who operate in bad faith by distorting reasoned debate with crude self-interest, foreclosing shared agreements.
