This is a perfect example of why we use polycarbonate in our Evolution hurricane shutters. The stuff is as clear as glass and it is impervious to breakage from hurricane forces. Besides protecting your regular windows from hurricane damage, they will also work great to protect those expensive "hurricane proof windows" that the salesman told you would "survive" or "withstand" a hurricane but will actually break and need replacement. Check out other RU-vid videos about "impact window testing" and you'll see exactly what happens to "hurricane proof windows" when they get during a storm. Then you get stuck paying for impact windows TWICE. When you bought them, initially, you thought that they would be the last window that you will ever need to buy.
@@underwoodblog yes it does companies will apply chemicals to keep that from happening but it's obviously costs more to buy there really is not a downside to polycarbonate
this is not an over statement, lexan as about as bulletproof as plastic can get. i shot 3mm marcolon with a 50lbs longbow with pointy bullet tips, and it barely dented the backside, but broke an arrow.

I agree that lexan its very resistant, but there are other kinds of "plastic" that are much more bullet resistant such as spectra
I spent ten minutes beating a small sheet of 1/16" lexan with a friend yesterday and we never got through it, steel pipes, sledge hammers, bb guns, pickaxe barely got through but we couldnt get the pickaxe out, and it was hit in an area where it was scored for cutting earlier.
I would not recommend this against firearms or even against smaller calibres. A .22 round can penetrate layers of polycarbonate fired by a spring-powered rifle. Please exercise caution.

when i was little my dad put this Lexan up over every window in our home 2 reasons...HEat in the winter and its damn near indestructable ,i spent hours shooting at one sheet same spot with .22 and wouldnt budge it
This looks like a solution to securing door side lights . It could be put on the inside of the window,leaving the outside glass in place, and secured with flat metal held in place by sex bolts. A hammer or crowbar could break the glass but they couldn't break the plastic. Neither could they quickly smash it in or pry it out. From the outside it wouldn't look too bad, especially if the glass is opaque. On the inside you would see the metal straps. If they were painted to match the surrounding trim it might look ok. This might not hold up to heat build up if much sunlight hits it.
I was looking for something to make a thin but strong subwoofer baffle for behind my car rear seats. I used some half inch MDF but it ended up being too much with the subwoofer to put the seats back down. I'm thinking 1/8 Lexan might do the trick.
PC is rather flexible, compared to acrylic or glass. that's what makes it unbreakable, but any bigger tank would propably bulge, unless you went crazy with the thickness.
@@MrCatseyes01 I was being a dumbass at the time I wrote that comment... I'd completely forgotten cut-off saws, angle grinders, and hydraulic rams existed. Also, yeah I'm pretty sure a cutting torch would be able to melt through it. Would be interesting to see a torture test video to see what'd make it through.
@@MrCatseyes01 You actually don't want Oxy Acetylene for breaching the lexan. You want the highest BTUs per unit of gas possible so natural gas would be about your best bet. Oxy Acetylene burns the hottest out of all the gases, but it actually has the lowest heat output, you want a high heat output to melt the lexan. This is why MAPP gas cuts steel way faster that acetylene, the MAPP gas has a much higher heat output. But in hindsight you can always just use an oxygen lance and cut straight through the concrete wall the lexan is mounted in.
My front door has a 13mm thick lexan core inside it, full width and length that I sandwiched in between the wood. I'd love to see someone try to kick it in. Heavy as hell though.
@@SamCyanide The deadbolt is 3 feet long, made out of 17mm diameter steel bar stock, and it drops down into the concrete floor in front of the door, to pin the door from opening. Its very solid.
The first blow on the anti-bandit glass was actually the second below if you freeze the frame you’ll see that they did an overlay and hit it once then splice the video and hit it the second time to break through in total three hits to fully break through the anti-bandit glass. If you’re going to make a product and put someone else’s product down at least do it honestly. Or simply say on the third blow The window was breached. If you can’t trust the companies review of their own product how can you trust the product itself

I'm thinking of buying some 150 x 150 cm extruded acrylic to rest on top of 4 corner poles but don't want it to bend in the middle if it's too thin and when it snows (each pole will be 15 cm from the edge). What is the minimum thickness do you think I should use? Because every mm costs money I don't more thickness than is needed.
Hi xbeanx3000. In My opinion, the Rule is => Thickness x 100 = Span ( in mm). This will eliminate Sagging. I have no experience in Acrylic. But I think this formula apply to Solid Lexan Sheet. 1.5 meter ( 150cm) is too wide. Try Using Lexna Thermoclear ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PL8arbaVQvA.html) . They are more Stiff

So here's the thing. Old video...yes, but it still showed up as relevant for a search so I am commenting, get over it. Physics says that given a surface (the Lexan pane) and a large surface area impact tool (the axe and sledge) are good "common" tools. But what if you have an uncommon thief? Maybe they are using a spiked headed tool, I guarantee that will break thru...Why? Because the smaller the surface are of an impact tool the better change of penetration. When you add weight, velocity AND a small surface are to the mix, few clear surface shields will survive impact.
A Lexan pane has a lot of elasticity when hit hard. The flex distributes a lot of the impact energy throughout the whole pane, no matter the shape of the striking implement. You would need a high velocity projectile such as a bullet in order to penetrate it. In that case, the inertia of the Lexan means it doesn't have any time to flex and absorb energy. The bullet just ploughs through as if through butter.
