One tip I use for corners is cutting 45 degree angles, or the picture frame angle as I like to call it. It makes it so I can press the edges together to form a tight edge and seal, and no worries about altering the shape! Great way to use up your scraps!! Love listening to you!!! Looking forward to the next video!

love it! ❤ little tip for the uneven side - when you bake the box again the clay will become flexible again when warm so you could use some supports right out of the oven to straighten that side back up!! worked for me!! then again handmades not supposed to be perfect LOL but I'm affectionate so that's hard for me 😘

Thanks for the tip! You are right, Lisa! I could have done that. I thought of it AFTER I put it together. Now that I've baked it, the wonky side is attached to the bottom so I'm OK with it. If I were going to sell the finished box, I would surely have made sure the sides were straighter. I'm hoping when I put the outside layer on it won't be so obvious. Thanks for your comment!

Gayle, you are such a positive lady, I've tried or am trying to adopt "it's ok" or "that's ok" which you say and don't get in a flap. It's so calming. I'm looking forward to the next video to see how you cover your box. A little while ago I asked you if I could bake some tiles I'd made a few weeks previously. In your last question and answers video you said to try but weren't sure although they should be ok. I baked a few things at the same time, everything bar the tiles turned out ok. They're very brittle but as a newbie it could be I didn't condition the clay properly and also they're made with Sculpey III as I didn't know to use a stronger clay. It's ok 😊, it's a good lesson for me not to leave anything too long before i bake it and I'll use stronger clay. Your finger still looks sore, hope making a video for us didn't put you back. Blessings,

Thanks, Val! I'm sorry your tiles didn't turn out well. Sculpey III is brittle when baked - even if baked when freshly made and conditioned properly. I would try Premo for tiles or anything else that could break. The cheapest place I've found it is at sunnydaycrafts.com/. They ship quickly and their clay is always fresh. Hope this helps.

Also - when I first started working with clay, I was only happy if everything I made was perfect. I would really stress over getting it just right. Now, I clay because it's something I love and enjoy so I've given up the idea of perfection. It really helps.

Hi Gayle. Happy new year. I asked you about making a box last month. Thank you so much for doing this video! I love your videos you're an amazing teacher and a lovely, wonderful person! Im looking forward to part 2 and your future videos. I hope your finger heals soon, it must be very sore. And I hope your doggy is OK....you said in your last video that he had to go to the vets. xxxx

Thanks! Everything is fine now. My finger is healed but is still a little sore at times. My dog was not sick but he has an autoimmune disease for which he must take meds. One of them may affect his kidneys so he needs blood work every 6 months before his meds can be refilled. Thanks for your concern!

I love to create a scene with mud then color with either mica powder, ink, or oil paint.

Thank you soooo much for sharing this. I have been wanting to try making some boxes from clay and now I have your video for instruction and inspiration. I also just saw that we are both in Virginia. I live just outside of Roanoke. Also... I don't see a link for the doctor who makes the hearts that you mentioned.

I apologize. Sometimes I mention that I will add links to a video and by the time I get the video finished, edited and uploaded to RU-vid, it gets lost! But you know what they say about good intentions! Here is a link to his Facebook page. It has the best information on him and if you scroll through his posts, you will see his posts on his hearts. You mentioned being an EMT in younger years.... You didn't happen to teach a course in Houghton Lake, Michigan, in or about 93-94, did you? I Remember, the course instructor was a gentle voiced lady named Gayle... Could be coincidence, but, certainly caught my attention! I enjoy your videos, and clay creations Anyhow!!! Happy New Year!

No that wasn't me. I never taught classes and I've never been in Michigan. What a coincidence! Thanks for watching - and paying attention!

Hi. I was just wondering if I could bake the sides before glueing them together? xxx
@Mimismarketva
@Mimismarketva 7 лет назад
You could bake the pieces and then put them together with liquid clay or Bake & Bond and then bake again. Remember, it is your work so you can do it any way you want. I just prefer putting raw clay to raw clay.

i was thinking the same thing, you would have significantly less bowing if you bake everything flat and the glue, you just have to be careful of the shine

Looking forward to part two. I have to ask how you reconditioned that rock hard clay. I just threw out a big bunch of clay out. I tried to run it thru the pasta machine for about an hour and it kept crumbling. I mixed some clay softener in it and let it set in a baggie. It was to much softener, I think, it was a gooie stickey mess. I finally threw it away. How did you get it to roll out?

Polymer clay starts to cure at 90 degrees. If your clay has been exposed to temps that warm (or if the retailer where you bought it stored it in a warm warehouse) it is difficult to get it workable. But if it's only because it is old and stiff, I normally warm it up by putting it in my bra for an hour or so! Once it warms up you can roll it with your roller to get it thin enough to go through your pasta machine. Then start rolling. It takes some time but I've done this with old Kato which is stiffer than most clays.
