The terms and details of aircraft fabric covering are often misused and not fully understood. As an example - the terms Ceconite, Dacron, Superflite, and polyester are often used in confusing ways. As aircraft builders, we should feel comfortable about each of these items. This video reviews all of these terms.

I believe the scraps of oratex can be used for patching holes from rocks sticks etc, so they have value especially for field repairs of bush planes

Way to go Jon!...Oratex also doesn’t have many color choices and once decided it’s for life of the covering. Off cuts with Dacron can be used for tapes or even peel ply pull for wing tips or molded winglets of epoxy substrates. I still want video series of afforda-plane as soon as u done

Great presentation Jon.. thank you.. looks like you are using the Stewarts. I have always only used Polyfiber and have been really satisfied, but getting the Haz chemicals shipped to our part of the world (South Africa) has become prohibitively expensive. Am going to give the Stewarts water based system a try on the next project.

I've not used Stuarts but I will use it or Oratex on my current build. The owner of Stuarts is a stand up guy. He is a CFI too, signed me off to take my check ride.

A mechanic I respect named Bob Woods always used Stits. Now his shop uses Air-Tech Coatings. He says the main advantage is that it takes less work than Polyfiber or Stewarts. Also it can be repaired almost invisibly.

I'd love to see you do an addendum to this with the guys using latex paints. Lots of folks on a budget and see if it really saves money.

I would go for stewarts since its water base also you can use the scrap pieces as well

Great explanation. I am having to re-cover a wing on my Rans S7. The plane was originally covered in Polyfiber, I am wanting to use the Stewerts system on the one wing. Is there any issues with doing this?

The presenter he interviewed(?) in the previous video mentions this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fTpGVa-a9_Y.html Or try tech@stewartsystems.aero and just ask the company directly, Andy Humphery (new owner of Stewarts System) is an honest dude, he won't sell you something that you can't use.

Uhhh I'd go oratex. As a long time RC modeler I,ve done silk dope, coverite with dope and iron on . The finishing is very finniky!! Things at eavh step can go wrong EASILY!!!! Oratex can be masked and painted if you want to go fancy but quick and easy!!!

Have you heard of Oratek? How that compares to these?

Hello Jon. Great video, but.. you missed discussion the Superflite System 7. I'm leaning towards this for my Highlander. Less coats of paint as the UV protection is inside the primer and top coat. Also.. Oratex is super expensive. I have quotes from Superflite for everything but the thinners and it's less than $4K complete. The like to like in Oratex just came back to me at $11.7K! I like the concept of Oratex, but the price difference is crazy huge!

You are correct! My bad. I did miss a very popular system from Superflite. They not only provide fabric but their own system for installation and paint. Thanks for noting this omission.

If u pull Dacron off of epoxied substrates...u don’t have to sand prep for paint or for further adhesion.😎

So, with these systems is stitching still done? And could you make a video about stitching?
@commentatron
@commentatron 2 года назад
You've probably Googled it already, Charles, but searching on _stewart systems rib stitching_ produces a lot of good video. I'm using the Superflite knot on my UL build, can't post links here, but just add this to the end of the RU-vid URL: 1au7zB8aNtQ Also, Jon has posted some good interview stuff with Stewart System's Marty Feehan over the years (an excerpt recently, too).

I believe if you check the MSDS document on Stewart Systems they advise the need for outside fresh air breathing equipment when applying their topcoat.

Just be careful of the "system" you use as some of them don't hold up well to ethanol FREE Autogas. "I'll never use autofuel," you say, maybe not but all it takes it one accident & there goes the paint job or glue adhesion. Also many systems must have epoxy primers as the glues will lift over traditional varnish or different non epoxy paints. Look up the problems with this issue before making your choice. There are many sad & angry folks that found out the hard way. I know a couple of them, so research and read throughly.
