Eric, Great video. Very thorough. We have been selling and installing polycarbonate sheets since 1993. I only have one point that I would like to add. You mention at the end that the material has a ten year warranty. Most of the ten year warranty material states that the light transmission will not vary more than 6% in 10 years. We have seen those particular materials last 15 plus years. There are now sheets available that have a 20 year warranty that the light transmission will not vary more than 4% in 20 years. It has 100% material reimbursement if there is a claim in the first 15 years. There is a prorated material replacement in years 16 - 20. It is a Lexan material and yes, it is about 15% more expensive than the 10 year warranted sheets. Also, Polygal has a product Polymatte that they offer a 15 year warranty on. It has 100% light diffusion. We have found that polycarbonate has improved quite a bit through the years that we have used it. It is an excellent product and gives an excellent finished project. Again, thanks for the great video. Tammy

I was considering this material. Glad to see you made a thorough review many years ago. Thanks Eric!

I know this video is old but I've only just come across the channel and been slowly making my way through the videos. There is another con to using polycarbonate it doesn't react well with solvents like acetone it crazes the surface clouds it and can even make it shatter in extreme cases so cleaning it and how it's done needs to be taken into account with regards the upkeep.

Who manufacturers the polycarbonate aerogel panels you spoke of? I did barn doors for my carport in 8mm opal twin-wall and I'm now in the process of fabbing awnings out of the same material using TIG welded one- inch aluminum frames. I love the quality of the light and the strength of panels. We've had multiple storms with 60 mph winds here in California and the awnings came like champs. Excellent information. Thanks!

This is great, both the video and the material! I'm redisigning the interior of my truck (dashboard, door panels, headliner, etc), and these have a cyberpunk look! I also want to run led strips behing the panels. Gonna be sick! :3

Does it turns yellowish when expose to the sun through the time? Does it become brittle with time?

After 20 years exposed to sunlight this falls apart. I used this on my roof.

I love your video on polycarbonate. I have a contractor and I am ready to order the product. The questions I have are with the installation. Here are my questions: 1. Solid tape on edge next to ledger board and vented tape on gutter edge. Both seem important to me. Can vented tape be used on both sides? 2. Should a rafter gasket be placed on top of rafter? Is an aluminum base as effective? 3. Is it best to use a capping profile with gaskets to avoid water seeping down to the rafter? Or is an aluminum cap when screed down equally as effective ? 4. Should an F profile be added to the gable end and secured to the outside of the rafter? 5. Should a cap be used over the u-profile at gutter edge and over the capping profile to avoid water seeping into/under the sheets? 6. Is there a distributor you would recommend I contact?

Home Depot carries a comparable product and may be able to help more.

Thanks for watching... Without knowing the specific circumstances or precise materials you're considering for your project it would be difficult to answer your questions. If you have a product in mind, you might start by consulting the manufacturer's website and contacting their local representative.

I would love to use this I'm my fence. I live on a corner, and would love to see the silhouettes of people when they walk by. I guess I need the UV resistant variety? Do the panels that they build greenhouses out of yellow too? I guess I haven't noticed.
@30by40
@30by40 8 лет назад
Typically, only one side of the material is UV resistant so a fence might be tough to pull off. You might check with the manuf. to verify.

What do you think of polycarbonate boards with wood batons as an interior wall finishing? I’ve only seen it in really cheap basement Reno’s and previously unfinished places that don’t need to add shear strength to the building. It seems like (as a decorator myself) that there’s a possibility or two for feature walls but I’d like you’re take.

What extrusion profile would be appropriate on the horizon joint of a sloping roof. Ideally, we would want the panel to run continuous from ridge to eave but this is not always possible. My first thought would be butting the "U" profile of each panel together with a sealant along the seam (Titebond 100% Silicone Sealant Franklin International, Inc,). I am not an advocate for using a sealant as the prime detail to resist water infiltration, but sometimes the simplest detail is the best

Anyone used twinwall polycarbonate to build a greenhouse/outdoor shelter? From researching online polycarbonate is naturally uv resistent. News to me i that plants only require a little amount of uv to grow and the panels will be ok as the plants should get enough from reflections as my structure wouldnt be completely blocking to sunlight. Any thoughts?
